I don't like Nohebi's play style but I wish they kept a scene from the manga which they didn't show us in anime. Kuroo actually defends Nohebi when some spectators/other team players say things like they deserve to lose because of all the cheating. Kuroo highlights that Nohebi's main weapons are high level defense and well controlled serving, very clever playing around the blocks. He mentions if you don't pay attention to how good they are, you will never beat them. (Chapter 206)

And they aren't even cheating tbh. Their tactics are unsportsmanlike at worst, but they aren't necessarily breaking any rules or are doing something that gives them an unfair advantage that the other team can't do as well. It's not like they're roiding up, or are using illegal gear/sportswear that make them jump higher than they actually can. Like everybody else, they just mastered a certain aspect of the game. While other teams were perfecting their serves, or in the case for nekoma, their defense. Nohebi just mastered gaming the officials who decide when you get or don't get points. Don't hate the player, hate the game who relies on people to make perfectly "objective" calls and decisions in a fast paced sport.

18:22 We actually came pretty close to having both Karasuno and Nekoma be the protagonists - the author considered it and consulted with the editor, but ultimately decided against it. Kuroo and Kenma were some of the first characters that the author drew though, and Kageyama used to look like Kenma. 19:50 Tokyo prelims are in November, Spring Tournament is in the beginning of January (it was moved up from spring to allow the third-years to participate more easily with their entrance exams and whatnot). 21:54 With S4, there was a lot of unfortunate timing with the pandemic, major switches in the animation team and the art style - part of the reason for the art style change was to make it closer to the manga's, since it was also rapidly evolving. It's a shame that the team didn't have the best environment to find their groove (and we see somewhat more outsourcing than normal in S4), but they still did really well given the circumstances imo.

I like Nohebi's inclusion in the story, because it depicts the reality of not everyone playing "fair and square" in sports. Yes, it's their school banner's quote and it makes it ironic and hypocritical, but that's the whole point. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad people off court, seeing as how some of them disagree with the captain's philosophy, or even seeing a different side of them just being regular highschool kids in a relationship.
@DNeonLamp11 ай бұрын
I personally never hold anything personally against my opposition unless it's violent or they're bullying when winning solidly. I dislike choosing to use poor "strategy" to get ahead on the field, and ultimately you shouldn't because it doesn't actually get you ahead against better teams. But that gets left on the field and if you keep it onto he field too then we're fine at games end.
@jakeDgirl11 ай бұрын
4:55 My interpretation of their banner is that since their mascot is the snake = evil/corruption, they've twisted their motto from "Fair & Square" to "Everything's fair in war" lol 6:15 Small detail: Taketora is reeling Lev in because the ref isn't liking his boasting. The snake team kept bowing whenever they made "mistakes" and gave a good impression to the refs. In comparison, the ref would subconsciously not like Lev's boasting/intimidation by growling. 6:50 It's more technical than heartwarming team spirit. The snakes kept targeting weaker receivers, especially Lev who's the only 1st yr, and a wing spiker. That's a predictable pattern that a smart guy like Kuroo took advantage of. Meanwhile, someone like Oikawa changes targets: weak receiver, or in-between receivers, or a short serve to the front, or a dump. Snake captain is more predictable than Oikawa.

I understand why people hate Suguru and Nohebi, but I can't bring myself to hate him. "People say do everything you can to win, but they aren't really willing to do EVERYTHING." This is a bit paraphrashed but I loved this line from Suguru in the manga. It gives a lot of insight into his mentality. The Path of the Ball OVA is pretty fun, but it's one of the sections where they cut the most material from the manga. Yamamoto from Nekoma, and the entire Nohebi team kinda suffered as a result.

I actually have a soft spot for Nohebi. Even though they skirt the rules and are unsportsmanlike, there is some value to "playing the game" and using tactical grey areas to your advantage when you have some weaknesses in your game. I never condone outright cheating in sports, but I like a team with an edge that aren't afraid to flirt with the grey areas of the rules. An example of this would be how the ace gave the ref a blind spot and won the out of bounds for his team. In football, Mourinho is a great example of this way of "playing the game". I was never a fan of the teams he managed, but if he came to my team and added that edge I think a lot of people would actually rally behind him. It's the classic thing of being "a bad guy, but he's our bad guy".
@ronankelley776811 ай бұрын
I was looking for this. It's super annoying to play and root against, and you love it when it's on your team, but overall I just respect the commitment to winning and doing whatever it takes to achieve one's goal.
@idiosyncrasy770310 ай бұрын
It's not even their fault a fast paced game like volleyball relies on human subjectivity to make a quick and accurate call on whether the ball landed 2 mm inside the court or 2 mm outside the court. They saw that the human component of the officiating can be manipulated a bit and they mastered playing around it. It honestly takes skill to know when you can pull off shit like that in the heat of a high paced game. That's why I dislike people calling them "cheaters" when they aren't even breaking rules. It's not like they're roided up or are using illegal shoes that make them jump higher than they actually can. They're just a clever little bunch who don't shy away from unconventional tactics to give them every little edge they can get.

In Japan, avoiding cheating by using referees' decisions like Nohebi Gakuen's is as abhorred as actual cheating. This may seem too serious, but the Japanese never welcome this as they want to compete solely on playing skill. The evidence for this can be seen in the words and actions of actual Japanese athletes in the form of a “fair play spirit.''
@mitchr16198 ай бұрын
Again im commenting rlly late on these but I actually like Nohebi a lot; theyre a very realistic team to me (mind you i havent read the manga but i hear theyre painted more negatively in the anime anyways). I didnt play on a volleyball team beyond elementary school, but played other team and single sports, especially doubles badminton which operates very similarly to volleyball. Theyre not even cheating, just being mindful of every detail and influence possible, this includes trying to influence the ref. Teams will be hurt as well as benefit from bad calls that is just how it works. Nobody realistically tries to change the refs' mind when questionable calls go in their favor. In my opinion them spending all of their energy to gain any slim advantage, even before and after the whistle is respectable. Every team wants a win at all costs truthfully. They may be a bit more verbally hurtful but many teams we've seen try to get under the opposition's skin. Sry im done yapping

Nohebi and suguru keep being disliked by people that never played sport seriously. Manipulating the refs and trashtalking are a part of the sport, and are Fair territory. If the ref get conditionated by the fans or the players is his fault and if you can take advantage of it should go for it, same thing with exposing opponents weak mindset. Sport Isn't fair, never was and will never be so taking any advantage you can is not only okay, is ideal. It shows your desire to win. Fhe crossing line is when you could phisically hurt someone. That is unacceptable. But what Nohebi did is completeyl fine. At the end of the game fhey were able to "stole" one single point and trashtalked pretty mildly the opponents. I've seen doing way worse in oretty much every game i played or watched.

For me, "cheating" would be more something along the lines of: Using illegal performance-enhancing substances, sabotage, bribery, things like that. But Nohebi were just manipulating the psychological aspect of the game.

@erict162811 ай бұрын
@@gentleman_oni Trash talking would be manipulating the psychological aspect of the game. However, when they intentionally called the ball "out" when it was in, while hiding the ball from the sight of the ref, that's cheating.
@erict162811 ай бұрын
Wrong. I grew up playing different sports seriously and what Nohebi did was still cheating. It's one thing to trash talk, but it's another thing to intentionally LIE to the refs to gain points. Manipulating the refs like diving in soccer and flopping in the NBA is borderline cheating, but what Nohebi did was worse than that even. They intentionally hid the ball from the ref's view and then LIED by calling the ball "out" when it was actually in. You speak like someone who is okay with your favorite team cheating to win because you have not played sports seriously and don't know what sportsmanship is.
@DNeonLamp11 ай бұрын
As someone who does play sport, no, it's not 'fair territory'. It's not cheating but being an asshole is being an asshole and the people playing against you and watching you play are rightful to be against you skirting the rules with plausible deniability. Same goes for "exposing opponents weak mindset", it's not a strategy that actually wins you games against good teams, it just gets you slightly further against worse ones. Do you think it's right to scrap for middle of the pack position using bullying? At the end of the day, one player is better than the other and rather than beat them in play they take it outside of the rules, and in a very real example this doesn't always end well. I've had a couple players over the years play this 'mental game', and some players will actively improve in response to being called out like that. In an even worse example, I've had a player get punched and had to come off for injury. Violence is wrong and the other guy was rightfully suspended, but from a "strategic" standpoint we lost the better player because beating his opponent wasn't enough for my team mate, he had to "play the mental game" too. Also, guess which players on my team got hit more often by the opponent's who also used plausible deniability to get revenge. When you're better, letting the game devolve into skirting the rules will only ever work against you because the other team can do it to. It's simply not a strategy. It's not "strategic", it riles up the opponent for better or for worse and you have no control over which it is. Kuro points out himself in a scene not shown in the anime that Nohebi's actual strategy is solid defence and serving.

I don't prefer Nohebi's playing style to a more "honest" one, but I can respect it nonetheless because they are actually skilled and passionate and hard working. The trash talk etc. is their "little extra" to give them an advantage, but they are still a strong team even if you take all that away. If their plays were solely based on them doing dirty shit for funsies, I wouldn't respect THAT. Also, Kuroo respects Daishou and Nohebi and seeing how Kuroo is a respectable player, I think that speaks volumes too. But I can understand anyone who is hesitant to like their style, still.
