Cut content from this video: before the bit about how the 2019 cartoon embraces the franchise's history, I said "Plus, in some ways, you could even say that the “To Steal or Not to Steal” interactive special with branching dialogue trees is basically a new computer game that you can play on your television." but cut it for time & pacing. I also recorded the line "No offence to the 90s cartoon, but I think I would much rather watch the new one than listen to a half hour of Squidward and Robin bombarding me with geography trivia at the pace of a bouncing rabbit." because I watched the first episode of the 90s Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego and didn't really enjoy it, but I couldn't find a place in my script for it and didn't want to seem too disparaging.

I always felt that the '90s cartoon depiction of Carmen Sandiego was very hard to root against in the way she carried herself. While she was the main antagonist, she was hardly what you'd call "evil". She was on the wrong side of the law, but had a code of honor that I always loved. Her words were smooth as silk. Carmen was trying to teach us a little something that went beyond geography. There are anit-heroes, and Carmen Sandiego was the anti-villain.

Carmen was never exactly evil in the 90's cartoon. She always saved Zack and Ivy and actually seemed to be upset when she thought they were going to get hurt. I only really had two real gripes with the series. One you brought up: that she doesn't inform ACME about VILE for an unknown reason. I think it could have been fixed in a satisfying way fairly simply, and not changed much, while adding interesting content. Unfortunately the second problem I have with the series is one that might not have been something they could have changed, and that is the length of some of the seasons and the series as a whole. I am disappointed that it isn't continuing and that we haven't had an announcement for a sequel series of some kind.
@violentblue3552 жыл бұрын
I think they could have done that first part well by building up the idea of a Carmen v. ACME narrative. Perhaps there was a time where Carmen and ACME did actually try to work together, but due to fundamental differences on how each party operates and Carmen's idea of using thievery, things simply didn't pan out. It'd be a great idea to use to also explore possible flaws in both Carmen and ACME, both of them being stubborn in believing that each of their own methods of fighting VILE are best. Carmen thinks that ACME are just a bunch of overtly-legalist glorified police officers who are too constrained by regulation and their own shortsightedness to see just how problematic VILE is, and ACME sees Carmen as a wannabe vigilante who commits the exact same crimes as VILE and does more harm than good. It'd make for a great story development to have this conflict come to a head in later seasons, as both Carmen's team and ACME have to put their differences aside to work together to stop VILE.
@redballoon90072 жыл бұрын
I think it was for two reasons. One of them is a spoiler sooo… One: The head director of ACME killed Carmen’s father so Carmen probably didn’t feel safe or obligated working with ACME. Or Two: The way Carmen works and the way ACME works clash a lot. Carmen probably would have felt restricted if she did any thing the “ACME” way. And ACME (while Chase and Julia did actually go along with her at times) probably would have gone against their own code if they followed Carmen’s lead.
@meghanavallururaju76502 жыл бұрын

I had a problem with the episode structure that for me tended to make me question the whole time 'is this girl actually good at thievery or not' and that is that at the start of each and every episode she will fail a heist or step of a heist get a clue from that then win in the final battle, this would be fine except for two points. One many of the times she failed are comparatively easier to pull off then the final heists and two that this pattern is so constant that it will give up key points that could be used to better the story in order to stick to the pattern. But on the whole it was well written I just wish they could keep Carmen's ability constant rather then the formula
@redballoon90072 жыл бұрын
@@michellekeppler982 I didn’t have this problem often actually- I know that Carmen wasn’t perfect and that she’d win in the end. It was a just the matter of how. There should have been more of a fight, the only one putting up a fight was Brunt and even she was taken down to easily(a net shouldn't have taken her down that easily).
@raulcerna10932 жыл бұрын
I think Carmen didn't tell ACME about VILE in the first place is because she just didn't trust them ,probably thinking they will arrest her when she was no longer useful (+she knew Chase worked with ACME and given that he is so adamant about catching her ,maybe she assumed that the other agents are the same ).And VILE blew up the island before Carmen and ACME started working together.About the faculty's capture ,i agree it should've been mote interesting ,but if you think about it Brunt is the only faculty member that can actually fight and the only other members of VILE we saw were Tigress and Mimebomb (he is not much of a fighter)so probably they were the only ones on site ,like i agree it could've been better especially since we saw that VILE has plenty of goons ,but it is what it is

I enjoyed watching the new series when I discovered it (some years later). While certainly some of the narrative could have been written better, I did feel it was nice to bring all the 3 main characters from the original show back. It did feel a bit like the series could have been a prequel to the Original series given the way it ended. Apart from how in the original she doesn't know about her family heritage. That being said, there is certainly room in her future for her to become that villain again for what she sees as a greater just cause which acme might not be able to see. My only big disappointment with the new series is that it ended so soon and it would have been nice to know after 3 seasons what happened next.

We went from a series where Carmen merely stole for fun and being the head of Vile to now going against Vile and being the hero. I can’t call this good but it is a weird interpretation of Carmen Sandiego. The series is in no way perfect but given its credit I am amazed that it was able to carry for four seasons as opposed to other Netflix shows that didn’t even get past one season or two. And I do agree with the other is that the ending was rushed and anticlimactic and did not really feel very satisfying considering the brainwashing Carmen has went through. Another issue I had is that she wins too much against Vile, like literally there is never been any episodes where a Vile actually scores a victory with her, until the end when she’s brainwashed but that’s not enough. She’s always way too successful in foiling their plans even if it seems like she failed. Like it literally could not hurt to have one episode where Vile wins and steal a historical artifact and she loses. But nope every time they do attempt it she’s always successful. If you’re having your heroes win all the time it just makes the series boring. And most of the characters in Carmen Sandiego was just flat and boring and did not have enough motivation so I did not root for Carmen in the series and taken down vile

Awesome video. Coincidentally, I recently played Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums on my PS2 and I simply LOVED playing that game. While Carmen is still more of an antagonist in that game, the fact that she continues to give clues to the main character makes me feel that Carmen has a bigger motive to these thefts than anyone could anticipate. While playing the game, I suspected more and more that Carmen was more than a superhero (or rather an anti-hero) than a criminal, suggesting that there is more to her than meets the eye. I also loved that art style in the game as well. It is quite fun actually and I highly recommend playing some time. Now, I have to admit that I have not seen the cartoon of Carmen Sandiego, as I did not like the animation style, but from what you said in the video, it might suggests that Carmen may have been a Hero from the get go rather than a villain. She is a great character and I hope we will hear about this character (rather via tv series, movie or video games) very soon...Fingers crossed...

There wasn't destruction of property, most of it was returned at the end (hopefully enough of the exceptions were pieces taken from rich peoples' collections), and if memory serves, it wasn't British Museum style either. Every piece of antiquity was fair game, rather than just those of indigenous populations. That all, and of course, it's a person doing what they want by ignoring what they are told to want, and not in the morally bankrupt sense. I haven't put it to words well here but hopefully my point still comes across. An amazing character doing amazing things for what I'd call worthwhile reason. There seems to be a pro police sentament in netflix carmen sndiego which doesnt sit quite right with me. And pro museum which is a big problem considering most artifavts we have are stolen goods that belong to the culture they were taken from. That wouldve beena much better approach toCarmen.

I am not a fan of shows being too progressive or alt right but this series is neither. Yeah there’s girl power but they don’t tell- they show. There is representation but it’s the best kind where they show and don’t tell. I hope you consider giving it a try at least! At least look up the fight scenes because they are awesome.

I was unsatisfied with the finale too. Things seemed to happen so quickly and then resolved just a quickly. Carmen being brainwashed and turned against her morals didn't seem like a high stake, even though it should have been; because of how quickly everything happened. They could have introduced that plot point a few episodes earlier, then elaborated on how Zack, Ivy, Player and ACME helps Carmen get back to her senses again. But other than that, i think the series was fantastic. Carmen was a kind of protagonist you don't often see in children's animated shows - smart, witty and cunning rather than the usual bubby, optimistic and blindly brave. Her character design didn't bother me much because she had to be flexible enough to do all the stuff she did, and not make much noise - something I'm not sure she'd be able to do if she was larger and more muscular. We still saw characters like Ivy, who had a more curvy body, and Chief Brunt who was definitely larger and more muscular, so it's definitely not the crew trying to yassify the women.

I have to agree. thought that's probably because the seasons became so ridiculously short. each season being 8 to 10 episodes and season 3 being a mear 5 episodes is crazy. I was shocked frankly. It felt worried about carmen getting brain washed but the moment I reminded myself this was the lasttwo episodes I was relaxed again. It was good, but it could have been so much better with more episodes.
@Lin-rh6qs4 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, the show was originally going to be 5 seasons, and, if so, Carmen likely would have remained brainwashed for much of season 5. I don't know when the last season was cut or why, but it would explain why they rushed that storyline so much. Personally would have loved a season all about her friends struggling to keep up with her and find a way to bring her back.
@maxixe31433 ай бұрын
@@Lin-rh6qs And seasons 3 and 4 were actually just one season from a production standpoint, so we really only got 3 seasons instead of 5. Netflix likes to split seasons into two smaller seperate seasons sometimes so it releases content more regularly.

That's why I fell in love with this show. I know I didn't watch the original series growing up since I wasn't even born yet, but this adaptation introduced me to the franchise in a big way. I've seen a lot of people give this show grief just because Carmen isn't a villain anymore. But as you said, this felt like the right direction. I enjoy the fact that Carmen has more of a character, with an engaging backstory. I also love the unique art style of the show. Something about it is so special and really pleasing to the eye. This became one of my absolute favorite shows, to be honest. I just wish it could have lasted longer but, it's totally fine! My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed and didn't feel all that satisfying. But overall, it was a great series. :)

This series is so underrated. One of the only remakes of existing content I actually liked. I compare it to Kim Possible all the time, and low key actually think it's better. This series was exciting to watch even fillers. I adored almost every character (especially Julia) and Quote "La Femme Rouge/ Madam Rouge" in an angry French voice as often as possible. We deserve another season of this fine show. >.

I LOVE this show so much. The only thing i'd change is the finale, as it needed a LOT more time. Unfortunately that's just how cartoons seem to be treated nowadays by the major companies that produce them. I can't remember the last time an amazing cartoon wasn't cut short.

It’s also because, in our current zeitgeist of “Eat the Rich, Burn Down the System” feelings about “criminals” and “the law”, it’s not hard for a character who’s villainy was only because she was a world class thief would be super sympathetic for the audience.

Eh, disagree. You're basically arguing against the idea of subtlety. Your argument boils down to, the show has her name, thus she must be on the screen as much as possible. I would argue that as a spy, as a thief, as a mysterious antagonist, the 90's show nailed it by having her in the show plenty, but having her be the mystery that those watching focus on and try to solve. I think that there's the case to be made that when your show's focus is supposed to be elegant and mysterious, there's something to be gained by not having them plastered all over the screen every moment. You start out by admitting that fans will see the complete reversal of the core part of her personality as a betrayal, but your only response to that is, well yes, but they had to, because otherwise they couldn't have carpeted the show wall to wall with her. Which you present not just as a good choice, but the only valid choice. I disagree wholeheartedly, and I think you're saying that your basis is, the only form of storytelling you think is valid, is writing the idea for the show in giant capital letters in sharpie and shoving it in your audience's face.

3 years too late, but I've always viewed the remake as the kids of the older parts of the franchise. You even see it in one of the first episodes, the lady who's signature red outfit Modern Carmen steals, IS the leader of V.I.L.E herself, the og Carmen Sandiego. That's why the Sandiego name is inside the hat when new Carmen gives Player her name. She has no idea the moniker is already in use, and makes it her own. I've always figured it would be very interesting for the two to meet face to face one day, the Original and the New Kid.

1:12 But isn't that like suggesting that because the book is titled "Where's Waldo," we should be seeing a bunch more Waldo? Or that we should be retitling Waitings for Godot and Guffman something else, as neither shows up? Like, the hook is exactly in the searching, the waiting, the unfindability of the titular character. Not that I'm not on board with making CSD an anti-hero. Just sayin', the title doesn't actually *need* to suggest that we be watching a story that *features* CSD - just that we're watching a story *centered* on her...or rather, the space where she should be.
