Former Carmax employee here and I’d never buy a car from there . They price their cars on average about 2k over typical retail market value because of the “experience and confidence” . And anyone who’s worked in the service department there knows how many POS cars they are selling to customers . So many people come back after a few days or weeks of purchasing with mechanical issues that were missed during production. And yeah they sell a lot of cars that have been in accidents , they sell it as long as it doesn’t have damage to the frame but of course those frame damaged cars slip through the cracks and get sold to customers

I’ve bought 3 cars so far from CarMax. The first time was because I was trying to build credit and they were the only ones willing to finance me. I paid that loan off but went back to get a car for both myself and my wife. We just financed through our credit union that time. All in all we prob paid $4k more than we would have for all. Are combined if I were to go to other dealerships, but CarMax is FAR better to deal with that any of these other places

If you get turned down for a loan, you either need to lower the price of your car range or just not buy anything period and work on your credit by paying off your debt and saving cash for a cheaper car. I had to recently take a personal loan for some repairs that came up that were an immediate need to fix and I hated every second of having to sign that 12% loan but it has to be fixed. I had zero loans and didn't want to even take a loan. The older I get the more I shy away from bills and although I love cars to no end, I am sick of always owing someone or a bank money.

I feel sorry for those that have to have a vehicle now. The prices are insane. For instance, would you rather buy a new 4Runner, drive it for 100k and sell it for 15,000 less than new, or be the guy who buys it with 100,000 miles for $40,000? So first 100k for $15,000 or second 100k for $40,000. But if you don’t qualify for a new vehicle you have no choice. Except to not buy a 4Runner and maybe buy a Corolla. Never buy a Toyota used if you don’t have to. They don’t depreciate enough to justify it.

As a Carmax fan and employee 30 years ago I see a huge difference in quality. Crappy bodywork, dents, previous accident damage. They stand behind them but don't disclose work they did on site. The Maxcare warranty is great and I do plan on buying a vehicle from them when I retire. I don't want to be stuck with a vehicle I don't like and there I can exchange or return it. I will be covered bumper to bumper for 150k odometer miles. You just can't beat that.

The best thing about CarMax is their car appraisal. They offered me $11,000 for my 14 Corolla last year. I then tried to buy a 21 MINI from them and they wanted $400 a month. I was able to get a brand new 24 MINI for just a little more a month. I got 3.99% with BMW financial, CarMax was nearly 25%. The MINI dealership also matched what CarMax offered me for my Corolla. I did like that if you buy a car from CarMax they will let you bring it back in three days if you're not happy with it. Other than that you might be able to get a new car for what CarMax offers.

Screw carmax.. I purchased a vehicle there, returned it shortly after in the same exact condition and bought another one (after waiting for my $30k down payment to clear and the vehicle- which I had paid $1k to transfer arrive at my local store) which I was also not happy with and returned shortly after. At this point I had made my mind up that I would do some more research so that the next purchase would be my final one as I was going to be 100% sure that it's what I had actually wanted before purchasing. After the second return I was told by the manager that they'll NEVER do business with me ever again (meaning they will not buy a vehicle from me, or sell me one..I'm not even allowed to test drive). Both vehicles were returned in the same shape, so it's not like I damaged them or anything. Pretty shitty on their part to advertise a return policy and then if it's used when you're not happy with a $85k vehicle to ban the customer permanently for life..yeah, RIP.

@@sues3218 You are so right!...I have been buying cars for many years, mostly from private party folks...I always tell them , after agreeing to a price, that I will pay cash, but need to take the car to my independent mechanic, for complete inspection. Usually, there are a few things that need attention--so I use the estimate on repairs, to negotiate some more, telling the sellers that I need them to help me pay for the repairs, by dropping the price somewhat more, so I can make the repairs. Most folks are amenable to that. If not, then I walk away (prior to getting the repair estimate, of course!). Usually, I get the sellers, to pay for 50% of the repair bill. It seems like a fair way to go.

I watch financial markets daily. The Fed controls short term interest rates, but not long term ones. The Fed cut the the targeted Fed Funds rate (interbank loans between banks) 75 basis points already, and longer duration Treasury yields _increased_ in response. The "bond vigilantes" who fear future inflation, now dominate the credit markets, so car loan and mortgage interest rates are likely headed upwards. The policy of the incoming administration promises to renew the fiscally ruinous (for the federal budget) 2017 tax cuts, which probably means consumer interest rates will climb for the foreseeable future. I think Carmax and especially Carvana are pretty screwed going forward (they won't be able to market their subprime car loan portfolios, once delinquencies rack up), though its not _yet_ time to bet against their stock price. Maybe in a few months when the 10 year treasury hits 5%.

Hi there, I need some advice here. I missed my opportunity to buy a brand new 4Runner TRD Off-road. Now it is too late, dealers don't have them new. If they do have, they come with crazy markups. What is the best option/ place to buy low miles 2021-2024 4Runner. I'm even considering salvage options from Copart / IAA. What is your thoughts? Should I wait till spring 2025?

The pro you shared has less than 10K miles a year being a 2019. When it was new it was close to 50k. Seems like a fair deal. In addition financing wise. They have big name lenders that they use. And CarMax has no control who those companies approve, there isn’t a finance person in that building. Carmax’s has a lender company they own, but that is only for folks with top tier credit. Do more research my friend.

@@Griswold20 you think a 6 year old 4Runner is worth $2-3K less than its original MSRP? 🤔 interesting. Carmax has a lot of control of who they can approve. They have their own backed loans. So, take your own advice please… smh 🤦‍♂️

As long as people are having accidents and car's are in poor condition not worth to fix people are going to by car's. That said, Prices and intrest rates are still out wack for the average consumer. The only thing that's going to change this is a boom in the economy. 🇺🇸

Carmax customers have subprime credit. These customers cannot get an auto loan at a regular dealer and have few choices. Carmax makes its money financing to people with poor credit.

We just sold our 2012 Subaru Forrester with 83k miles to Carvana for double the dealer trade in offer, 33% more than the Carmax offer, and probably at least 25% more than we could have gotten selling it on our own. Accident free, well maintained and clean running but it did have some typical bumper scrapes , dings and scratches. The Carnava rep said they completely recondition the vehicle, so I’m guessing they have a well defined business model on what models/years/mileage are most profitable. It definitely made our selling process easier!

The best way to shop Carmax is to buy one that has just come off a lease. One-owner, regular oil changes and services, documentation, etc. Everything else is junk. Secondly, Carmax is in the business to make money. It is the consumers job to do their due diligence to find the condition of a vehicle. Carmax uses AutoCheck which is crap. Buying a Carfax report is worth the money if you find exactly what you want. The reason Carmax crushes it, and will continue to do so, is also because you don't have to deal with an incompetent used car salesman. Walk in, fill out the paperwork, walk out. They have good deals, you just have to be smart enough to find them.

I got a car from Carmax at a wonderful price (under wholesale). But that's where the positive ends. The car turned out to be a 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋 and I've had great trouble getting Scamax to honor their warranty. For weeks they lied about its condition saying it's running as it should and refusing to fix anything. Finally they admitted there's a problem when I took their mechanic on a ride and it practically conked out on the road and they are now fixing it. But I am not optimistic that those incompetent azzhoIes will repair it properly or that the car will be trouble free.
