I was in the front row of the Ryman Auditorium balcony at the taping of this Johnny Cash Show segment. Karen’s matchless voice in that hallowed hall was a sensory overload. We were delighted when it was announced that there was a glitch in the audio and they’d have to sing Rainy Days again. The first time any of us had heard that timeless gem. Unforgettable. ♥️🎶🌹

@@madman37115 Yes, the carpenters never sang fully live. It wouldn't be practical to replicate live the extreme levels of layered harmonies they built into all their songs. Could they have done it? Sure, but it wouldn't make much sense to do so.

@Dbo83 it’s not live. But think what you like The opening close to you was live And maybe the other songs were too I don’t know as I’ve not heard the whole concert - but RD&M was NOT live There’s only one female singer Karen Yet if you listen to the background vocals have her voice doubled even tripled harmonizing. Also, note the other big band instruments being played yet are missing from the stage (ie ghost played instruments). There are many different studio versions in the archives And probably dozens more never released or heard by the public Listen to all the backing vocals Then listen to all their other performances The difference is they have other band members backing hence different voices which many people have stated in other videos they don’t like because they want the original sound of rich and Karen only (Which to be is ludicrous but hey we all have our own opinions so whatever. Listen to the album if you want to hear a replica of the studio version ) A lot of casual listeners ( those who don’t play an instrument or study music cant often tell the difference between live and studio). You need to listen catefully
@@Samscoinsandheavymetal Some parts of this were pre-recorded (instruments, backing vocals) but Karen's voice is LIVE in this performance. There are several notes in which she sings that differ from the studio version. Subtle, but they are there. The fact is that she was such a good singer that it's hard to tell if it's live or recorded, so you have to hear the slightest difference to know.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Shame they used to mime so much on those shows. I know they did in those days, but that incredible live snippet from Close to You shows just how perfect her voice was. Incredible tone, timbre and resonance. She could have sung Rainy Days live just as easily and matched the studio vocal if not bettered it. I wonder what she felt about miming?
@mattn65914 жыл бұрын
I think she actually might be singing, it does sound very close, but there are differences between the recorded version and this one. I think they are using some of the recording obviously for the backing instruments. But the drums at least I am pretty sure she is playing here, its different from the recording.
@6260754 жыл бұрын
The Close to You intro is definitely sung live. I can just tell - it is styled in the same was as the short piece they did to open the singles 1969 -1973, but without the vibraphone. Not sure about Rainy Days. It sounds mimed to me, but still wonderful to see.
