I don't think it's correct to put it like this. Pirogova's suicide was one of the things that inspired Tolstoy to write/that he used in his writing, but she was not real-life Karenina.

I read Anna Karenina earlier this year. Never have I ever found myself changing my opinions about a character within the space of a few pages. If a book can do that, perhaps we can be more open minded about the people we come across in real life? Part 8 was mind blowing. I found myself exclaiming out loud as Tolstoy, via Levin, put into words my own thoughts...or had they been put there by Tolstoy during the previous 700 pages?!!

Anna Karenina has been on my TBR list for a very long time. I’m going to start reading it in April. I’m glad you got over being intimidated by the big books and read it. I just finished Les Miserables and LOVED it. I also read The Count of Monte Cristo a few years ago so big books doesn’t bother me. War and Peace is also on my TBR list this year. I also am excited to read Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. My reading list this year is HUGE!!

I have just recently finished Anna Karenina. What a story! I agree with you about the characters. They actually feel like people I know, not just figures Ive read about. I'm older and have experienced many of the life events in the book and Tolstoy describes these all in a heart-wrenchingly beautiful way that I deeply relate to. This novel is everything!

I feel you! It was one of my first Russian classics as well. I'm currently rereading it and Tolstoy's passages on art and death are the best in my opinion.I started noticing some flaws due to my habit of overanalyzing things, but that's ok. I'm not a Levin fan anymore, though I empathized with him 6 years ago. I'm less forgiving of him being a 19th century man and last year I learned too much about Tolstoy's life to admire him. He wasn't the man I wanted him to be. Oh well... I still enjoyed most of his works. One of my favorite ones was his Confession, oddly enough considering the previous paragraph. One of the reasons some people compare Tolstoy and Dostoevsky is that both of them were not afraid to ask the most important questions and to actually look for the answers instead of accepting the ones offered by others. You artwork is stunning, by the way!

I love her dialogue. The social engagement is on such a higher level than what is heard today. Nobody uses the filler word “like” or the repetitive words in vogue at any given time. Many of her characters possess a higher vocabulary so are able to not only be more clear but far wittier.

It's probably my favorite adaptation! I recently re-watched it and I fell in love with it once again. The first time I focused more on Anna's storyline, but now I noticed how great were Karenin, Oblonsky. There were so many details and specific changes from the novel that I missed the first time.

The next book I would Definately reccomend you to read is a French classic , The count of Monte Cristo written by Alexandre Dumas in the 1860’s. It’s a 1200 page book. Dumas was actually also a close friend of Victor Hugo and they worked together on a lot of projects even hiding out together around the time of the French Revolution. Defo worth a read

I reread Anna Karenina this month and I was surprised at how different my reaction to it was this time around. I read it first as a teenager and really romanticized Anna’s love story 😬- definitely did not read it that way this time. I love to see the joy in your face as you describe the character of "Levin" in ANNA KARENINA. That is the way I felt long ago when reading Salinger's portrait of "Franny Glass" in his FRANNY & ZOOEY novel. Of course, It doesn't rise to the level of Classic, but Salinger's writing creates a wonderful sense of intimacy and affection around his characters. As far as Classics go, there's nothing to match Herman Melville's masterpiece MOBY DICK!
