Thank you so much. I was languishing with a noisy hydraulic on my rowing machine. I had tried 3-in-1 oil and didn’t try anything else when that didn’t work. After watching this, I took some silicone treadmill lubricant I had and OMG the noise is finally gone. THANK YOU!

It's important to remove excess grease after you run the hatch open and closed a few times. This will prevent dirt and dust buildup, which may lead to seal failure on the strut. Nice video.

FFS... THANK YOU! I bought a used car recently and managed to eliminate all door squeaks with a little grease except on the damned hatch. Lubed the bejeesus out of it as you said but no dice. Never would've guessed it was the struts themselves. Tried some lithium grease on mine, seems to work fine. Finally SILENCE! I know I will have to eventually replace them but so far they are working fine, smooth and strong, except for the ungodly screaching somewhere halfway down and up. Thank you for the suggestion, been scratching my head for a month now on this.

My struts were actually grabbing and making a loud clunking noise. I found your video and used bulb grease because that's what I had handy. I only had to use a pea sized amount and wiped off the excess after I lifted and dropped it a few times, there was a lot of black crud on it. Clean is better, so dirt doesn't wear down the seal. Quiet and easy going now. Thanks!

two people - one closes to make the squeak - the other feels suspected parts with their fingers - got to be a hinge or a gas strut - there are no other moving parts - sometimes struts can fail internally - hope this helps - Cheers from Canada!

Some types of oil, if they manage to get onto the gas shock shaft, will cause all hell to break loose, and the gas shock will become a squeaky screaming demon. First, you have to remove as much of the oil as possible. After that, to fix the problem, even rubbing a wax candle on the shaft will do the trick. The wax stops the rubber seal in the gas shock from rubbing up against the metal shaft in a manner that creates the annoying sounds. That costs you pretty well nothing since just about everybody has a wax candle around somewhere.
