I had this song running through my head when I got home tonight. It was so persistent I had to look it up - I wanted the original official version and I got it. Nothing sends me right to the heart of the matter like Ms King's songs. I always think how about how, as a songwriter, she had to be encouraged to sing her own songs. Aren't we lucky she did.

I didn't know she had to be encouraged to sing her own songs, but given her Brill background I can see how she felt that way -- in her mind she was the writer not the performer, evidently. However she does have a fine voice, and it adds meaning to the songs.

Pop songs today would never have a 50 second instrumental interlude. Adds so much to the overall feel/mood of the song.

What a sweet year, 1971, was for the incredible Carole King! Tapestry album dominates the #1 spot on Billboard Album Charts, and the MUSIC album follows in the fall of 1971 and spends 3 weeks at #1.

Lost my mom in Sept 2000, this song brings tears.. its so beautiful. I was around 9 when this song came out, my dad had walked out for another woman and we struggled so much..I remember loading coke bottles in my little wagon to sell when we couldnt buy anything to eat..never went hungry and our little dog Mitzi didnt either. We had very little but I believe it kept us closer.. that bond, respect and true love cant be found in a social media upbringing, sad for young today that feel so entitled. Simple things like remembering my mom playing this very song on piano as I sat by here singing along... meant then and means more now than any cool gadget ever will.

Loved this song this I first heard it in the early 70s. The bass and her keyboards are fantastic. Actually, the keyboards remind me of her participation in 'Basketball Jones' by Cheeck & Chong, where I also like George Harrison's guitar contribution....
