I came across Caravanserai in 1981. Song of the Wind became my Aeolean inspiration ever since. Incredible sense of the Journey of Life, like a Caravan across the Desert Sky in the wind blown shifting sands erasing all trace and leading forward into the unknown, living only in the present. At the One & Only Touessrok in Mauritius one year, the local band playing poolside dinner was a darn exceptionally tight 10 piece group. The lead guitarist near the end of the evening asked for a final request on folded paper. Numerous guests walked up. He sifted through the stack, and his eyes lit up as he picked one out, stating it would be the last song of the night, Song of the Wind. I thought, NFW, as we looked at each other across the way. He knew it was me. He spoke quietly and looked at his band members, and their faces all got deadly serious. Then, they f-ing blew it out of the water and off the island. We were all dumbfounded. I figured there was no way, and he would just laugh it off. He didn't, we didn't. I'll never forget. Years before had seen Carlos do it live in Munich Olympic Stadium crowd. Incredible blessing.

It's cool but ... completely different in feel from the original. There was this emotional depth to the original version. The softness that became powerful, and then ended soft (much like the wind). This is more of a full-on rock from the get-go version.
@electricladdyland3 жыл бұрын
The original is never likely to be reached again. But this was not too bad for 47 years later, considering how most guitarists tone deteriorates over time. Neal's tone here is an improvement from some of his other contemporary stuff, and Carlos got a less muffled sound here. Bravo.
@santanafan17133 жыл бұрын
Totally Agree. What a shame they both didn't take the time to re-study the original album version and present it like that. That would have made so many people really happy. I mean there are plenty way less experienced guitarists who have YT video's in which they play the original version ( both Carlos's and Neil's part ) note for note and do great. It's not that hard. So Carlos and Neil should be able to pull it off too. This is just a sloppy jam over Fmaj7 and Cmaj7 while throwing in an occasional recognisable riff.......in all honesty, for 2 icons like Carlos and Neil its disappointing

this version of song of the wind seems to mock it, not celebrate it. Sounds like they're just tuning up.
@dadduorp6 ай бұрын
My guess is that they simply said, “Song of the Wind? Sure! Fmaj7 to Cmaj7 until we que the end.” 😂 …and just jammed away without even remembering the beautiful phrasing and lyricism of their original solos. You have to give credit to [original drummer] Michael Shrieve’s incredible input, Gregg Rolie’s expressive Hammond organ work and engineers Glen Kolotkin & Mike Larner for its timeless beauty.

ThePdxster This is probably 45 years after the original, what do you expect...note for note? The thing is they've probably not played together in a while though. It looks like a bit of a reunion where Santana is saying to Schon ...respect...now it's your time do it your way.

Dont get me wrong!!! I do respect Carlos and Neal love them as two great guitar players of our time but WTF i cant understand why this otherwise so beautiful "Song of the Wind" is so overloaded with improvisations riffs that one cant make out wich song they are actually referring too nearly unrecognizable here . If you listen to they original "Song of the Wind" from the 1972 released "Caravanseari" album you know what i am talking about. Hope they will find there way back in future to the old path of this great instrumental. See some Facts enclosed.According to the Simon Leng biography Soul Sacrifice, "Song Of The Wind" is "one of the finest Santana recordings. This guitar duet between Santana and Schon created a style of guitar playing and music that was unknown before, except perhaps in the work of Gabor Szabo, whose approach it recalls in spirit."Co-written by keyboard player, Greg Rolie, a very young Neal Schon, and the man himself, this beautiful instrumental runs to 6 minutes 3 seconds and is sandwiched between "Just In Time To See The Sun" and "All The Love Of The Universe" on the 1972 Caravanserai album. Although not as well known as "Samba Pa Ti" or "Europa", this is one of the finest tracks Carlos has created in his long Career.

when the jimjams are closin' in on me, this and "Europa", the albums "Caravanserai" & "Blues for Salvador" zoom right to the top of what I think of as my "Suicide-Prevention Soundtrack"= like, theme music to NOT slit yer wrists by! I got off-putted by the Santana 4 project, the reunion's theoretically cool but there's something bizarre in listening to 70-plus-year-old men grunt about "doin' it all night to ya baybee?" Heck's bells, even I managed to grow up a bit in the 50-year interim. The ONLY other artiste who manages to place as many or more tracks on THAT soundtrack is... TA-DA... Anoushka Shankar. She is a fine sitarist of classical bent, in no way is she merely resting upon Daddy's rep, but there is also an obvious trend among the younger classicists to dip into the popular-music culture of India. Violinists Kala Ramnath & (no relation) L. Shankar, U. Srinivas, guitarist Debashish Bhatatacharya are others. What Anoushka shares with Carlos is that sense that whatEVER else is going on musically, their playing is so blatantly and gorgeously, really Really REAL. Breathing Underwater, Rise, Traveller, TRACES OF YOU... she do go on!
