“Sincerity, simplicity, and purity of sound.” So true! Their hits bracketed my entire K-12 years. I wore the grooves out on my babysitter’s 45 of “Close to you.” “Top of the world” was my favorite song during my 2nd grade roller skating party. We’ve only just begun” was our senior class song. My freshman roommate in college had anorexia. Karen’s death hit us both very hard, but it woke her up and saved her life. My daughters, both millennials, love their music and so wish there were artists like them today.

@@papadwarf6762 …About the dress… According to a documentary, when Karen saw herself in this dress on this show, she was upset about the fat on her waist. (It wasn’t a lot of fat, but she had an ideal and fairly thin figure from 17 until this time.) This feeling of being overweight started her eating disorder. To me, Karen was so beautiful and her sweet charm completely melts my heart. So it’s sad for me to say these words about her weight and her eventual demise. If I could have been her friend I would have helped her. Anyway, as their fame began they toured around the world doing extreme numbers of concerts. They were very ambitious, and worked every day which left absolutely no time for a normal life. They needed to take time for stress relief, but they kept working and life unraveled.

It's been repeatedly said that Karen sounded like an angel. Granted, she had superhuman vocal technique and ability but her voice possessed the most human quality ever put on record: warm, full and resonant. It seemed she was right there beside you - inside your head, close to your heart, soul deep. A true living comforting entity coming thru those cold speakers . She wove a deep sense of intimacy and an enduring connection that no vocalist could replicate - then or since.

Karen's voice was reeeeally low alto. Virtually every woman who sings down that low has a smokey, husky, almost manish aggressiveness in their singing. Somehow Karen was able to sing with a rich, velvety chest voice while maintaining an almost impossible lightness that made it sound like she was singing in a high register rather than low, all the while with unspeakably perfect phrasing, breath control and matchless even tone. Utterly incredible singing.

@@royalmason1539 ---Completely different style's, and their voices are still developing. They use a opera style, whitch a lot of young singers do. I think they are great singers, & will only get better, but Karen's adult voice is very uniek, she sings in a key that is very difficult for a woman's voice.

Millions of people love the Carpenters, you shouldn't have felt embarrassed. I'm sure the people that teased you, also liked them but were embarrassed to admit it too, which is stupid. Who's to say what is cool and what is lame? No one can deny the Carpenters are really talented. The Carpenters are definitely on the soft side, but I like soft music.

@welch shaman, they were the first concert I saw, in 1973 when I was twelve. My mom's friend's daughter took me -- she was 16. I'm sure someone paid her to do it because I could tell she really thought it was uncool, LOL. But I had a great time. When I was nine I saved up my allowance to buy the Close To You album, and it went on from there.

I was a freshman in college, when I first heard Karen Carpenter sing “Close To You” over an FM station on the radio. I thought, what a beautiful voice this young woman has. Who is she? If Ms. Carpenter were still here today, I believe she would have already been a recipient of both the Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to American music and culture.. And, as great as Ms. Carpenter’s extensive musical talents were, she was also a very warm and wonderful person, who left this world much too soon.
