Going to a doctor, but been feeling worried about it because my job requires me to be on my feet. Really appreciate this video, definitely brightened my day. Also helped me understand what to ask my doctor and how to get proper care, so thank you!!!

When she said its fatal. Shes not kidding. This injury will change your life. I have been suffering from this injury for 6+ months. I have seen 2 doctors already. Been on a boot forever. Its so annoying when coworkers and friends ask me when im gonna get better. I have stopped going to the gym and lost about 20 lbs. Taping and wearing bigger/wider shoes helped. And inserts also. Im debating whether to get a surgery or not. I have also read that after surgery some foot gets worse. I wish everyone the best of luck if you are suffering from this injury.

If you’ve ever had a sesamoid fracture, and you’re an athlete, fatal is not an over-exaggeration. It can be fatal to your athletic career and that’s what she is referring to. This injury just plain sucks. Hard. Broke mine almost 4 years ago. Played college soccer and was an active triathlete. Haven’t stepped on a soccer field or raced since my injury. Low clinical knowledge of this injury seems common. I completely agree very very slow re-loading of the sesamoid. I was pretty much completely out of commission for almost a year. I used a bone growth stimulator for a year. I’ve been very conservative and can now run 3-5 miles a couple days a week with about level 2-3 pain. I’ve been able to ride the past two years with a thick pad. I’ve also been swimming although swimming seems to cause pain, which seems weird but that’s been my experience. Thanks for all the comments all and thanks to Caroline for this thoughtful video. Has anyone in this thread had a sesamoid excision surgery? That is always in the back of my mind as an option. Just curious if anyone went that route.

Hey, thanks for the comment, really resonate with your thoughts. I'm about a yr out from my injury. What kind of pad are your riding with? I started riding my bike but I don't think it's as safe an option as the stationary bike so I stopped doing that. Looking to eventually get back out there but don't want to risk anything.

My doctor said that aircasts and soft walking boots are a terrible new trend for healing. The bone needs to be completely imbolized in an old school cast or fibreglass or plaster. In an aircast the bone will need doulbe if not triple the healing time.

Hi Caroline. Your story is so similar to mine! Until two months ago, I was very active and ran about 50 miles a week. Then towards the end of a run, I began experiencing foot pain . Instead of getting imaging, I went to a physical therapist who misdiagnosed me with two inflammatory conditions. I went to pt sessions and did the prescribed pt exercises for 6 weeks until the pain went away and I was cleared to run again. But after 2.5 weeks of running, the pain returned, so I went to a doctor for imaging. It turned out that my second metatarsal was fractured and the pt exercises, running and just walking made it much worse. I found your videos on KZbin yesterday and they've been so helpful! I love the exercises and your videos about mindset have been especially helpful! I was extremely depressed about my situation until I started implementing your tips. Thank you so much!

I played basketball from 8yrs old to the time i broke my tibial sesamoid 6yrs ago when i was 29. Went 2 years because of not having insurance before I had it looked at. 1 look at the X-ray the Dr said it had to go. Remember that with having your sesamoid removed you also have to have a bunionectomy to stabilize the toe after. That consists of realigning of the bones in your toe. That means the bones are broken, set and held in place with 2 screws after the sesamoid is removed. So 2 surgeries in 1. My toe stayed swollen and could hardly bend it. Took about a year till i had no pain when walking. Over 2 years before walking felt normal again. Felt like i had no padding underneath my toe. The range of motion of my toe is maybe 70%, no pain tho. When standing my toe doesn't fully lay on the ground. Its not by a great amount but its not the same as it once was. I would only have this surgery as your last resort because if I had the surgery when i was younger it would have definitely limited my performance. After surgery the Dr said when he took it out it pretty much crumbled from lack of blood flow and the amount of time I went with it untreated. If you do opt for surgery make sure the incision is going to be on the top of the foot, not the bottom or the side. Some people complain of pain from those spots after. There wasn't many sesamoid removal stories when i had mine done. The few out there were horror stories. I wouldn't change having the surgery tho, mainly because my foot hurt so bad lol With being on my feet all day at work for up to 10hrs and just from everyday life i dont even notice it. Now if you're younger or a serious athlete i wouldn't have it done. Oh and make sure you go to a good orthopedic surgeon who has done many sesamoid removals. Good luck to anyone dealing with this injury. Its definitely a long process!!

I had in a Junior in college and now I am a sophomore in college. I been in so much pain and I’m giving up and think to do the surgery. I just read your comment and you said not to do the surgery when your younger... I just don’t know what to do I also don’t want a bunion ugh. What do you think I should do? I also have been using this vibration machine and it’s healing but it’s been over a year I been using it.

@@meganennabi2044 if your not playing competitive sports i would do it if it affects your life that bad. Other than not being able to bend my big toe as far back as i used to, I have had no problems. It's been over 4yrs and would do it again if i had to. Make sure u find a surgeon who goes in though the top of your foot and not though the side or bottom. Ive heard stories where people who have done that have had problems with the scar tissue. Sounds like you've tried everything else so surgery is the next option. Took 2 years for me to have absolutely no pain after my surgery. Was kind of sensitive for a while, but now its close to perfectly fine like it was before the injury.

Brandon Hammer Hi, I just realized how my response was difficult to understand, but glad you answered my question. Thank you so much for the advice. I been so nervous about the surgery so I’m glad to hear someone went through it. I am not a athlete in college, but I do want to be able to do things. I still want to be able to run, wear heels , walk to class like little things to enjoy and not be taken away from me at 19. That’s what I’m afraid of. I have constant pain but not to the extreme as it was 2 years ago & I think I’ve just been so use to the pain. However, today though I was walking and it was hurting so much which makes me think that I should just do the surgery. I’ve gotten different advice where some doctors say I’m too young for the surgery because I am at high risk at getting a early on bunion. I feel like especially with corona It’s just like perfect timing to just do it though. How was your post surgery? I know you can’t walk on it for like 2 weeks or so. After that’s done we’re you able to go back to normal besides it being uncomfortable and feeling some normal day to day pain? Or it was a process for it healing and you weren’t able to do certain things? Also I fractured it so it’s on the side of my foot and good thing you told me because one of the doctors I’m seeing told me he was going to remove it from the side. It’s just sucks because I don’t want it when I’m older and unable to do the things I want to do it’s just a hard decision knowing if I should do it now or wait. I appreciate you helping and taking the time to answer me. Thank you again.

@@meganennabi2044 my post surgery went ok. I was in a boot for about a month. Walking barefoot took a while before i had no pain. Once in a while when i put to much pressure on it i would get a sharp pain, but that is completely gone now. I'd say it took about a year to have no sharp pains occasionally. It was never anything to painful when it did happen. A good surgeon will do a bunionectomy when they remove it because removing the sesamoid destabilizes your toe so the bunionectomy fixes that potential problem. Make sure the surgeon that performs it does the bunionectomy along with the sesamoid removal, and goes in through the top of the foot to remove it. If u can find a surgeon that will do both of those I'd recommend doing it. Before my surgery i was nervous because of all the horror stories i read, but i had to take the risk because it was to the point it was hard to even walk. Where i work im on my feet all day long and do a lot of walking. Without having the surgery i would not even be able to work at my current job. My advice to you is look around for a surgeon that will do the things i said. Dont do the surgery till you find 1 that does. Most good surgeons will do the surgery that way. Or at least a good orthopedic surgeon will.

Great advice and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience/expertise. Proper diagnosis is key with a sesamoid fracture. I can speak from experience that misdiagnosis is very common even with an x-ray. A qualified Podiatrist and an MRI can be valuable tools if you have exhausted other avenues. I had a Family Doctor and Radiologist tell me nothing was broke only to find out 2 weeks later that was not accurate. I found vitamin D, Calcium and Magnesium to be beneficial. Essential oils Cypress, Citrus and Frankincense helped reduce my swelling, but swelling stayed for a good 6 weeks. You are a great motivator and enjoyed your chair workouts.

I had a quick onset of foot pain in the ball of my foot and went to a podiatrist. He did an x-ray and told me I had a broken medial sesamoid and put me in a walking boot. Seven weeks later there was no change and he told me I could wear stiff shoes and try dancer pads. At that point I went to an orthopedist. He questioned the x-rays and suggested an MRI. He determined my sesamoid is bipartite--ie developed in two pieces at an early age. NOT broken!. It is sesamoiditis. He recommended the stiffest Hoka shoes, a special carbon fiber plate that you wear under the shoe's insert so you can't bend your toes, and a dancer pad. Be sure to apply the dancer pad correctly! I am also starting PT. I feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel for me. I hope this helps others.

Here’s the problem for us newbies, thank God they caught this diagnosis at my walk in clinic, originally miss-diagnosed as gout 8 days ago, understandably. Looks just like it, and I am a lover of beef and alcohol, so there’s all that. Did all the gout stuff I was supposed to do for a week with no improvement, so they x-rayed my foot this time and could see what the problem was(sesamoid bones being out of whack) sorry to be long-winded, but then all they tell you is get into a podiatrist as soon as you can here is a referral. And leave you with nothing to do, to try to help your situation out while you wait to see the podiatrist. I feel pretty fortunate that it’s only going to be two weeks for me. Meantime, me not fully appreciating how serious this injury is, I’m going out of my way to try to figure out everyway I can to stay on my feet so I can do my delivery job. Not fully understanding that that is the wrong thinking. So thank you for your input I found it very helpful! As I’ve called my employer and told them I won’t be in until I can get this under control, however long that may be. Going to do everything in my power to get back up on my feet again, went to a physical therapist today, so that is a start! Also, and probably more importantly, not trying to figure out how I can cheat my foot🤠 just fully understanding that I need to stay off it for a while!

Do you not bend your big toe up and down that irritates the sesamoid bone. Stay off your feet, use crutches or a knee scooter and if you have to sit all day try to do some hobbies or sit down exercises. You will need a contrast MRI which is different than a regular MRI is when I put dye in your blood call and make sure you ask for that. An x-ray doesn't show as much but it's not harmful to get that as well of course. LOL all the best to you

Love your positive energy!! I just went through a sesamoid fracture last year and it was very rough. I fractured it because of Irish dancing and it was painful and I had to miss my lacrosse season bc of being in a boot for about six weeks. When I got out of my boot my ankle was very weak and I went back to dance and lacrosse and I fractured my growth plate because of it and was in another boot for another 8 weeks. Now it is pretty much 9 months later and I’ve been dancing nonstop and lacrosse is coming up in a couple weeks and my sesamoid has began to hurt again so I am worried. I feel like it can’t be broken though because I’ve been able to dance on it ... it just hurts. 😳😳😳

I'm struggling so much on this... I found out that I have a fracture in the sesamoide one year after the trauma, the bone will never get whole again, the only positive thing is that it just has a big crack but it's not splintered but sesamoiditis is always holding me back

I found out that I had sesamoiditis two months ago. No fracture was found, whew! I taped and used some dancer's pads on my foot which helped a lot! Four weeks later after the pain and swelling was gone, it started hurting again yesterday! It is so frustrating indeed. I like going to the gym every day, but I guess like you've said listen to your body. I know I will get better, I just need to take it easy. That's for the great video!

I have been dealing with a stress fracture in one of my sesamoid bones. This has been going on for almost two years. We tried a boot (I was in that for 6 months), I was then put in a walking cast for 4 weeks, and now a year later I am in another cast (going on my 5th and final week in) also non-weight bearing. This has been extremely difficult for me because I am on my University's dance team. I wish I would have found your videos at the beginning because I have been going crazy not dancing or working out.

I got a sesamoiditis in one foot. I was hopping on my good foot to get to my crutches and got it in my other. 2 years had gone by and I was able to do work in the yard a little and my pain was low. Then the snow 🧊❄⛄came and I went out in it for 4 hours (stood for one hour in Hoka shoes and orthotics, then by a fire for the rest). Came home and put my foot in hot water to warm it. The next day my sesamoiditis pain was back in both feet!!! Noooooo. I am back to non weight-bearing on both feet.

Hey Caroline! Apologies in advance for this epically long message but I'm kind of at a loss and am hoping you might have some insight! So I started feeling pain in the ball of my foot a few months ago to the point where i couldn't walk on it. I went to an orthopedic dr and he did an x-ray and he told me he thougt it was sesamoiditis... i got a boot but i only wore it for less than 2 weeks because the pain went away. Now I've been feeling totally fine majority of the time but every once in a while I will step on my foot or move it the wrong way and get a super sharp pain in the ball of my foot. It will get slightly sore when I hike or am super active on it but it typically calms down within a matter of minutes. I wasn't an avid runner before i got this injury but it's driving me crazy that I can't run. It's my favorite type of workout. I'm not sure what to do as most of the time my foot feels100% fine and normal but I'm nervous if I start running again I will do more damage to it? It doesnt feel like it's gotten any better or worse in literally 3 months. Do you think I still need to off load it even though I have zero pain?

Hi Caroline, thank you for sharing your experience. I broke one of my sesamoids three weeks ago. The doctor recommended rest, I started the rest a week ago, and do not put your foot down. I use crutches, however I feel that during the day I make some involuntary movements in the foot and I am afraid they will influence the recovery. Shouldn't the doctor have immobilized the bandaged foot or recommended the use of an immobilizing boot? Thanks:) I was so happy to find your channel;)

I never really had pain, but since hiking/running in some new shoes 6 weeks ago I have this feeling on the medial side which kinda feels like there's a pebble stuck under my ball of foot. Is this sesamoiditis? I have only one pair of shoes left (I down own dozens of shoes) that I can still comfortably wear. Riding a bike and putting pressure on the pedal also causes discomfort. But at the same time walking barefoot causes no discomfort. I have a doctor's appointment scheduled, but wondering if this makes actually sense that it is Sesamoiditis?

I couldn’t find anything like this for a long time and need to loose quite a lot of weight to help my ankle and for the surgery. I am new to Utube and don’t know how to navigate very well. I’m a track athlete and i put all my weight on the ball of the foot while running. Taking in mind that the track I practice on is too hard, i had some irritation on my foot two months ago. To my bad luck, I had to compete in some races and, therefore, I ended up making the situation worse. After all that I went to a podiatrist, he diagnosed a sesamoiditis, prescribed some anti inflammatories and gave me orthotics. Because I am stupid though, I went on vacation an i obviously strained my foot more there. Now i started to feel the same pain on my other foot too, it was my initiative to start anti inflammatories again and, although I rest for a week or so, put ice etc I see now progress... I really want to be able to run again as soon as possible... Do u have any advice? Should I go to physiotherapy to have massages? Should i in some way tape it? I feel devastated and hopeless... I would be really grateful if you replied!

Sports are my life and I have been getting cortisone shots for 3 years. They help for about 2-3 months at a time. My next move is to try orthotics but am scared I will be wasting money and they won’t do the job. But the next step after that would be surgery to remove the injured sesamoid but that means I am not able to play sports. So I was wondering if u thought orthotics was really worth it
