It's not an exaggeration to say that Haikyuu easily has the best training arcs in all of anime. Their training arcs last for sometime, show actual growth in characters and never ever feel dragged out. The writer, Haruuichi Furudate is a pure genius. The training which the characters undergo pays off in such extraordinary ways in the coming arcs that they make you question reality. Go ahead and witness this masterful arc which is probably the 2nd best training arc in all of anime ( 1st is also from Haikyuu and it will be adapted in the movies...no spoilers tho )

You're definitely not alone in wanting to see the characters more outside of the court. In fact, even the author talked about how they have to cut out a lot of such scenes since they can only fit so much in a chapter, and while they really wanted to try and write a chapter or two with the characters just hanging out, they also weren't brave enough, scared that it'd bore the readers :c As if!!!
@laiofurious643310 ай бұрын
Yeah... japanese readers can be really tough sometimes, so I can see the fear about boring them, but with Haikyuu, I really doubt nobody would NOT like seeing the characters hanging around, when they're precisely the focus of the story. I could totally read and watch a Haikyuu spin-off that is completely a slice of life story about them when they're not playing volleyball 😂😂

U missed a parallel between the shiratorizawa coach and Japan coach, Shiratorizawa coach like big and tall players but during intro of Japan's coach he said that Japans volleyball will fall in front of big and tall, that idea is outdated he said. This parallel will develop further into the series when the Japan coach watches hinata play
@milkntomatoes941810 ай бұрын
It's crazy because this is kind of the actual Japanese national team's thing. They fight mostly Europeans and Middle Easterns in international competitions, so everyone's just taller and bigger than them. Their tallest members are just average height for other teams, and even their muscle mass and arm spans are different. But Japan makes up for the obvious physical disadvantage with strategy, unique plays, adaptability, great defense, and I dare say some of the craziest tossing you'll ever see in vb history. Sekita, my favorite vb player, is a beast of a setter with a height like Suga's (he's been 5"9 since his high school vb days while his opponents are like half a foot taller on a bad day) but his skill, focus and accuracy are like Kageyama's

The anime’s production team definitely deserves kudos for how amazingly well they’ve brought the manga to life, but I really think the author (Haruichi Furudate) deserves props for the amazing story he’s written/drawn in the manga. It’s ultimately a pretty small thing, I just notice it often when you give props to the “producers” for character writing.
@milkntomatoes941810 ай бұрын
Yeah, ppl keep forgetting that most anime (like 98% of them prbly) are made from manga, so it's the mangaka and their editors who originally wrote/drew the story and made all the wonderful characters we come to know and love. In fact, it's often the case esp. for well-written series that whenever an anime-only fan has a complaint about a scene or detail etc, it turns out to be an anime-only addition and was never in the manga in the first place. But a lot of the reactors I've watched only ever praise "the writers/producers of the show" and forget who really first brought the story and characters to life

Yeah, gotta say, Coach Washijo takes MVP for me. He's the one who actually advanced the plot in this episode by allowing Hinata to stay, and he's shown a (admittedly very cagey) willingness to be proven wrong in his belief that height is everything. He wasn't 'nice' about how he addressed Hinata, but he wasn't overly mean. He was just matter-of-fact (and MVP often isn't decided by who was 'nicest' - that would be sportmanship)
@sirKen_NU10 ай бұрын
You know what would be nice? Maybe Carlie and Ange can watch actual matches of the Japanese Men's Volleyball Team while we wait for the movie to come out once they finish season 4. I think Nishinoya not being picked for National Camp wasn't exactly because of his behaviour off court 😅 He played amazingly against Shiratorizawa, but still struggled with recieves at first, moved mostly (like always) on instinct. He's short, he plays exclusively as a libero, his stats are not overall amazing - I'm sure there just was a better libero out there that got picked. And I love how supportive he is of his teammates, together with Tanaka 🧡🖤

14:34 I'm glad you guys recognized that Hinata needs to be punished and that being a ball boy is not that bad for him. I know he's our boy but if you think of it what he did wasn't right since he's getting something that he wasn't given in the first place and people tend to say that the coach should've given him a chance. However, I also think that this is the very reason why I absolute love this season cause we see Hinata's character even more. Hinata has been deprived of opportunities since he was in middle school but Hinata will always find his way and make his own opportunity.

I support all of Hinata’s decisions and selfishness because no one will fight harder for you than yourself (a lesson that he’s taught me). He made an opportunity for himself where no one else would (without hurting or taking someone else’s spot) so at the end of the day the embarrassment is worth it from the perspective of a SERIOUS competitor. And Hinata IS a serious competitor no matter how much everyone thinks he’s just yapping (except Kageyama) and doesn’t believe in him. His ultimate character arc is probably the best in the sports genre and definitely my favorite in terms of shonen MCs.

I think two other candidates for MVP this episode should be Anarbara-Sensei (Johzenji's coach) for taking the initiative to set up the Miyagi Prefecture training camp, and Takeda-Sensei for his terrifying seriousness when scolding Hinata. Anabara said that he had recommended Hinata, and the subtext is that Washijo vetoed him in that selection process. Anabara is trying to do something to bring young promising players together to improve, and he reminds me of Ukai-kun, in his youthfulness. Like Ukai-kun, he is the new generation of coaching talent in Miyagi Prefecture. Him also suppressing laughter when Hinata announces himself as a ball boy at the end is really funny, and shows us that he is maybe also a little green as an authority figure. Takeda is just an absolute gem, super kind and compassionate, always smiling or being impressed and proud of his boys, so us getting to see his stern side is really powerful. When Ukai gets Hinata on the phone we see Hinata holding the phone at arms length getting yelled at, then Takeda taps Ukai's arm and Ukai gets legitimately spooked seeing Takeda's face. Takeda doesn't need to raise his voice, he speaks calmly and sternly and you can see how much of an impact it has on Hinata, and how contrite he feels upon being scolded. Even Anabara comments internally about how Takeda seems really nice but maybe he's actually scary. We know he's not scary in the same way that Washijo is (referred to as the Demon Coach in S3 by Ukai), but it hits way harder when someone who is normally reserved and calm and kind actually gets serious and pissed off. Outside of the players, Takeda and Yachi are my two favourite characters, so I'm always rooting for one of them to get MVP. I felt like this was a really powerful scene for Takeda, we see how much Hinata cares about Takeda's opinion, but we also see that even when he is furious, Takeda remains calm and open to listen to Hinata's motivation for his actions. I'm just going off about Takeda now, but I also really love how just in 2 episodes (S3E10-S4E1 if we ignore the OVA's) we see a really wide range of emotion and behaviour from Takeda. He's so happy when they qualify for Nationals, he can hardly believe it, and he's crying and being very open and emotionally vulnerable. We go from 'proud emotional parent' Takeda to 'icy calm teacher' Takeda in the span of one episode. If we even call back to the end of Season 2 (which is just 1 day before the end of S3 in the show) Ukai is praising him after the victory over Aoba Johsai, saying that all the improvement the team has made is really due to Takeda's determination in reconnecting with Nekoma, organizing practice matches, and generally pouring all his effort into this team. Takeda visibly gets emotional about this praise, but stops himself and tells Ukai, "You can praise me if we win tomorrow" (paraphrasing). It's powerful to see a character who starts the show knowing nothing about the sport become so emotionally invested in the team, and yet still has the appropriate mindset of being an authority figure and a great role model for the students.

For those unaware, season four of Haikyuu had a new series director. The same studio, Production IG, animated it, but it looks different due to the director. Also, this season dropped during the beginning of Covid-19, so there was some outsourcing done to other studios to meet deadlines. While the story is just as good as ever, the quality of animation and the overall production quality suffered. It's definitely noticeable all throughout, especially in a future episode in the back half of the season that I won't spoil.

As to why Kageyama got the pick, it's easy to make a blocker than it is a setter; if you suck as a setter then there's a mountain of work to improve and unlikely if impossible you'd be able to make the required changes in a short period of time. Think how much better Hinata and even Tsuki became as blockers with just a few training sessions and tips. A genius setter can take an average team and make it a winning team (Seijou), the same can't be said for pretty much any other role.

My head canon as to why Hinata impulsively joined the Miyagi training camp: 1. He's impulsive by nature. We know that. 2. During S2, he tried to advocate for himself, for some solo level-upping, and most in the team discouraged his idea. Even the coach, Ukai-kun. This time, it's even riskier. Not only is Hinata wanting some solo level up training, but he also wants 5 days not practicing with Karasuno, right before Nationals. That means he's not gonna be improving his synergy with other setters/emergency setters, Suga & Nishinoya. If you go back to S2 to S3, Noya has NEVER given a back row toss to Hinata even when Hinata was part of the synchronized attack. Given these factors, maybe subconsciously, Hinata knew Ukai won't let him crash the training camp.

Takeda for MVP is a good shout.

I dont see that as Kageyama rubbing it in tbh, i see it as a show of respect and competitiveness. It's like he said "I'll be taking the lead and wait for you to catch up". I genuinely think that at this point Kageyama has mad respect for Hinata as a rival, even tho Hinata is still very lacking.

I don’t know if yall noticed but Coach Ukai(current) his voice changed because the main voice actor passed away in October(7 years ago tho) from a brain stem hemorrhage. He only recorded 3x1-3x8

The best thing is that, they were embarrassed for the hinata scenes but they really forgot 10 min before they too forgot about the scenes which they watch at the end of 3 seasons😂😂😂 Both embarrassing moment happened at this video together... you both are like hinata😂😂😂

Oh, I didn't even think about it, but I love the new intro! Very hype to listen to :) Oh, yeah, Hinata this episode for sure was something... Poor boy, just wants to get better. And like, I can respect someone who creates his own opportunities wherever he goes (although I'd be too embarassed myself) but he really doesn't think about the consequences for others, does he ^^' Btw, Carlie calling Takeda "the nice poet man" was super funny to me, I'm still giggling about it. He's actually their teacher and everyone always forgets, lmao MVP is actually super hard for this episode. I personally felt a bit of spite from Washijo, so I wouldn't put him as MVP, but I also don't think Daichi stood out too much compared to the rest. Sorry, no idea for this one
