That scene of where Azula goes to find Zuko at their old family beach house is one of my favorites in this episode! I always liked that she knew him well enough to know where he went. One of the few times where Azula shows some sensitivity and awareness of how sad/messed up things are.

Plus the way she acknowledges how hurtful that home makes him, like when she wants to be she can be a very caring sister, she’s just been so groomed to be this manipulative and evil person, this episode really shows the true versions of all of them, Azula even opens up by trying to act like it doesn’t bother her but that’s clearly not true, ugh this is one of my favorite episodes in this book

Here's the thing with Azula. She was messed up, but she was being enabled by her poop for brains dad and let's be fair, her mother too.. When everyone sees you as a monster, you just become it. While that doesn't pardon her actions, you can understand why she does what she does. I like her as an antagonist, because quite frankly she is multi faceted. Her not knowing how to talk to a boy was such a good thing to show. She was just never used to being vulnerable and being sensitive requires being vulnerable. Your heart goes out to her because she desperately needed Iroh's guidance and love. Also a really important point is her own parents didn't know how to reach out to her. They just saw her as an abomination. Her dad used her and her mom gave up on her. Lot of the times, kids like this require a different method to reach out to them. I genuinely think Iroh could have also tried something with her. Maybe teach her to use her strength and cunning for good. This way, she doesn't have to cowtow to "normalcy" and still be a good person. Another important lesson from the show, not everyone is inherently evil. It is just people who act the only way they know how and society not understanding how to help them.
@batmanvsjoker77252 ай бұрын
I like this episode because we get to see a different aspect of Azula. One of a girl who's so brainwashed and conditioned to be a perfect soldier that she can't act like a normal teenager. She shares some of her insecurities, shows a more sensitive side and even admits to jealousy and apologizes to Ty Lee, something extremely rare for her.

@simphiwinkosindaba10362 ай бұрын
This episode is what sold A LOT of people on Azula. It’s very subtle but it does a lot for her characterization. This is why people who have seen the show are very quick to remind others that Azula is 14 years old. Unfortunately I think the people around her were very quick to deem her a lost cause but 14 is so young and up until this episode it’s hard to really grasp how young she is because she is so competent. The tiny bit at the end about her mother gives a lot away without forcing her to be out of character. That tiny moment of vulnerability is immediately smothered because you know that she’s been conditioned by Ozai to view it as a weakness. Zuko had his mom and Iroh…Azula had Ozai. And in all honesty I’m sympathetic towards her more than anything else at this point because the show makes it really clear how much of a difference having a positive influence in your Guardians can make. We see it in Zuko time and time again but Azula was never really given that (as far as we’re shown). I honestly think that she was gifted and so she was praised and uplifted by her father so her mom assumed that she didn’t need to be coddled as much as Zuko who was less gifted and so shunned by his dad. Because mom was so focused on showing Zuko the acceptance and the nurturing that he wasn’t getting from his dad, Azula probably felt somewhat neglected by her mother and was left with only positive reinforcement from her father, who rewarded cruelty and cleverness. This is how we end up with the Azula in the show.

Not to mention her mother clearly favored Zuko because she feared the traits in Azula that she'd already learned from her father, but in turning away from her like she did she just left Azula even more vulnerable with no one to turn to but Ozai. It makes sense why Zuko has a more caring nature, because he was given love and understanding by his mother, but Azula didn't get even that. She had to learn to be cold and calculating very early to protect herself.

@@gyozapunkI think azula had narcissistic psychopathic tendencies plus her talent in fire bending made her father favor her and her mother to maybe unintentionally separate herself from her. Her father brought the worst parts of herself and nurtured those instead of trying to balance them out, he prioritizes power and cold blooded emotions. Azula could have been nurtured and loved to lessen her flaws aka her narcissisim and maybe make her sympathize more with others, although I believe she would have needed a lot more work than zuko. Zuko was born with a kind personality from the start but just like azula he could have leaned in to the bad and dark side if it wasn't for the guidance of his Mom and Iroh.

People have an idea of how Zuko is supposed to be and are looking for someone to fix him,when that actually is not what makes him happy. He feels probably a little exhausted around more energetic people and he enjoys hating the world with Mai the most with subtle dispalys of affection.

I've always resonated with Mai's character and completely understood her way of being, but also really felt sad for Ty Lee. Just imagining what it would be like, being surrounded by people exactly like you 24/7 and realising that you are nothing special, that you will never be special -- it feels so bleak and discouraging. I would want to run away too. Be someone. Make something out of myself, yearn for excitement and change. I believe Ty Lee is a very kind and sympathetic person, despite being raised under the fire nation regime, and just because she hasn't suffered greatly like others, I think she is still capable of amazing things. Heck, she found herself, her identity by joining the circus and gained insane skills that no one can replicate!! I think it's easy to dismiss an easy-going, surface-leveled character, but there is a lot of courage in those who choose to smile and start their lives anew. Love your reactions

Yup, this episode just rounded out and made her characterisation clear. Azula is my favourite character for sure, and yeah this episode is so helpful in actually writing (in a "show don't tell" way for most of it, beside the one "my mother thought I was a monster" quote) everything that was kinds of obvious but never explicitly written into the show. This plus obviously the end of her character arc which starts much later on are the two big moments for her.

Like ya, Ty Lee's backstory doesn't seem as bad as the others, but at the end of the day, the worst thing that has ever happened in your life is the worst thing that has ever happened in your life, even if someone else's worse thing seems much worse. One of the episode's points is to show that she's just a messed up kid, just as much as Zuko. She always had an edge, she always would have been kind of an uncaring asshole prodigy with a competitive streak, but she wouldn't be that bad if not for how her parents raised her. Just the idea that you can earn people's loyalty, love and friendship through something other than fear would make her ten times better a person. And that horrible concept of loyalty through fear clearly came from Ozai's teachings.

Book 3 is showing us that the Fire Nation isn’t all evil, and I think this episode did a great job showing us that even our villains aren’t inhuman. Everyone showed some vulnerability, showing that even bad people are human. And sometimes it’s our vulnerabilities that push us to do bad things. Like, I have no doubt Azula’s mom loved her and did not think of her as a monster. She was concerned about the path Azula was on, but you can feel the love Ursa has for Azula in her short screen time. But I think Azula misinterpreted her mother’s frustration and fear about her future as a fear of Azula. If Ursa and Azula could have had a heart-to-heart and Ursa could have shown Azula that her gift for fighting, cunning, and people analysis could be used for good, I wonder if Azula might have become a different person. 😮 Instead, her mom was removed from her life and she listened to her father’s indoctrination. 😔

Considering Ty Lee's backstory and being a sextuplet, it's interesting that only she ended up in Azula's friend group when they were small children. That implies that most likely Azula picked her out of all her siblings for some reason. I imagine that might have started her on this journey where she yearned to stand out more like Azula did and running off for the circus when she got older. Azula ruined that by forcing her to leave but I imagine it's partly why she has any affection for her.

This is leaning into the idea of Zuko and Azula's shared problem...their childhood and family. They have both been forced into a role as soldiers. You're supposed to combine this with your knowledge of episode 2, The Headband. Now you understand the Fire Lord's role under the current regime, possibly even before. Azula is just as much a little soldier as Zuko was, the only difference is she's good at it, but it still has its consequences. There's a price for an abusive narcissistic parent encouraging you and then counting on you, as well as a price for letting them down. Both children live under Ozai's constant pressure and judgement, and there is no room for actual parenting or acceptance. However, we know Zuko found a little loop hole. Rejection from one parent still leaves another, and so Zuko clung to his mother who loved and accepted him before she went away. And with her gone Iroh remained. And with the loss of his own son, their uncle/nephew bond grew even stronger akin to father/son. Azula sort of missed these opportunities because her father was a constant source of praise and status...and sadly, example. So then, instead of seeing better figures in her mother and uncle, her father teaches her that they're actually weak or lesser figures. She gets caught up in what every other Fire Nation kid gets caught up in...the Fire Lord is an icon and a model human being. Being an isolationist nation there's no world to really contradict this concept. So Ironically, Ozai's rejection of Zuko causes him to see other role models and free himself, while Azula gets praise and adoration but remains mentally tied to her father's beliefs.

All four of the evil quartet were messed up by their families and a lifetime of knowing only war. Ty Lee goes along with everything. Mai is dead inside except when she's around Zuko. Zuko is still battling the influence of the Fire Nation vs the influence of Iroh. Good and evil. Azula broke long ago. I can't imagine the shit she's gone through visited upon her by her father to become a copy of him. It's sad that she sees Zuko as the one that is broken and prone to do anything to curry favor. She's actually the lap dog of her father. She's given everything for his favor including her childhood, friends, family, and humanity. And, in this episode you can see that she knows that.
