Probably one of the most revered and scrutinized brass videos of all time. Though I am somewhat biased, you can not deny its value. I will never get tired of hearing this.

I will say, as cheesy as it may sound, that was probably the BEST moment of my entire season... Playing the shocker louder than I'd ever played and the best I've ever played. Made Matt Harloff tear up a little after that, and it was amazing.

I just don't get where they got the Gb/F chord at 2' in... I mean, I get the So-Do in the tuba and the 'power' of the b6 root Gb chord, and that it CERTAINLY adds to the tension, it's just a crazy choice. Also, they're stupid awesome. So I can dig it.

I don't know what you just said. So I watched the video and imagined myself at an old Catholic cathedral hammering away on the organ. Sounds good to me :-)

Music theory-wise, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In a conventional string concerto this compositional decision would also be the cause of some confusion. Imagine teaching a community church choir how to perform a minor 2-1 suspension. The practical means outweigh the creative necessity of it. In a brass ensemble, they simply throw the button down, blow, and you get the sound you ask for whether you intend to or not. I understand the salience of your confusion, and also recognize the practical scenario that deems such a dissonant suspension applicable, if not necessary given the limitation of the instrumentation.
@t.j.wolfgram276010 жыл бұрын
Jared Hallstrom Well put sir. It's interesting to think about the harmonic setting as it would be realized in different contexts. And bottom line, this pedagogically gets the brass air moving in a connected way and is awesome for the warm up audience. So I'll take it!
@bteske37 жыл бұрын
If you listen to the show they play the full chord sequence at the very end of the opener after the "Iron Man" motif. The chord in question is played in the short impact notes towards the end.

I baggedd pretty hard on Crown brass in a parade video of them doing In The Stone... I said it there and I will say it here... I absolutely LOVE Crown... and THIS is exactly why. THIS is a Jim Ott hornline. THIS is the standard by which ALL hornlines... past AND present... should be judged because in MY humble opinion... THIS may just be the greatest hornline to ever grace our activity.

to paraphrase george lucas, its amazing because its simple. so many other corps try to overcomplicate their warm ups, and they never really get down to the bare tuning. This warmup is just that, which is why crown's hornline is always so damn in tune. Just Awesome.

no words do the cut off at 1:49 and entrance at 1:51 justice
Whoa, what a weird note to have the tubas sit on at 2:01, but then the relieved tension right after is great. Excellent warm-up routine as well, especially the first 3/4 of the vid. The end has a point as well, but come on, it's mostly to get their musical rocks off. And so it does....

@avenged7xguitar Yes they were supposed to hit that note. It's very odd for the tubas to be the dissident part of a chord but that time they were. I almost wanna say its a minor 2nd but I'm a contra player myself so I don't play much other than the 1st or 5th usually lol
