Yep, 67 tomorrow and an old Hippie and metal head but Karen Carpenter has made me cry for 50+ years now. The most affecting voice I have ever heard, it goes into your soul and touches you in ways like no other. She does to me with her voice what David Gilmour of Pink Floyd does to me on guitar. These people are other worldly musical beings that will never be forgotten. ♩

I'm 48 and have been ALONE for a handful of years in my one bedroom apt with my dog. I've been sooo hurt and disappointed over and over again. I used to be devastated by this. But now, I'm just resigned. This song was so accurate for me. And to respond to Sue in the comment above me... I'm told that I'm very good looking and I am pretty confident in many areas of my life. So, I don't think good looking and confident means you're exempt from this being your theme song. 😕

Musically that song was a pioneer -- it was the first time a 'soft rock / ballad' had a distorted guitar part. Fantastic guitarist Tony Peluso.

Incredibke though Karen's voice was, let's not forget her brother Richard who not only arranged the songs, wrote the harmony lines and joined her on the unsurpassed vocals. RIP Angel. I have been listening to this song for 50 years and am still typing through tears at the sounds. Thanks for uploading this.

Karen had the most beautiful smooth voice ever. She rarely "belted" out songs but rather, sang just above a whisper. Her brother Richard, was himself, an accomplished composer and music director. Together, their harmonies rocked the 70's, and early 80's. Before Karen was known for her vocals, she was already considered one of America's most talented drummers! I was so blessed to have grown up with their music!

I remember hearing this song as a kid and thinking, it's just a song-- this beautiful woman with a gorgeous voice isn't singing this about herself. Then she died, at only 32. Now... It is very sad to listen to. You never have to hide or apologize for your tears, sweetheart. I wish more men would show us more of their emotions-- always fighting them back, gulping them down, is terrible for human beings, male and female. Thank you for doing this one, and for letting your very appropriate feelings show.

This is what is considered to be the very first "power ballad" ever. Never before had there been the soaring fuzz guitar on a love song prior the this track. The Carpenters even received some hate mail over this song. Very groundbreaking for its time.

Tony Peluso was the guitarist. I was Richard's idea to have a fuzz guitar solo, but Tony came up with the solo arrangement. The rest is wonderful history...

Karen was a beautiful person, with heart full of love and spirit, unfortunately, she suffered some horrible depression, and passed away from ANOREXIA - NERVOSA, a terrible, disease that was not understood in the medical field in the day. Miss you KAREN.

In a way, this is a good description of my life to date, though I don't have anything like the same problems that Karen had. All I am is short and fat and introverted; in a part of the country where none of that is in any way acceptable. So, this song really kind of hits home for me, even if a master vocalist like Karen hadn't been the one to sing it.

It is sad, very sad. Even sadder is this is how her life was, she was never happy, even after she got married she wasn't really happy and she died shortly after. All the talent in the world she had meant nothing to her in the end. To me that's the saddest of all. RIP Karen.

The Carpenters were my favorites because of her beautiful voice, the incredible harmonies, music arrangements and perfect songs for her voice. If it is any consolation this album “A Song For You” was early on in their career. If you like vinyl it’s a must have. The mood of the album is a bit melancholy and mature in themes. This song is important tho because the structure is pure power rock ballad in a “soft” song.

Exactly. It was a big deal. Controversial..At that time, it was thought by "introducing this element" it would change their image. To "Hard rock"That was business side. But these people had made millions already and were followed internationally- especially Japan. What many people don't get is that these people were serious musicians in their own right., especially Richard. Tons of talent and training. These people are accomplished players . They knew behind the scenes editing, dubbing, tracking. Herb Alpert didn't screw them either.

Yes, it’s sad for all of us who don’t have much luck in that department. Karen was only 32 when she passed and being that young she probably would have found the love she desperately wanted. I’ve seen documentaries that seem to indicate that she was kind of marginalized by her Mother in favor of Richard who was the golden boy in her eyes. Some of these issues she had to deal with were obviously deep seated and ultimately manifested in destructive ways. It’s just so sad.

What you don't realize until you really listen to this song is the incredible breath control Karen had. Listen to the lyrics she is singing... they just go on and on and on without a pause, without a chance to grab a breath. Unbelievable! Very few singers of any generation could've pulled it off. And she makes it sound effortless. Try singing along with her... you'll see what I'm talking about...
