A truly underrated film. Also a film that shows great respect to the Zulu warriors.

That is one of the things that I like about the film. It portrayed both sides fairly. And frankly, the Zulu warriors were fierce warriors. Shaka helped make his tribe formidable fighters.

I watched this in high school 20 years ago and it was awesome. I thought it was really cool how they would use multiple lines of men to fire in volleys to compensate for the single fire muskets. The zulu were a force to be reckoned with, building to the attack i remember that silent unsettling calm before the assault. I remember the bulls head attack formation that was explained, two horns flanking then the head to sweep. Such a great film.
@enlightenerofcryptozoology8761 Жыл бұрын
Those lines of men firing after another are referred to as rotating volleys. And accurately the long arms wielded by the British in this movie are the single shot breechloading Martini Henry rifle.

An amazing war classic that portrayed both sides fairly as opposed to like Patriot. And this I knew would have a high count. Michael Caine, period weapons of the era albeit some rifles, both sides having formidable soldiers. And the lines of men firing after the other is one way to compensate for single shot firearms. Which is sometimes called a rotating volley. Which even despite their guns being rifles with longer range, loading from the breech as opposed to the older ways of muzzle, and metallic cartridges, the rifles are still single shot. So as shown, you fired one round then pull the breech lever below to open and eject the spent round to then load another round into the breech. Pull the lever back up and it is closed and cocked to fire. But when you have waves of enemies closing in despite that, it shows that disadvantage. This was a fantastic week of war movies, thank you so much Carnage!

So interesting fact about the guns in this film. Production couldn't obtain enough of the period accurate Henry Martini rifles for the film and none of the service revolvers, so often actors in the background or not in focus were given Lee-Metford rifles, which was in fact the replacement of the Henry Martini. The revolvers in the film were simply WW1/WW2 Webley revolvers in place of the original type.
@enlightenerofcryptozoology8761 Жыл бұрын
Though it is a single shot rifle, it has accuracy, range, and big man stopping round. You will feel the punch of that martini Henry round if hit by that.

One of my more favorite war films that actually gets most of the history right with a few exceptions (the battle was fought mostly at night for example). Good job on the carnage figures too Actual Zulu casualties: 351 killed, over 500 wounded. British: 17 killed, 15 wounded.
