Carl Lewis, as one of only four Olympic athletes to have won nine Olympic gold medals, is widely recognised as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Lewis emulated his boyhood idol Jesse Owens by winning gold in the 100m, the 200m, the long jump and the 4x100m relay. A superstar was born.

The one and only Carl Lewis, my childhood favorite. What a baton exchange it was, beautiful to watch. Look at the mess now @ Tokyo. Total disgrace, no wonder king Carl got wild watching them bungle... The whole quartet was superb at la....may the Lord bless him. He brought joy to so many, just watching him Sprint is a delight.

By far the best looking technical form of any sprinter or long jumper in history. It's nearly perfect! One of the reasons why I feel Carl Lewis held longevity for so long in both events working on technique combined with God given talent. Not to mention broke the 100m world record in 1991, holds more gold medals then any other track n field athlete in Olympic history (mind you he would have won the gold in 1980 Long Jump if USA did not boycott those Olympics) and unarguably the greatest long jumper in history regardless if he has the world record. Just look at his Long Jump history and you will see no one comes close to him at all. His world class accolades started while he was just in high school unlike these other burst on the scene athletes today. He has been dubbed for performance enhancing drugs?? Yeah, for taking a cold supplement sudaphed (an over the counter drug listed as not ok then ok then not ok by IOC) and in my opinion equivalent to caffeine/Red Bull/5 Hour Energy..Not even close to using illegal steroids or some other growth hormone or some drug that makes you the incredible Hulk like all these other cheats have used to win their medals!! I just wonder if he had actually used steroids. He probably would have broke world records in 100m, 200m and Long Jump that still would stand today!

Everyone wanted to see Carl run. There was a lot of excitement and a lot of build up and expectation, like Phelps this year. You could not find tickets for the track and field events. We were lucky and were given tickets by family friends from Michigan who want us to take their daughter since they couldn't make it. The LA coliseum was packed of course and the crowd was roaring when he ran. You couldn't hear yourself talk. Seemed like much simpler times then, hell traffic wasn't even that bad in LA and parking was a breeze. Very organized and secure. Outside the coliseum had a festive feel, almost like a State Fair. I was 24. Those days were awesome.
