What. A. Hero. My Santa Fe has had rattling front pads for years. I usually use lots of copper grease but that washes off after a short while. Took the pads off today, bent those tabs in a bit and put everything back together. No rattles. No clonks. No more getting annoyed over rough roads. Thank you very much, from the UK.

I think it's the shims and the lack of grease on the back of the pad. They have a special grease that is included for the back of the pads. If you don't use it (or your installer kept it for himself/herself) then it makes this clunking sound. Also, that grease can dry up and then you get a clunking, too.

I replaced the caliper pad retaining springs which fixed the clicking on my calipers, different to yours by looks of it. The springs go weak over time which causes the outboard pad to move back and forth making the annoying clicking sound.

Like many here I've been fixing all kinds trying to get to the cause of this very frustrating clicking/tapping. It exactly matches the sound I'm hearing as I drive and it stops when I apply the brakes. Sometimes I can go for hours and then it starts. Sometime only very subtle and other times very loud but very intimitant. I'll try this as I think you could well be on to something.

Not a question, but a statement for anyone in a similar situation: I have a 2013 BMW and I just got my rotors turned because my rear brake pads had gone out and my wear sensor had been severed a while ago (without my knowledge). So one of the pads was ruining one of the rotors and I decided to take care of all of them to make sure they were fine. When I was putting my brakes back on it's possible I messed up the clips holding my brakes in place and they're just slightly bent. I was mostly worried about this being a problem for braking but I'm glad it's not too serious and that I can DIY fix this.

On most rav 4's of this era, there are supposed to be additional spring clips that attatch to the top and bottom of each pad to prevent the movement. If your new pads dont have them when doing your brakes, you may have to transfer the old clips to the new pads

I work on Toyota's and most of the brake pads on them come with a little metal clip that goes on the "ears" of the pads that work as a spring and a squealer. It basically pre-loads the pads so they don't move and cause that click, don't know if other manufactures have that but yeah a lot of the time people forget to put them on or lose them by accident during a brake job because they like to fly when you remove them lol

Not sure this is also an issue, but I purchased new front rotors for my 2003 Lexus ES300. After I installed them, I could hear a click whenever I applied my brakes. Initially, I thought the pads were moving. However, I placed my phone under the car (up on jack stands) and recorded the wheel. It turned out that the stud holes in the rotors were significantly larger than the studs. When the brakes are applied the rotors would stop first and the studs would then click against the rotor stud holes. No amount of lug tightening would get rid of it. Holes were just too big. Parts supplier said rotors are OEM, which I do not believe. Tolerances are not there.

However, I didn’t check the other side… It is strange that the holes on the rotors don’t center onto the wheel studs .

Thx. Next time I could let you borrow some pliers for those mounts & shims😁also, sometimes there's a problem when both sides of caliper aren't engaged as likely aware some attention to cylinder along with guide pins & bushing getting clean & lube. There are some quieting methods using a cmpd that is different consistency & properties than greases which seems to dampen noise when correctly applied, that's idea but haven't used when shims adjusted should work.

Hi, I have a 2014 mustang gt. I been having several issues for the mast 4 months. For starters, I had gone like 3 new rotors and pads and don’t seem to stop the squealing and now every time I break I hear a big click noise by the passenger wheel. Took it to a ford shop and they can’t find the issue. They said suspension is fine and control arms are fine. Any idea what it can be? Thanks in advance.

Jose - this may sound wrong to you but you're a victim of stupid mechanics even though its a Ford dealer who should know their cars better than anyone - they often don't. Hello. I have a 2007 Hunchback Toyota Yaris that is doing that on the rear wheel. Now, as far as mechanics have told me, Yaris has no rear wheel anti rattle clips/shams (or not like the ones on the video. they are more like a wire, which I have). The pad moves left and right a bit and it's causing some noise. What can I do to stop it?

I had the same problem with my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I removed the calipers and applied AGS Brake lubricant on both edges of my front brake pads. I have no noise after doing so. Easily avoid problems like this by purchasing OEM parts for your vehicle. The aftermarket pads that claim to fit my Jeep do not fit like OEM pads would. Hope this helps someone save some cash

The sound was so feeble at the beginning (at the time of purchase) but now the intensity of the sound increased. It become louder. There is no sound while applying the brake..this tuk noise is only at the time of releasing brake. I treid contacting the service center (since it is under warranty) but they are saying there is nothing to worry and often downplays the issue. My car doesn't have the inner shims, it has an outter antirattle spring/clip. All 4 outer pads act like they are lose. Even after replacing front brakes, rotors, and anti-rattle clips the noise persists. This is causing wear on all 4 caliper brackets.
