It's amazing how frequently he gets strong grandmasters into such strategical binds. I always feel like his contemporaries appear to be studying openings while Magnus is studying the game. It's an exaggeration, of course, but he just seems to make it look like he gets his opponents in to positions they don't understand. Thanks for the lesson!

Beginners deal with the same issues. I think that's the most outstanding thing in this game. How many times did you face such and annoying pin amd had to weaken the structure for better or much worse?

Watching Magnus play is such a pleasure.. as is watching GM King analyze his games. I'm always reminded that Carlsen won't be playing chess forever.. amazing we live during the time of his prime.

Usually if black commits to h6 and g5, then black usually plays Nh5-f4 and get an octopus knight. I wonder if that was possible in this game.

Very instructive how to play against h6- g5. Even stronger after white gets an open f- file. Thanks Danny. Your videos are allways very much appreciated.

H6 and g5 shouldn't be a big deal for black IF he isn't castled kingside. The problem was that a6 and b5 were played on the other side in classical fashion. I mean Carlsen makes the Berlin defense shine more than it probably should because it is more solid. I got goosebumps when I saw black castle. Nh4 was a classy move though and not too difficult to understand to get that pony where it belongs and gives black a hard time.

Herka. Of course, the English language has vastly larger vocabulary than lil' ol' Czech, but every once in a while I catch a moment where I think "Dang, I wish they had this word we have." Herka, a feeble or sickly horse, unfit for work due to age, having been overworked for a long time and/or malnourishment. Wiktionary actually suggests English does loan the word, but I suppose it's not commonly known/used in English. From the videos I have watched on this channel, I have "herka" especially connected to the Grünfeld, where black has repeatedly been made to regret their placing a knight on a5. I believe there was a Carlsen - Giri game like that some time ago. Thank you for the video. =) EDIT: Also, the internet suggests it comes from German word "göre." Thought it might be worth pointing out given your knowledge of that language.

I too can play like Carlsen! For the first four, maybe even five moves! The "easy" strategy looks anything but easy to me. Simply because I don't really understand it.

He just installs a painful pin that has to be dealt with by destroying your own structure. Playing h6 and g5 is so weakening that white often may sacrifize the knight on g5 just to keep the pin going when the other king is stuck behind it.
