CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES PR NIGHTMARE.
carnival crew member did something I'm sure they thought was a good idea on the carnival Vista. However it turned into a nightmare for the crew, captain, and Carnival's PR team. After Passengers were on board the carnival Vista they were told because of engine issues they whole cruise will change. Then they held a meeting with passengers and it did not go well.

Hi Don. I was on this cruise. You were able to get off that day and get a full refund. If you stayed you got the 400 OBC and 25% FCC. We stood in line for 90 minutes to get on the ship did not know why. We were not notified till we got on the elevator to our cabin. You should have heard that elevator 12 people all hot with all the luggage😂We were upset at first but tried to enjoy it. But so many were upset you heard it the whole cruise it put a damper on things. I still got a vacation just not the one I planned. We didn’t leave Florida till 9pm so those that wanted off and refunded could get off. I will never sail the Vista class again.

As a minimum, there should have been a full refund for the cruise if you wanted to cancel, and a 100% future credit if decided to stay on board.

Plane fare too? Keep in mind some people had to fly in rent cars rent hotels etc maybe one and only yearly vacation Absolutely they should have given them a choice,sweeten the pot for a free cruise to oringinal destination future date.

@@level11ethur84 We always have to fly in for our cruises, not many go out of the Midwest 😳😳, but seriously there have been times when our airfare cost almost as much as the cruise. So airfare is not cheap so I agree they should have given money for airfare or a free future cruise, I say this when they wait until the last minute to cancel or change your itinerary drastically when they knew this was going on. I would not feel the same if they told you a month before but still should give you some on board credit. They knew this problem well in advance.

Carnival has been off my radar since 2001. My husband and I booked a "Fall Colors Cruise" in January 2001 in an inside cabin on Carnival Victory for September 22, 2001, out of New York. Needless to say, with the Twin Tower tragedy occurring on September 11th, multitudes of people canceled their cruise, opening up loads of cabins. We couldn't afford to, since we had also paid for four other friends to cruise with us, including their flights. We flew into JFK on the red-eye the night before and were bused up to board the ship, now moved up to BOSTON (which now had an 8:00 p.m. departure time), on Carnival-owned buses. Somewhere in Connecticut, our bus broke down right in the middle of watching the movie "SPEED"! There we sat, for FOUR HOURS , while awaiting a replacement bus to get us to our ship! We made it just in time, even as they were closing off the MDR! My husband is a very mild-mannered man, but he kindly, but firmly, insisted that they remain open to feed us, since it was a Carnival-owned bus that MADE us late, and we hadn't had any food since 11:00 a.m. when we stopped at a mall SOMEWHERE in upstate N.Y. Thankfully, after consulting with their superiors, they allowed our bus load to come in and have dinner. It gets better...the next day, we encountered some other passengers from N.Y. that had booked the cruise three days before. Okay, that's fine. Except for one HUGE issue: Carnival was advertising, in a N.Y. Newspaper, ALL staterooms for $250 for the one week cruise. INCLUDING SUITES!!! They made NO offers to upgrade existing passengers that had booked MONTHS earlier and DIDN'T cancel!!! When we went to the Customer Service desk, they wouldn't even consider moving us up to a higher cabin. We'd been on several cruises prior to this one on Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian and since we always booked close to a year in advance, those cruise lines always extended an offer to upgrade us, for a very small fee, close to the sailing date, in an effort to fill the ship. They would bump us up to empty higher end cabins, and fill inside cabins. That did it for us. We haven't sailed on Carnival since. We were NOT impressed with their policy!

Just like air travel, the government needs to step in and start making cruise lines pay passengers for these "bait and switch" tactics. Carnival has known for a LONG time about the Vista's problems and i would be mad as hell too if my dream cruise turned into the shortest mileage and the most profitable cruise Carnival could do.

Why would one book a cruise on a ship that has continuing issues.? It is no longer unforeseen circumstances when it happens four times in recent memory. Passengers should get full refunds andCarnival should take the ship into dry dock and fix the issue

And don't forget, several of the revised destinations are their Private Islands, so all the money you spend there on excursions or cabanas or whatever, goes back to Carnival!

If you already paid for a drink package, what do you spend the $400 on? Specialty dining, spa is probably already booked up. Gamble it back to Carnival?

Right, everything is expensive and overpriced. These credits are worth pennies on the dollar (drink packages, photos, excursions, spa treatments, etc.).

I think they should have been refunded the difference between the.two itineraries and I would not be comfortable ever booking the Carnival Vista.

No doubt Carnival screwed the passengers because of not giving the oppurtunity to get a full cash refund. They should be ashamed! Never sailed on Carnival and this would definetly make me think twice about booking with them. And Don, thanks for keeping us all informed. It is much appreciated.

We have sailed Carnival twice, the second time to see if we still feel the same about Carnival as we did. Yes was the answer to that question. The ship we sailed last was Celebration and it was fine, food was good, entertainment was awful & for the most part people that sail Carnival are just not what we want to cruise with. Lots of over drinking & being loud. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a drink or two at the pool but not slobbering drunk or even drunk and talking loudly, lots of loud music (people seem to not know what headphones or earphones are & thinking you want to listen to what they consider music but you consider screaming while rhyming profanities. Not every passenger is like this of course but you often see a video of a fight or loud argument in public & it’s a carnival ship. Just recently a man with a drink pkg was breaking the rules & getting drinks for everyone around him, they ask him once to stop but he didn’t they approached him again he poured a beer over the stewards head & hit him several times in the face with the bottle causing what one place said would be permanent scars on his face. Sorry for the book I just wanted to give you a heads up. There are a lot of people that love Carnival cruises it’s just not us. My opinion is unless you are a big party person, enjoy entertainment that isn’t an actual show but a singing show that has no basis just singing & is a bit odd, enjoy some unruly & no mannered people that feel rules don’t apply to them, then Carnival is not going to be a enjoyable cruise for you. We enjoy RC, Celebrity & Viking. Have a great cruise whenever & wherever you go next time.

They should have given them a refund between a Bahamas itenerary and what they paid. Then, they need to Fix the Damned Boat! However long it takes will be less of a loss than thousands of irate passengers spreading the word not to sail with them. Also, these cruiselines need to reevaluate their policies and drop the “we can do anything we want because we say so” clause on their contracts. They can ask the airlines how that has been going for them, lately. It is better to reform your own industry than wait for the govt to do it for you.

Most people have known Vista has had engine problems many times in the past and Carnival hasn't gotten to the root cause, so I blame Carnival, and refunds should be offered.

They either need to replace the engines or admit they lied about the engine problems in the first place. Also, they may need to get their business model in order, because if the only way they can pull a decentprofit is to lie and scam customers, then that is a problem! If I ever get to cruise, I'm going Cunards first, only because my destination will be England and I want to make sure I get there.

Hello Don. The contract may say that the cruise line is not subject to legal liability for damages and that may hold up in court. However, the contract has no power over passengers and others to express their dissatisfaction and to warn others of potential mis-treatment. Such knowledge may rightly impact people's decisions on whether or not to cruise and if so on which cruise line.

We can only hope. Carnival needs a serious financial lesson for their actions. Unfortunately people have short memories. The "power of the people" is to take their wallet to another cruise line not associated with Carnival.

There should have been a cash refund of the difference of cruise fares between what they booked and what they got. Then, in addition, there should have been future cruise credit of 100+% of the cost of the cheaper cruise..

We just got off the Aug 24th Vista sailing and our ports were shortened and we got back late to Port Canaveral. Lots of angry people because of missed flights. We had another cruise on Vista scheduled for next May too and we canceled it.

I think it’s time for a Cruiser’ Bill of Rights similar to what the airlines have had to do. I interprete unforeseen as weather, breaking down while on route, outbreaks, terrorism etc. NOT mechanical issues that where know to be an issue even before sailing.

Cruise passengers need protection the same as Flight passengers. It's time for the responsible US Govt agencies to step in and prevent cruise lines from inflicting their arbitrary, punitive, unreasonable, illogical solutions, when they fail to deliver services to passengers as contracted.

With cruising Carnival over 25 years and over 30 cruises, have definitely noticed the difference in attitudes from crew from then till now. Have had a couple of incidents through the years, but now it seems they occur more frequently. The problems for us are not with the employees, like the workers, room stewards, bartenders and etc., it's the ones that take charge, that are too uppity and boss you, that think they are more important, than they are considerate. Talk down to you. The position has gone to their head. I have been voicing Carnival praises all these years, till now. I appreciate being able to go on Carnival and appreciate the ones that have made it the fun and I add, the respectable ship, but it's not just the rude entitled passengers anymore. I was thinking the other day, when we started with Carnival, that these that cruise now won't be able to know the times there were very few problems with anyone and will not have near as an enjoyable time, as we, when there were no stabilizers, no outside theater and all the other amenities on the ships now, just nice, respectable people. Of course it's not just Carnival, but these were our ships we were so proud to invite others as many as 7, to go with us. When people respected people. I hope Carnival will be able to rise above and see respectable is just as important as fun. PS and because someone always says... it is what it is... and that is not so, it's what you make it.

Hello again Don. I wasn't able to finish my post re legal vs. Reputation liability until now. I agree (and am sympathetic to the cruise lines) that they are contractually immune to most legal liability for itinerary change issues. However, if they want to avoid having their reputations destroyed, the wise choice is to treat passengers well and provide decent compensation as needed regardless of what is or is not contractually obligated.

Carnival may want to revisit their policies, I will not cruise with them, I can only cruise every 2 yrs because of cost. I will not take a chance with them. I also understand companies' right to change itineraries but really?

With all the recent problems it`s time to get a passenger bill of rights for cruisers like that of air travelers! It carnival had to cough up more money than they were saving with itinerary changes they might actually honor the planned trip!! I`m not advocating for honoring itineraries when there is severe weather interfering with plans. Of course they could refuse and then be banned from US ports but I`m thinking they will not forego the money they make from US travelers and adhere to the itinerary.

We book for the itinerary and would have been upset over the poor replacements that were offered. I’m sure Carnival was hoping to fix the ship when it got into port but obviously it wasn’t a quick fix. I feel for the passengers on this one. With Carnival selling out on most of their cruises - the cruise line doesn’t have any good options. Good point about the difference in price value!

No way is this acceptable, this is not a "Missed a port due to weather" or a minor deviation - this is a totally different cruise than what was booked. OBC better be at least the difference in fare plus excursions. Future cruise credit if I cancel...and I eat the $600 airfare (and excursions, pre cruise hotel, etc.) that I'm out? I can promise you that I am going to use that future cruise credit. Banning people that complain?? Wow, Carnival has seriously underestimated the impact social media can have on the bottom line. At this rate all they will be selling is 4 day booze cruises and wondering why the families are staying away in droves...

Does no one recall the Norwegian Star debacle back in Jan/Feb cancelling its Antarctica port stop because of engine problems? Thing with that one is they waited until they wee underway at sea before telling everyone. VERY unhappy passengers on that cruise. Norwegian knew, ages before the cruise, that there was a problem, and did nothing to try to fix it, just ordered the ship to “go-slow” quashing any chance of going to Antarctica. It’s not just Carnival. I get that itineraries can change due to unforeseen circs (hello, weather!), but if you know there’s a problem in advance of a sailing, you should have more honour than to wait until after you’ve set sail to tell them.

Best option would be to refund the difference in the cruise price, including taxes, fees etc., Plus an OBC dependent on cabin class and number of people in a cabin. The last cruise I went on there was 5 of us in one cabin. If I knew that I was getting the same OBC that a cabin with 2 people were in, I'd be pretty upset.

Don, with the respect even if they told them two or three days in advance… It's still way too late. You've already paid for nonrefundable tickets. You already have nonrefundable hotel rooms, it's all too late. Carnival Vista needs to be taken out of action until proven, completely sea worthy and reliable. They need to delete the ships itineraries altogether well in advance, take that thing to dry dock as long as it takes to fix it correctly. Quite frankly, I'm sure the network of diehard carnival peeps are telling each other to avoid any cruise on the carnival Vista until further notice. If I were a carnival cruiser, and I'm not at all, I would be social media communicating to stay off that ship until further notice.

I really believe that the contract is unfair to passengers. If the changes are related to weather, unforeseen political unrest, etc, it is very different than your company's ship is malfunctioning. In a case like that passengers should receive more compensation than a little bit of OBC.

100% carnival to blame and they need to do the right thing here. Refund of flights, refund of hotels, refunds of everything spent with carnival plus compensation. Despicable way to treat their customers. Future customers need to remember this is how they treat them.

Carnival should have gave them a full refund of their money. Forget a future cruise credit when you get one of those. It's normally good for one year, so what if you can't sail within the next year? Then you lose out your hard-earned money. No, carnival is a joke. If you can't get your boats fixed, then don't put 'em in service. And while the boat is out of service and if it's going to take 2months then so be it, but don't give it a quick spit and Polish, put some duct tape on it and then put the ship back out so the same thing can happen again.if I'm these people, I would be upset too. And that's you wanting to ban people, if you give them the microphone and they express their feelings, you can't get mad, and you can't ban them. If you do, that's a lawsuit waiting and please believe me. There's gonna be about 200 lawyers jumping on it.

They also adjusted on-board credits for upcoming cruises. We had a booking credit of $500 for our suite…changed to $250 overnight.

The government needs to start cracking down with the cruise line's policies, just like they did the airlines. We need to start from there! I would be totally pissed off if I was going to the ABC islands and I was changed to Nassau and private islands......

While I am a carnival cruiser carnival did those passengers dirty. Even though it's in the cruise contract that they can change ports for unforseen circumstances. They have known about the propulsion issues for a couple weeks now. Carnival should actually needs to refund all those passengers that they did dirty. And no bans for those that spoke their minds.

The Coast Guard needs to go after Carnival. Is Carnival knowingly putting passengers at risk on an unsafe ship if it can’t maintain speed.

Not sure what’s going on with their maintenance, but that’s pretty ridiculous. I could be mixing this up, but I got caught up in the same thing with Vista a few years ago, when some family members and I got canceled because of mechanical issues on the Vista and reschedule to a different cruise ship with a similar itinerary came with an extra thousand dollar price tag. No, they weren’t about to issue any type of discount or price match on another ship in their own fleet. I’m retired in Houston so rescheduling isn’t a big deal, so I got on the Vista a little later and it’s still had problems as we lost power for several hours on one day. Looks like carnival just needs more competition in their niche because they know full well how bad this makes them look, but they just don’t seem to care at all. It seems they’re attitude is, go on a different cruise line. From what I’m hearing, people are starting to do that. Carnivals cheaper prices are just getting too expensive! :-)

All I can say is that this is yet another black mark on Carneval and when cruise ships pull these stunts, it pretty much guarantees that people like myself will choose not to cruise with them. We have no other form of protection other than not entering into their lopsided contracts.

Cash refund is the only proper result. But, as Americans, we are used to getting stiffed on our travel, like by airlines, for example. We need the EU to sort out a proper system of compensation for cruise travel screw ups.

The Vista has a history of propulsion problems . I don't recall problems to that degree with the Horizon or Panorama.

This is a really complicated story. First, Carnival’s stance that they can wait until the passengers arrive to announce a destination change, is abusive and shows no respect for their customers. 2) Carnival then doubles the insult by offering $400 onboard credit. The passengers, absolutely are upset. But why would Carnival send the Captain into this fray? He is the Commander of the ship, and his concerns should be vessel operation, not hotel management or corporate fare structures. Yes, Don, the passengers need to behave appropriately….and they did! The potential for significant damage to the interior of the ship was great, including to plumbing, etc..Sabotage. Carnival…..and all cruise lines, need to take a good hard look at their indifference to customers and recognize that mob unhappiness on Mega ship can not be controlled by a handful of staff.

Most people get to the port many hours before take off. They should have notified them at that time while they were checking in to see if they wanted a refund, OB credit for future credit. Carnival deserves this because it wasn't an act of nature that caused the problem but their own negligence.

Hi Don It is time you realised that travelling for 16 hours to home is quite common these days. Think of flying for 18 hours non stop plus flight to get to this flight and transfer to another location after 18 hour flight. We have to endure 30 hours trip to home on some occasions. Cheers keith

Seems those Carnival ships had a design flaw with the engines. Those ships should only go on short cruises. You can’t trust the propulsion system. 😢

I would have been very disapointed at the itinary change but would have accepted it with proper compensation. 400 is not enough. the expected compensation should have been cruise cost difference(in cash) plus cruise credit and or drink pkg comp. the offer of cruise credit is not a compensation because it has to be spent on the cruise or lost. the cost of each cruise itinary is vastly different southern carribbean vs bahamas. if it was 400 pp per inside cabin and up from there than maybe it might be slightly better compensation. when I have paid 6000 plus for suite and you offer 400 per suite and the cruise itinery price difference is 3000 per suite nope. (example I did not price it out)

my royal caribbean cruise had a similar engine problem years ago. Nobody got a refund but this didn't happen. I hope thiis sends a message to the cruise lines

I was on the Carnival Horizon Aug 23rd - 31st. The best time I had during this cruise was OFF THE SHIP!! I wouldn’t sail with them again if it was free!!!

They obviously knew that the ship was not 100% operational and this type of problem is their own Falt, therefore their cruise contract was null and void. Everybody should be refunded the entire amount.

I think Carnival needed or needs to give those people their full money back since it was Carnival’s fault that they KNEW their ship couldn’t make it to the original destination then out of nowhere made the decision to go somewhere else. I’ve never been on a Cruise but have heard a lot of bad things thet go on with and on Carnival cruise ships and also I feel, if the people knows at least one of their ships has a problem then it should get taken care of looooonnggg before it is ready to deport. Shame on you Carnival and get your act together. These people are paying big bucks to use your Cruise Line and they do deserve to go where the itinerary says they’re to go. We had engine trouble on a NCL cruise, (MY FIRST CRUISE EVER, dec.2016 STAR), i got 100% cash refund, and a 50% credit towards another future cruise,plus i did the 11 day cruise.Now im Diamond level, love NCL, in 2 weeks ill be on another NCL cruise

People need to realize that you are at the mercy of the cruise line once you make your final payment. They can cancel ports, change port times and there is nothing you can do. We have cruised many times and have experienced missed ports and changed port times. This situation is incredibly painful -they changed the entire trip! They should receive a full refund and considerable on board credit. What a shame!

Definitely a cash refund was more appropriate. Giving a cruise credit holds them "captive" to book another cruise to get any "credit". Obviously the benefit of this decision rewards Carnival, not the passengers that were short changed

The compensation they are offering seems inadequate for the ports that they are missing. And as you say, they charge more for a southern Caribbean cruise than a Bahama islands cruise. The fuel to the southern Caribbean alone would be a lot more than the Bahamas.

Wow, I will look into other options when we book our next cruise. I will also look into additional insurance coverage. Carnival should have offered a bit more. Unless these were very cheap accommodations for the passengers, the cruise line should have offered more . They cut the itinerary by two days. That means that they will be saving on food, fuel, wages, and the likelihood that a certain number of people will never take advantage of the $400 credit. I also believe that the company is smart enough to have some kind of insurance coverage for unexpected events.

I have sailed with them 7 times and never have seen any of the crap they talk about in these videos. Things happen on other cruises, too, Carnivals gets a lot of the attention.. I also know several people sailed on Royal and said never again that are returning to Carnival.. To each their own.. I'm 65 and my wife is 63 and we like Carnival fine.. If you want to dress in tuxes and talk about your golf game, Carnival is not for you..
