I nearly shed some manly tears when I heard Sagan's quote about a marker being placed on Mars. "Whatever the reason you're on Mars, I'm glad you're there, and I wish I was with you."

Actually, no. There are objects orbiting the Sun to 1/4 of the the distance to the nearest star (Proxima Centauri, 4.24 ly), they are part of the Oort cloud, and still part of the solar system. Voyager 1 is at 126 A.U., the Oort cloud extends for 50k A.U.

Benjamin Wiens Ah, yes. I see the misunderstanding now. They are using interstellar space to describe a medium belonging strictly to the heliosphere class, a *stellar wind* bubble. However, I think that it's a rather bad naming _Interstellar Space_, mainly because the larger objects that exist in that region are gravitationally tied to the Sun.

If only Sagan could've lived to witness Voyager breaking into interstellar space... I'm sure he would have loved it and would've got something inspiring to say. They don't make people like these anymore. These were the people growing up watching Sputnik above the sky and listening to Kennedy's historic Moon speech. The Space Race was one of those few moments that brought up the best in mankind. Too bad we didn't keep the pace.

I see a lot of people here talking about Neil Degrasse Tyson, and the Cosmos show which will air on March 9, this year. Personally, I think Neil has the intellectual capacity and scientific skepticism needed to talk about these exciting subjects, but I think he lacks the humility that Carl Sagan had. I've only seen a few conferences and interviews with Neil, but it seems that he likes to spend a lot of time ridiculing people who believe things that can easily be disproven by science. Even though I think it's fine that he's a truth seeker, I still prefer Carl Sagan's way of inspiring the ignorant, rather than ridiculing them, because it is much more constructive and nice to listen to. It is also one of the things that I respect most about Carl Sagan, so I'm sad to see that left out. I hope Neil's version will surprise me and prove me wrong though.

One thing to say, Ann Druyan would sooner burn down the production house of the new Cosmos than release something that will tarnish the original Cosmos. Rest assured, IT WILL BE AWESOME!!!
@Muskar2

Hi Putan Mircea and thanks for your comment. I just looked Ann up and she seems like a great character. She also seems like a great people's person but I'm not sure if I'm confident that she will spot Neil's ridiculing or be able to inspire him to change it. Because his favorite kind of humor seems to be to ridicule ideas. Particularly mocking the idea that Pluto should still be a planet. At least that's what I've seen. I don't doubt that they're probably going to produce a nice factual show with some great perspectives but I just don't like the approach of tearing down "thought personalities", no matter how illogical, ignorant or evidence-refusing they may be. It brings a slight sense of intolerance and superiority. And however slight it may be, I think it teaches the opposite lesson of the science of astronomy: That we are smaller than our minds can really grasp. I think it's an ultimate lesson of humility. I'm probably putting too much thought into it - and I know I don't have an influence either way - but I just hope it won't inspire kids to be intolerant to illiterates or other ignorant people.

Rob Bowes Yeah I think it's alright. In the second episode he implicitly targets creationists, using the argument "scientific fact" as if that means something to people who don't understand _HOW_ we know these things. But I guess I understand the frustration, since I've heard a lot of people seriously believe in creationism in the US and he's been in a lot of debates about it, as far as I understand. I would have preferred showing more examples of how we came to know the evolutionary theory - so he focused on inspiring people rather than trying to force ideas upon them, which it may seem from a non-scientific background. And it would also have been nice if he debunked the Social Darwinist term "survival of the fittest" because I think that belief is far more dangerous to the world than believing in superstition. But the other episodes have been great for me. I've only seen 4 so far though.
@Muskar2
@Muskar2 10 жыл бұрын
I just watched the fifth episode. That was my favorite yet. Although it had some technical parts that didn't give enough room to ponder over the information - like the explanation of the different atoms giving off different spectra of light. But it was really good. I wish evolution was covered in a similar fashion but he did leave a few cliffhangers there so he might touch up on all of that in later episodes. It definitely has me excited.

Its eccentric orbit around the sun is not among the reasons the International Astronomical Union gave for downgrading Pluto's status to "dwarf planet" in 2006. Not only is Pluto's orbit elliptical, which puts it at odds with the circular orbits of the great eight, but its orbital plane is also very different. The effect of Pluto's orbit takes it inside of Neptune's at its perihelion, which is roughly 2.7 billion miles. It takes 20 years for the two orbits to cross again.

"The Dutch knew that the unrestrained persuit of profit posed a serious threat to the soul of the nation." Pearls of wisdom Sagan caught immediately and was quick to share. It is true. The persuit of profit must be encouraged. But wealth must be used for more than yatchs, art and mansions. When everybody in a country shares in its wealth then it multiplies. True economical magic and not like the imaginary "trickle down" effect.

I weep to think that this wonderful series marks the high-water mark of civilisation to date. Now, in 2024 we are decending into a new, horrific dark age of bigotry, hatred and anti-science. How much progress will be lost before we, as a species, rediscover the joy of exploration, the wonder of learning, the beauty in both the extremely small and the implausibly large and the futility of the aforementioned bigotry, prejudice and hate?

@snaileri According to vangelismovements(dot)com/cosmosseries.htm Vangelis made music specially for the Cosmos special edition of 1986, most of which hasn't been released on albums. As this track is from the remake of the full series in year 2000, I guess that this can belong to that category ("Some of the new music also appears in the 2000 remastered VHS and DVD release"). (A short passage in Heaven and Hell at 05:53-06:05 reminds somewhat of your track.)

I am proud of my little country. It has fought off much bigger countries, such as France and Spain, and created a safe haven for intellectuals. While the rest of Europe was controled by some religious freaks, my country played a big role in the Enlightenment. Religion had its fun, kept us back for centuries and victimized lots of people. The Netherlands helped breaking the chains from this oppression. It's also a great honor to have received Carl Sagan here in my very own hometown (Amsterdam).

They should have put a miniature record player on board too-I can't imagine any intelligent life form working out what the disc was for-you just have to look at us humans trying to get to grips with modern technological devices here on Earth to understand that.There can be no way of determining what kinds of intelligences may possibly be out in space nor what the likelihood of this disc being found by aliens with arms and hands and ears to listen so this was a silly idea really but a beautiful one which, suspect was the point really.

I feel like that stereotype in movies of high school students watching a super boring documentary and falling asleep in class probably started from these documentaries and ones similar. And while I in no way think he has the most invigorating voice in the world, I think If more students actually listened to what was being said, rather then the tone of voice, they'd find that these documentaries are full of discovery, amazing knowledge, emotion, passion and are in truth, very fascinating.

Are you actually a physicist, dude? Because I'm not sure what you mean when you say "we are all traveling through space-time at the light-speed." Light moves at light speed... that's why it's called light speed! Besides space, which can expand faster than light, and maybe neutrinos, I'm not aware of anything else being able to go that fast. But by all means, correct me if I'm wrong!
