@@AvocadoTalk I really enjoy watching both of your videos. I will be putting my Carmen in the ground this week. REM does the cold or heat affect your trees fruit quality? I live in the Central Valley and we have similar weather to where you live. I will also be putting my Sharwil in the ground this week as well.

@@raulcasas4548 Glad you are doing it, there are others growing them too in your area. I haven't noticed fruit quality based off of heat and cold, but based on where we are at, it means we have to protect them when they are young to ensure that survive. Once bigger and stronger, they will do fine. Different areas also means different times of the year when they are ready to be picked. Use the harvest times as reference but it is good to keep track. You are doing such a great job on your avocado trees, I am so amazed how fast your trees grow and produce fruit compared to mine. @@RareAvoTrees I got Palo d’Oro, Greengold, Ardith, Malama, Nimlioh. I killed the Ardith. I ordered in the past Daily 11, Martin, Bird Ave but backed out. One that I really want to get is Hellen so I might be ordering it.

Does the Gwen bear heavy vs others?

Yes it does bear heavy and that is why the tree stays small because of all the fruit. And it does it yearly where as the Fuerte is alternate bearing. The reason why it didn't catch on commercially is because the skin stays green when ripe and people preferred the skin to turn black like the Hass when ripe. I think it taste really good and have another tree ready to plant soon. Thanks for watching!

Carmen is a Hass, right, Just a "sport". So it should taste the same as Hass.

Hi Frank, very much hass like and I think that's part of the reasons why this Carmen has become very popular and have taken over being grown in Mexico. So a lot of our hass from the supermarket is probably a Carmen I would think. There are some differences because I think the hass that I have growing in my backyard right now peels a lot better more closely to the Gwen and how that peels. I was concerned that the Carmen was going to taste very watery and not flavorful. So that was my main concern before I planted another one. Thanks for watching!

Hi Tom, in this video I show the Gwen on the left and Carmen Hass on the right. The Carmen has thinner skin. In my yard I have other varieties that have thinner skin like Bacon, Mexicola, and Stewart. I'm in favor of skin that is more rubbery and peels nicely. Wow! That's a really tough question, I might have to pick as of right now GEM although my Carmen this year is flowering like crazy, so I'm curious to see how much fruit sets.

@@AvocadoTalk Thanks, that seems to be the opinion of most. My gem is small and had 50 fruitlets last year! Looks like I will stick with Gem for now. Appreciate the feedback!

@@growyourownavocados The problem is both of mine are just really starting out so it's hard to kind of say long term which one's going to be the winner. There are pros and cons for both though.

Don't plant another Hass that's boring and a large tree plant something more rare like big black Duke, Cannonball, Teardrop or Nimlioh or Marcus pumpkin.or your Hi state types you talked about.

I'm trying to be more focused on getting really good/excellent tasting avocados at this point. There are so many that are excellent and productive...How many do you have again?

@@RareAvoTrees Wow that is impressive. I'm at 52 total Avocados with 34 different varieties. Killed a couple unique like McArthur and Ardith. I didn't plan to plant so many Hass but the big box store mislabeled them.

@@AvocadoTalk I killed my Ardith also and Nabal and queen and a few more I'm colder than you in Fresno county harder to keep warm in winter they handle heat alot better young trees I do 30 to 50 percent shade cloth.
