Featured is the chess game between Magnus Carlsen and Alireza Firouzja from the 2021 Tata Steel Masters. After move 7, Carlsen obtains a central pawn majority. Instead of accepting Firouzja's offer in the middlegame of a repetition of position, Carlsen implements a thematic pawn sacrifice in the center that completely changes the course of the game. What makes this game in particular special is Carlsen's 2nd pawn sacrifice that grants his knight an excellent post on e5 while also further weakening the black king position. Firouzja has a simple plan to push his passed a-pawn, and it's Carlsen who must be timely in his attack on the black king.

I just want to drop in and write a couple of nice words. My understanding of the game mainly comes from this channel, while the doctor facing the slippery one in bullet is more on the entertaining side (yes, I do often fall asleep watching check mating patterns by the doctor, narriditzky or by the slippery one). I would believe this is created on top of other things that goes on in life, so a big thanks to Jerry 😀

Learned a lot from this game from being able to attack by sacrificing not one but two pawns for better position! Many of us would abhor giving up material unless it led to instant mate not... 15 moves later!

12:46 at this point Jerry, do you think that Magnus had already calculated through what happens if after the queen check, black replies with Kh8? It seems to me inhuman and impossible to believe. Yet the double pawn sac + exchange sac would be rendered worthless if there is no good follow up after Kh8. Is this kind of calculation actually done at this level or is it more like strong intuition that “it must be at least a draw for white” kind of thought that is born from incredibly gifted natural talent. Thing is- I would have discounted the rook sac for not seeing a follow up to Kh8
@ChessNetwork
@ChessNetwork 2 ай бұрын
Calculation like that is certainly done at that level, especially with this being a classical game. It probably was calculated. It may also be that Rxe6 was found by elimination, given that white has to act fast.

at 6:00 can white immediately play g3, i'm not understanding the purpose of re3. The knight covers 1 square and the rook covers the other 2 so that diagonal was never an escape path. Anyway, great commentary as always!

Good eye…That is a way to win the queen, but black does get the knight and rook as compensation. Computer calls it even.

@@ChessNetwork ah, thank you. missed that the knight was undefended after g3. hence the purpose of re3 was to defend f3 and allow g3
