The Carolina Rig is an awesome way to catch big bass! It can be adapted to virtually any fishery if you know what changes to make. From different worms and creature baits, to different hooks and weights, there are a lot of variables to consider. Tim goes in-depth about how and when to fish the Carolina rig and shows all his favorite components in today's video.
Whether you're on a Southern impoundment with bass gathering on ledges or on a small Northern fishery fan casting open water, the Carolina Rig has a place in your arsenal. If you don't know exactly how to set it up it can be incredibly frustrating to cast and even more frustrating to detect a bite. Tim loves fishing the Carolina rig and understands both the benefits and struggles of the technique. He shares some of the modifications and adaptations he uses to consistently catch fish with this presentation.
Below is a breakdown of the equipment discussed in the video. From Tim's favorite components, to budget options, its all there. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see details photos and descriptions of each item.

They eat big worms damn good certain times of year. When it's hot as hell is one time. Another time is any time bass are feeding on big gizzards. Or any bigger then normal baitfish. Those jelly worms work damn good Texas rigged or Carolina rigged. I got a whole big Plano deep 3700 with nothing but ol monsters, one with nothing but big power bait worms in 3 colors, another one with yum mighty worms and manns jelly worms. Purple for the manns and plum for the mighty worms, and another with nothing but strike king bull worms, in my boat at all times. Those big worms work good on a yum pumpkin head shakey head too.

Perfect run down for a c- rig, but you should do an under water video of this presentation. Unless you are using floating plastics with a light wire hooks and no salt ,baits do not float along behind the weight. They drag on the bottom. A lizard has always been a staple for c-rig because the four legs helps it to rise when you drag it then it settles down when you pause. Do the underwater footage and you will learn this too. Thanks!

I think the C-rig is overlooked because a lot of bass anglers see it as an amateur technique just because its a cast and drag rig. You don't have to impart any action to catch fish. Don't get me wrong I use C-rigs all the time in Texas summer. A lot of times its the only thing that will get bit when its over 100 degrees and the water temps are in the 80s-90s. Bass want that easy big meal and here come mr C-rig worm just derppin along the bottom works. Hard to beat a C-rig lizard or brush hog in the spring for pre spawners too

Hey Matt & Tim, I truly appreciate your guys input that you apply into the videos that you make and share with everyone on here; thank you both for all that you do... I do have a question for either Matt or Tim that I hope one of you can help me with, I'm at the point in my life right now to be able to upgrade just bout all of my rods; my question is I am on the shorter side in height roughly 5'8" tall with all of the rod lengths that you both suggest in your vids Can I still get the same performance in accuracy as well in distance with a shorter length of rod like a 6'8" to a 7'3or4" rod length for these tactics and techniques? If not what would be your best recommendation for me since I'm so use to throwing a 6'-6'6"max rod length the last 20years of fishing?

I think the Jelly worms fall into the “dragging” category being that even slowly pulled that auger tail just flicks and kicks. Such a reactive tail for a non-swimming style tail.

Also, I think stainless steel gets overlooked as C-rig weights and that is a shame. They are cheap like lead but much harder if not as dense and work well with a glass bead.

@A C what this guy said. You can flip, pitch, drag a c rig, texas rig, drop shot, shakey head, use them for spinner bait trailer, jig trailer, what ever you want to do, anywhere you want to on any type of structure or cover, once you find the fish, you go through certain baits based on seasonal patterns, or forage the bass are feeding on.

Add a fluke to your list of baits. It's a killer here in TX. One other thing and it may be lake specific but the guides on Lake Fork almost 100% throw bottom contact baits on fluoro, their reasoning with a ton of actual experience is that due to the amount of wood cover in Fork braid dragging over it makes a distinct sound that the fish have become conditioned to. I've been told by them that they will get up to 50% more bites in a given area at a given time with identical bites using fluoro. I know of one guide that throws braid on his frog rod and punching rod only but in both cases it's a reaction bite more than a deliberate bite as on a dragging type bait.

@treyferguson7943
@treyferguson7943 4 жыл бұрын
I use a shorter true medium heavy rod for big worn with 15 pound fluro. In my opinion you'll over work your bait and drag it to fast with a longer rod, and also you don't need a heavy action rod or flipping stick for big worms. Like a jig worm rod works great. I like a 7'3" inch rod for c rigs. And a 6'6" to 7 foot true medium heavy rod for Texas rigs and big shakey heads. I use 15 pound fluro and anywhere from 1/8 ounce to 5/8 ounce tungsten on my Texas rigs and 1/4 to 5/8 ounce on shakey heads. My c rig weights are either 1/2 3/4 or 1 ounce. And I always always always use mono for c rig leaders. You want your bait to fall slowly and look as natural as possible to the fish. Hopefully that helps you some. I'm not Tim or Matt but on my home lake we fish a big worm a big part of the year. It's a deadly technique to catch numbers and big fish. Killer in rocks and brush or laydowns.

What type of pliers do you use?

How would you recommend someone on a kayak and without electronics find deep structure. I want to apply these videos about these types of techniques, but I just don’t know how I would actually figure out where deep structure is.

I would recommend getting even the least expensive graph to find structure in deeper water. Something like the hummingbird pmax or something along those lines maybe cost 100-180 bucks. That said if its not an option you could try watching the bass boats or other kayakers out on water. If you see a boat sitting in one spot for 10-15 minutes or more with no obvious timber or anything chances are they are fishing a hump or brush pile or something that is in deeper water that will hold fish. You could also try topo or contour maps of the lakes you fish. A lot of times the state DNR will install fish structure and will provide maps with gps locations for them. But seriously though think about investing in an inexpensive graph it will save you a lot of time. Hope that helps.

Look on navionics webapp, use google earth and see if there are years with big droughts to see cover and structure and have a big jig, texas rig or carolina rig to use as not only a depth finder, but to figure out what's below. You can also look at the bank and get a guess as to some contour as the land below can be similar to above the water, but not always.

Use the Carolina rig and cover water. Gives you a ton of feedback using 3/4 - 1 oz weight.

What expride model would you use for 1 oz weights on your Carolina rigs? Could you use the 7’11 XH or would something like the 7’7 heavy he a better choice?

I live on a very shallow reservoir named grand lake St Mary’s that’s 7 feet the majority of the main lake, it was hand dug to be a reservoir for a canal so there are no drop offs or ledges. It is so stained that is about 2 inches of visiablilty. How should I go off fishing this in the summer?

I've got some water like that around my way. If the water is normally muddy the fish are adapted to it. Water that muddy generally doesn't have a ton of aquatic grass because less light means less photosynthesis. Algae is another issue but if you can throw lipless cranks, square bills, chatter baits and even spinnerbaits without having to pick grass or algae off of ur bait every time you reel it in. Every one of those baits displace alot of water. They also cover water really well. If there's a ton of grass an algae or your fishing in cover and dont want to snag use soft plastics. There's a ton of soft plastics, stick baits like senkos work anywhere. Craws and creature baits are great too. Strike kings rage tail craw and rage tail menace have crazy movement and you can fish them on a Texas or Carolina rig, a shakey head and you can also use them as trailers on jigs and chatterbaits. There's a bait called a biffle bug made by gene larew thats one of my favorite baits ever. There's a cavity in the bait thats meant for a big glass rattle (that gene larew also makes) so if you think you need extra noise you can just throw a rattle in it. Or stick some foam in it and it will float. VMC makes something called a rugby head that works good with them. 1/8 and or 3/16 should work for you. You can use any soft plastic I just suggest them, I do really well with them. If you do want to use soft plastics, dark colors like black, junebug and dark purple silhouette better then lighter colors. Some people really like white or chartreuse and they work too, I just prefer dark colors. Sorry for the novel, hope it helps.

I basically do this bait fishing for stripers but I don’t peg above the weight again but I showed a buddy this the other day and he had never seen this but since I’ve been watching fishing youtubers for years and years now but you guess rock a Texas rig and you either peg above it or don’t peg it at all. I grew up watching my dad and grandpa so basically when we rubber worm a shoreline you put your weight on then there’s these split shot things we found at bass pro and dicks but they’re clear and see through but you get pliers and pinch it and a hole in the middle opens you feed your line through then that keeps you’re weight away from the hook we’ll pull that and the weight up about 6inches then tie your hook and there you go keeps your weight away from the bait and is kinda like a Carolina rig kinda I guess but yeah when I saw what I real Texas rig was I was like lmao what have I been doing but yeah funny how people learn different things from there family when it comes to fishing. Awesome video though very very informational as always you guys stay killing it

My question is why go do you load your real up with braid first
@treyferguson7943
@treyferguson7943 4 жыл бұрын
2 reasons. You can put some on before you put fluro on for backing so you don't have to use a full spool because its expensive. Or you want to have a braid main line, which allows you more sensitivity, line casts better, lasts longer, back lashes pick out easier, and you can switch leader line depending on situation. Fluro and mono in all pound test can be tied to braid main line with a connection knot of your choice. Allows you to be more versatile. I tried it a bunch of different times with all different techniques but now I only like it for A rigs, texas rigs, topwater and c rigs. Lost too many fish trying it with my other moving baits. Probably should've dropped powers in my rods. Also I just get alot more bites using fluro where I fish. But if i fished where there was alot of aquatic vegetation or muddy water all the time i wouldn't use fluro. Only mono and straight braid.
