Carnival Glory strikes Carnival Legend in Cozumel, Mexico

Carnival Cruise Line is assessing damage to two of its ships that collided Friday morning in Cozumel, Mexico.
Videos posted on social media showed the Carnival Glory crashing into the Carnival Legend as it maneuvered to dock.
In response to questions on Twitter, Carnival tweeted that it is assessing the damage to both ships. The company said there has been one minor injury reported from a Carnival Glory guest hurt while they evacuated from the dining room.
Carnival said in a statement that the Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it collided with the Carnival Legend, which was already alongside.

I was at breakfast on the Legend and I remember looking out at the Glory thinking they were really close to us as they were docking. I told my son, they do this stuff all the time, they'd never hit us. Next thing we know the whole ship shudders and our cruise director comes on to announce they bumped us. Lots of crew members were taking photos. You know it's something crazy when most of the crew is snapping pics. They've seen it all, but this was new.

It was blocked off by a makeshift wall from what I understand. I'm sure someone on the Glory posted pictures somewhere.

We were on a NCL ship around this time and we were supposed to go into Cozumel around the same time. We saw Carnival heading into Cozumel after we attempted and we are so glad we didnt dock. We heard the news straight after on our ship and we are so glad that our Captain decided to just head back to sea.

For this incident, the PILOT steers the ship in to the port which means that the pilot did not watch his back and collided with the carnival legend keep in mind that during docking, the captain is not in control of steering or mooring the ship

@@AshleyThompson-to5km i went on it right after the incident happened and its huge. there is a part in the center of the boat, its a cafe, you can walk to the edge of a railing at the top of the boat, there are like 20 stories below you, and you can go to the fancy cafe by walking up glass stairs. its absolutely beautiful and HUGE. enjoy your boat! if you look at the tip of the hull it might still have the dents it did when i went lol. it doesnt affect the boat.

I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often. Most of these Mexican cruise ship destinations are in old harbors, built for traditional, small fishing boats, close to the center of town. It amazes me that you can dock one single cruise ship into some of these harbors and yet in peak season you often see two or three squeezed in. Make no mistake, this is about money. Neither cruise line nor city wants to spend the money on dedicated, new, purpose built, out of town facilities and the Mexican towns want to extract maximum income by dropping the tourists off as close to the city center as possible.

Although it looks sunny it doesnt necessarily mean that there is no wind and since those massive ships are sensitive to the wind (especially when manoeuvring) it played a big factor contributing to this incident. However, an incident or disaster always happens because there are multiple factors involved. But in this case, the wind was definitely an important factor contributing to this incident.

I never heard a loud collision warning horn from either vessel before the crash. Fewer lawyers involved since it was Carnival vs Carnival. Oops, the horn comes about 30 seconds after the collision. Even moving very slowly, 100,000 tons can do a LOT of damage.

I know but its to give an alert that you are close by with this the pilots for the docks also contact the ships radio and etc. Also fun fact when a ship is docked and there are high winds a code is sounded throught the ship to alert the crew of possible collision to pier and etc. Sometimes you have to work on these ships to understand the sounds that are used to different codes. Tbh it may sound like it doesnt make sense to someone from the outside.

I cruised on the Glory last June.Those big windows that got crushed are in the two story Aft dinning room. They would have only been use the lower floor for breakfast service at the time of the accident.
