Former Carmax employee here and I’d never buy a car from there . They price their cars on average about 2k over typical retail market value because of the “experience and confidence” . And anyone who’s worked in the service department there knows how many POS cars they are selling to customers . So many people come back after a few days or weeks of purchasing with mechanical issues that were missed during production. And yeah they sell a lot of cars that have been in accidents , they sell it as long as it doesn’t have damage to the frame but of course those frame damaged cars slip through the cracks and get sold to customers

At this point I had made my mind up that I would do some more research so that the next purchase would be my final one as I was going to be 100% sure that it's what I had actually wanted before purchasing. After the second return I was told by the manager that they'll NEVER do business with me ever again (meaning they will not buy a vehicle from me, or sell me one..I'm not even allowed to test drive). Most folks are amenable to that. If not, then I walk away (prior to getting the repair estimate, of course!). Usually, I get the sellers, to pay for 50% of the repair bill. I watch financial markets daily. The Fed controls short term interest rates, but not long term ones. The Fed cut the the targeted Fed Funds rate (interbank loans between banks) 75 basis points already, and longer duration Treasury yields _increased_ in response. The "bond vigilantes" who fear future inflation, now dominate the credit markets, so car loan and mortgage interest rates are likely headed upwards. The policy of the incoming administration promises to renew the fiscally ruinous (for the federal budget) 2017 tax cuts, which probably means consumer interest rates will climb for the foreseeable future. I think Carmax and especially Carvana are pretty screwed going forward (they won't be able to market their subprime car loan portfolios, once delinquencies rack up), though its not _yet_ time to bet against their stock price. Maybe in a few months when the 10 year treasury hits 5%.

That 2015 Corolla at $17k is super expensive. KBB on that is something like 8-10K my mom just got on with 56K on it. That thing is certainly not worth anywhere near $17K.

We just sold our 2012 Subaru Forrester with 83k miles to Carvana for double the dealer trade in offer, 33% more than the Carmax offer, and probably at least 25% more than we could have gotten selling it on our own. Accident free, well maintained and clean running but it did have some typical bumper scrapes , dings and scratches. The Carnava rep said they completely recondition the vehicle, so I’m guessing they have a well defined business model on what models/years/mileage are most profitable. It definitely made our selling process easier!

I hate to be that guy but…..We’ve sold 3 different vehicles to Carmax over the years and got a much better price than the low-balling dealerships were willing to give towards a trade. Sometimes $2-3K more.

Scamax offered $1000 for a car I wanted to sell. I laughed at their offer and kept it. Several years later it was totaled in an accident and got $3000 settlement.

The best way to shop Carmax is to buy one that has just come off a lease. One-owner, regular oil changes and services, documentation, etc. Everything else is junk. Secondly, Carmax is in the business to make money. It is the consumers job to do their due diligence to find the condition of a vehicle. Carmax uses AutoCheck which is crap. Buying a Carfax report is worth the money if you find exactly what you want. The reason Carmax crushes it, and will continue to do so, is also because you don't have to deal with an incompetent used car salesman. Walk in, fill out the paperwork, walk out. They have good deals, you just have to be smart enough to find them.

I got a car from Carmax at a wonderful price (under wholesale). But that's where the positive ends. The car turned out to be a 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋 and I've had great trouble getting Scamax to honor their warranty. For weeks they lied about its condition saying it's running as it should and refusing to fix anything. Finally they admitted there's a problem when I took their mechanic on a ride and it practically conked out on the road and they are now fixing it. But I am not optimistic that those incompetent azzhoIes will repair it properly or that the car will be trouble free.

The great reset or recession has started in the auto industry. Ridiculous pricing. Not just Toyota. Most all are in trouble. Good enough. I have decided to wait to buy. I have loved Toyota for a long time. Lost faith in them. The 25 Nissan frontier looks good for the price however interior is lacking and resale value is aweful. So I’m going to just wait to buy
