Carhartt versus Dickies work pants.
The most common item I buy for work is pants. They tend to wear out quickest, and in fact the search for the best work pants is what led me to start doing these comparisons in the first place.
If I'm going to do some pretty demanding work like cutting up a tree or working with rigid conduit, I like to wear double front work pants. The extra material really makes a difference in longevity since theres basically twice the fabric to wear through, you can almost count on getting double the life out of pants like this. Of course that comes at the expense of a little flexibility and comfort, but it's a worthwhile tradeoff in my opinion. But which is best? Does Carhartt remain king of workwear, or will Dickies take the work pants crown?

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

I just bought the Carhartt double-front pants, and I can’t wait for them to come in. I’m in my first year as an electrician’s apprentice, and I hear so much talk about which tools are better than others like Klein vs Knipex, but you’re the only electrician that talks about the unspoken tools, clothes. Your content is priceless.

Dee, Carhartt and Dickies are very different in Europe. First, here in Europe, they "are not" workwear clothes. Those brands are more related with street/urban fashion, sports (skate, bmx....) and some music/cultures,so they use to be sold in shops and malls, next to brands like: DC Shoes, Ellese, Mitchell & Ness,or back in the day Ecko,Karl kani... In consequence, price, are more much expensive in Europe. I wear a lot of dickies stuff since my teen years and price use to be about double of US price (at least): A pair of jeans are about 80euros (circa 90 dollars), multipocket short about 50 euros (circa 55 dollars) a plain tee about 24 euros (circa 26 dollars)....Carharrt stuff is even more expensive, a pair of jeans 95/100 euros (circa 110 dollars), cargo shorts about 70/75 euros (circa 80 dollars). Since the new millennium, both brands landed in hardware shops and workwear shops, but price are similar to mall shops...

One thing about the yoke in the back, it drops the pockets lower and is very annoying trying to get things out of the bottom. Also technically it is not a hammer loop, (I know that is what it is called and most used for)the pocket and loop were for holding welding rods. That is why it is on the left side. The majority of people are right handed, stinger in right hand, rods accessible on the left

Great review. I've been wearing Dickies for 20 years. They fit great for me where nothing else does. Far as work goes I get 5+ years from a pair of dickies and give them no love. It don't matter what oil/dirt/grime you rub into them they wash clean. They always look un stained after washing. That's a big deal for work pants and the comfort I get from them every time I put them on.

I work at brown coal power station as a security technician for the better part of 10 years. I went through a lot of pants from cotton cargo, to riptstop to hard yakka and king gee which are Aussie faves. But i found they all fell apart after several months of wear. Seams split, mostly in the crotch, knees tore, pockets broke. Then I discovered Carhartt and bought a pair and they were the gift from on high. Ive grown from one pair, which I still love and are my go tos, to 7 pairs of pants, jacket, two hoodies, multiple tees & flannels. As hard as Carhartt is to get in Australia its one of the most comfortable, warm, practical and reliable brands I've found. Plus I can get it in my size (I clock in at 160kg and 186cm tall) so finding off the shelf in my size is nigh impossible. I will go Carhartt over anything any day.

Great videos sir . To answer the question in this video though, I have plenty Carhartt and Dickies pants and your review is pretty spot on in my opinion. Dickies is more comfortable and doesnt need break-in time, Carhartt lasts a little longer and a bit more sturdy. I dont have a preference with the pants, you cant go wrong either way. A good tip to save some money on these types of pants is to look for "factory seconds." I purchased three pairs of Carhartt double fronts for about $30 each, and although they say they could have minor imperfections, I haven't found anything wrong with them. Now I am heavy into Carhartt and both several new and second hand pieces, including the duck double front pants and dungarees. I love them both and today I found a dickies duck pants, which felt great on me really - soft and relaxed fit. I was in doubt to buy them at the day price, but if they are in the store around thursday I will probably buy them for about 7$. Which is a pretty good deal for mexican work pants in Eastern Europe. Carl Murawski So I ended up getting the Carhartt double front work pant off dungarees. I bought the factory 2nd honestly it’s really nice because you get the quality and the reduced price but there’s a imperfection almost no one will ever notice. Not sure your opinion on the matter is, but I think they are a excellent option for people who don’t have the money for the ones off the site I think that would be a good video idea or one you could bring up in a discussion. Not sure if you noticed this but the sizing is a bit strange on the waist I am a 34 and ordered as such and they were pretty tight. I still love the pants gonna wear them anyways and just hope the duck canvas will stretch with time. Haha then after I got them I searched them up on KZbin to try to relieve my buyers remorse and there was your came out about a hour before the package came in the mail. Much cemented my buy I am very happy with my pant and I completely agree with your video carhartt just does it better but dickies is a good option for for novice level workers or people who can’t afford OR deal with the break in period I remember with my carhartt jacket it took like a month or two to break in and in that time the material was firm super boxy and alittle tough to move. But after that it’s the best jacket you will ever own and I am sure it is the same with the pants.(Carhartt choir jacket)

This stuff is expensive in Australia so I buy my own from the US and still save even with the shipping. Carharrt is over the top with Australia pricing. They’re regarded as a fashion item here whereas they’re just working mans gear in the US , as they should be. I usually snip the hammer loop off as it’s more of a PITA than a benefit and is an entanglement hazard too. I can buy and replace Dickies for a lot less so tend to buy them. Just sold 4 pair slightly used Carharrt rip-stop pants and can confirm they’re almost ridiculously heavy duty. Too heavy for here but the tan colour was excellent for not showing the desert dust and cooler unlike the crappy dark blue work pants the rail companies seem to insist everyone wears. I like the Dickies twill cargos and their basic jeans are good value too.

I've been fortunate with my line of work that the company has provided me with uniforms. The uniforms always came with Carhartt denim carpenter style pants. I do prefer the Carhartt brand of carpenter pants but, I've personally purchased the Dickies brand of denim carpenter style pants & the Wrangler Rip Stop carpenter style of pants also. The Dickies & Wrangler brands have both held up very well for the things I do when not at the "Day Job". My only disappointments with the Dickies brand is the fly zipper is a lighter gauge & the denim seems to stain the vinyl seat of the equipment blue when spending a lot of time in the operator seat. I did like the Wrangler Rip Stop pants was the double front on the legs.

For cheap pants that wear in and not out try Cactus Cupertrousers from Christchurch in New Zealand. Made with a canvas blend of polyester and cotton they are regularly tested in cement mixers for durability. If you want something tough go with the Supertrousers. In the UK Dickies have some great value work trousers. Carhartt can be a tad pricey for working. It seems to act as more of their fashion arm. I love both brands. But if I were wearing Carhartt trousers I’d have to make sure I wasn’t doing anything that might get them too dirty 😀

Buy enough pairs so you don't have to worry about laundry for the week if these are your everyday work pants. Carhartt is overall better but 3 Dickies pants beats 2 Carhartt pants. I have seen guys just spray inside of their pants with a spray instead of washing them for the week. Some of my more experienced coworkers even told me how they wardrobe certain stores by wearing them straight then exchanging them for the same pair.

I feel like it's regional. In southern California, you can find dickies clothing (casual and work) just about anywhere. The only places I ever saw carhartt was at sears and it was twice the price of dickies pants. That being said, I am a big fan of carhartt midnight zip up hoodies. They are a bit short but if that's not an issue they will last you a good few years.

This is very true. I grew up in Orange County (southern California) where dickies were my go-to work/school/everytime wear, but for the better part of a decade I’ve lived in Detroit and Carhartt reigns supreme.

I dunno about regional, but I think outside of New England and dedicated industrial cities Carhartt has more limited distribution than Dickies. In the Midwest Dickies are in about every Wal-Mart and Menards while Carhartts are found in Meijers, Rural King, or dedicated workwear stores. Wal-Mart and Menards are much more common than Meijer or RK.

Worn both brands for 15-20 years, in my experience one brand holds up as long as the other. Carhartts are a baggier fit which I don’t care for, the Dickies are a more regular fit which suits my build better. One clear advantage Carhartt has is their front pockets have a larger opening and much easier to slide your hands in, Dickies are smaller and can have a bit of a tight feel, especially when seated. I love my Carhartt bibs, have yet to try Dickies in those. And I wish both/either offered a pant without the hammer loop and give me the utility pockets like the opposite side, I throw pliers n such in those often.

Being an Aussie i was taken by the Carhartt double front, which i’d prefer over the dickies but i cant find any Carhartt locally. So i ended up digging up my Aussie equivalent the “ Hard Yakka Men's Legends Cargo Pants” which are nicely patina’d with hardwood stains, the odd spot of paint etc after some serious usage. I wonder how these compare to the Carhartts. The Hard Yakka’s have cordura panels in all high abrasion areas & being made with these panels, theres a good chance they could out-do the Carhartts. I wish i could upload a photo of them to show.

I believe in informed consent, and individual freedom so no Carhart for me anymore, used to be a user of their products but not anymore. Dickies is okay, and Wrangler is fine, both suit my line of work which is military aircraft and related equipment maintenance. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, if you don't like mine then tough shit.

I have only had bad luck with Dickies. My Carhartts seem to have much better all around construction. My Dickies (granted, not double front) felt flimsy and never lasted long enough to disprove that feeling. They never lasted even as long as a good pair of jeans. IMO the price differenece is well worth it for Carhartt.

I hot 4 prs of them n sooo comfortable n look great! I am a 34 w in their Dungarees but got 33 w in these Work Pants as they have a stretch waist band which stretches to allow about an inch at the waist so got these in 33w n they were spot on fit! Sljvbg narrower fit than their Dungarees as they are a loose fit these are a relaxed fit! Highly recommend them I got 4 prs in them!
