Hi! Write in the comments how often you change your engine oil, what kind of oil you use and what country you live in. I think it will be interesting for everyone to read it;) P.S. I don't know English very well, so please write comments on translation and/or voice acting. This will help make the video better! Thanks) In our online video course "Car Anatomy" there are more informational videos in 3D animation. Details on our website: carinfo3d.com

The car now has 207.000 km and doesn't consume oil (around half way at the dip stick when it needs to be changed, so it consumes max. 0.5 l over 25.000 km or so). Never had an oil related problem in all family with sticking to the engineers maintenance plan also with long drain intervals...

The complexity of an ICE is really amazing. It's one thing to design it and put it on paper, but to then manufacture a working, reliable, durable engine is amazing to me and I worked for a diesel engine manufacturer for 31 years. The casting of a cylinder block and cylinder head is complex as the cooling jacket needs to be cast in then oil galleys need to be machined, etc. Pumps, coolers, filters located and installed so that all passages connect and don't leak. Not a small task. I got to work as a laborer in an engine foundry for five summers and saw how castings were formed, it is difficult to describe as you see the internal passages as hard sand forms then the outside formed around them and then the molten metal poured in and what comes out after cooling is a cylinder head or a block.
Lawyer here. The professionals I respect the most are the engineers. These people are actual miracle doers. Unbelievable. BTW, awesome video. Keep it up.

How often should I do an oil change?
@Vuldin7 Жыл бұрын
Look at your vehicle's manual.. search for it online if you dont have it... but generally 5-10k miles you'll change the oil AND oil filter. It's difficult to determine when an oil change is actually needed and color wont help. So routine changes is the best way to ensure oil has not gone bad.

Every 5000 km to 7000 km if you use full synthetic oil. Don't change it at 10.000 km.

@@MedicalStudentChannel They are wrong. Don't trust them. They also say transmission fluid is for life which is not true . Use the recommend oil viscosity and use 100% synthetic oil and change it at 5000 km or 7000 km max. Every mechanic recommend this.

Remember, oil seals are an afterthought in all German cars. Some brands (Audi, mostly) also like to consume oil, like a 2 stroke. So remember to top that oil off once in a while.

VAG engines went for fuel economy and more power by using loose piston rings. End result is higher engine oil consumption as it's burnt in the cylinder. Not a problem when engine oil is cheaper than fuel ;-)

Please explain engine timing… what do mechanics mean when they say the timing of the engine is bad?
@PandaorKevin Жыл бұрын
Engine timing is for the intake and exhaust valves for the cylinders in your engine. This is driven by a timing belt or timing chain connected to the camshaft that has lobes that push against the exhaust and intake valves for each cylinder at the correct time. Depending on how far off the engine timing is, the engine could run poorly, incorrect air fuel mixture, bad compression, etc, or it may not start at all. If the timing is severely off, the valves that let air in and exhaust out could get bent (combustion happening when valves are open or piston hitting a valve), and then they would need to be replaced. There's also ignition timing, which is the timing for electricity to the spark plugs. In modern engines this is determined by sensors for the crankshaft position and camshaft position. Older cars may have a distributor to "distribute" spark to each cylinder, and the distributor is mechanically driven by a connection to the camshaft

How does the oil not burn up in the combustion chamber when it lubricates the pistons?
@V0ID_beats Жыл бұрын
There are rings on the pistons responsible for scraping the oil down from the cylinder walls, if those malfunction the car will burn oil

i have a BMW F22 218d (2015) and i'm changing my engine-oil every 2years or 30.000km. since im interested in this engineering-stuff the last couple months i will now lower the mileage and change it every 15.000km ( driving 20.000km per year) the oil is 5W-30. maybe i will test 5W-40 in the future and watch out if there is a difference.
@MiGujack3 Жыл бұрын
Oil changes after 30k? I'm surprised your engine didn't blow up yet. Never *EVER* trust official BMW intervals, always half the number they give you. They say, 15k miles. So do it every 7500 mi (12000 km). I don't drive that much so I simply change my oil every year.
