I'm going to be very blunt. I'm an old retired peace officer with a few on duty shootings during my career. I was never "relieved" of my weapon after a shooting. The PD knew what I carried and it was their issue ammo used. But a citizen defending himself? Their weapon was always taken as "evidence ", which I always thought was ludicrous! In 1984, a member of our local gun club, was involved in shooting one of two armed suspects that were attempting to rob his pharmacy. He shot one, and we caught the other shortly afterwards. A detective took the revolver from my friend. I immediately went to my unit and came back in, handing my friend my spare S&W mod 19 snubnose and two speedloaders. The detective started to object when the Lt. on the scene told him don't push it, you won't win this. To this day, I've never understood why an honest citizen is deprived of his rights and property when he defends himself or others. And today, that same honest citizen is treated worse than a criminal for doing the right thing! It's not only wrong, it's downright un-American! This country needs some serious attention in putting things right. All politics and no justice.

The Thursday night before the show, a police officer knocked on his motel room door and asked him to step outside and go to his truck and trailer. The officer said there was a warrant for the owner of the truck out of Florida. The officer arrested my friend and confiscated his truck and trailer with 30 weapons and several thousand dollars in cash. Turns out the warrant was a "clerical error," but it took 6 months to get an order to return firearms and cash. The cash was returned in whole, but half the firearms were missing from the evidence lockup! Turns out police officers had been stealing weapons and selling them. At least two were caught on video at a pawn shop. I lost both weapons. I never heard if they were prosecuted. Live and learn.

The second the intruder was shot once by a 9mm and died in the house. Both times the homeowner was questioned by police. He answered their questions without a lawyer. He was not arrested or charged. I've seen others carry massive, heavy .45s or 10mm (for stopping power) when it's too much gun for the person shooting it & the recoil about knocks them over. Again, not great accuracy. If you don't trust your gun to go bang when you pull the trigger every single time, then you are gambling with your life. If you carry an inaccurate gun then you are gambling that you will actually shoot the right person, and not an innocent person instead, or that you will miss the right person and your chance at defending yourself. As the saying has always said, carry what you trust and can shoot well; however, probably don't carry a priceless artifact that can never be replaced, save that for a place of respect, not used as a tool.

You're right on point. Don't carry an inexpensive handgun because it's cheap... carry it because it works for you. I carry the best item I can, accepting that if I'm involved in an incident it might languish in an evidence room - or may not given where I live. I was involved in an incident in the past before working in law enforcement and had my firearm returned months later in a paper bag even though I never fired a shot. Small potatoes compared to everything else that went on.

As a retired LEO I get asked a lot what is a good carry gun that doesn't cost a fortune, and I tell people if they can't afford a good NEW gun not to be afraid to look around for a used gun. Myself, I often carry nothing more than a Smith & Wesson J frame .38 that I got 3-4 years back for about $250 because it was used and is an older gun from the 70's but it works perfectly fine. Yes, spend good money on a handgun, learn to shoot it and shoot it well and to go along with the legal stuff, read all the self defense laws in your state so that you can get a step ahead in case something happens if you have to use that gun.

The value of my EDC has never even been a consideration. Accuracy, functional reliability, and how well I shoot with it are the only factors that matter to me. I carry to preserve my life and, if necessary, the lives of others. You can't put a price tag on that.

Pure and simple, very wise advice. I agree. How much is your life worth? It's not like a situation like that happens often. Hopefully never, and most likely so. But when it does, you want something reliable and something you train and qualify with. How much is your life, your family's life or innocent 3rd party's life worth? It's not like you won't get your piece back once the situation has cleared.

Inexpensive guns are more important to achieving the societal goal “…that every man be armed.” But if I have to defend myself with a $4,000 gun, that price is small potatoes compared to what I’ll spend staying out of jail. I’ll carry what works for me, and what I can work effectively. Wise words, Hickok.👍

I really doubt a $4000 firearm is going to be anymore lethal than a $500 firearm. Spend what you want on it but I see no need to pay $4000 to find a reliable firearm most in the $4000 range are safe queens that people pull out to show off not carry for EDC.

@@mrelectron6220 No, my MR73 was not necessary. It was a choice, because I wanted a “forever K-frame.”. But it is a very functional arm (ask GIGN and a number of dead terrorists). I’m just saying that if it was what I had on the day I needed to defend myself, the $4,400 and change I sent Bud’s for the gun would be of little import. The amount going to legal fees would most likely be vastly greater.

I agree with part of what you’re saying, I usually agree with much of your logic as we are close in age. In the mid 80’s I had a firearm taken from me by the police. In California at the time being in possession of a gun ( right or wrong) had me detained for 72 hours and required to participate as part of a photo lineup. Upon my release I asked for my firearm and I can still hear them laughing. I asked if I had a right to have my gun returned and they explained that in order for that to happen, I would have to hire an attorney to petition the court for the release of the gun. The officer explained that they really didn’t like giving guns back as every gun they got off the streets was a good thing and they purposely make it expensive and time consuming. I’m a firearms lover and collector, I also carry concealed. This is the only reason I own a polymer micro 9 that I lovingly refer to as my “ throw away “ I know that for any reason I should become separated from my firearm, at least it ain’t one of my custom 1911’s. I feel a lot better with my prized possessions safely tucked away in my safe and not exposed to things like theft, physical damage or confiscation, that’s really all of those plastic guns (coming from a Fudd)😂 Kinda like disposable lighters and a real Zippo. One you don’t mind losing the other has your initials engraved on it. Really enjoy your content as always I think maybe I haven’t agreed with you 100% , then again when have you ever known a discussion about firearms ever being anything but subjective.

I understand the sentiment of not wanting to lose a firearm to the legal system, so you probably don't want to carry Grandpa's pistol that you inherited. That said, if you find yourself in a Stuff-Hits-The-Fan situation, you don't want to worry about "You know, this thing stovepipes every third shot or so". Fortunately, there are plenty of "value" guns in today's market that provide reliability at an affordable price so you don't have to "cheap out" with your or your loved ones safety.

If the shoot is justified and or you are found innocent in most States they have to give it back.. If they arrest you and you are released on bail they won't allow you to have any guns till after the trial which could take a couple years.. I knew a guy in this situation that the judge ordered all his weapons confiscated so they took his entire $30k collection including knives, swords and black powder scale model canon.. Just sick because they fabricated a lesser charge and the jury convicted him so he never got anything back thus forfeiting all that monetary value..

LEO for 45 years. Firearms Instructor for 35 of those. I have always advised everyone to carry an affordable, proven, reliable gun and practice with it often. I have friends that belong to what we call “ the gun of the month club”. They always want the latest whiz-bang booolit slinger on the market. A bunch of these folks have their “summertime EDC gun” their “wintertime EDC gun” their church gun (often kept in a hollowed out bible) their “BBQ gun” (those are the ones with the fancy tooled belt and holsters). And often times, each of these guns is a different make and model. Many years ago I decided that I would always carry the same gun. After a time it became apparent that it would be a Glock. Many factors were considered with the overriding theme being all Glocks handle the same way. They are as accurate as the person holding them is, concealable, very reliable, affordable and almost indestructible. The indestructible part references the fact that I carry one in my waistband every day, year round. Sweat on it, drag it thru the weeds or mud, it does not care and will go bang every single time. I have never considered Glocks to be a downgrade. Having said this, understand one thing…..if your firearm is collected as “evidence”, it WILL be stored in a bag, sitting in a locker, still covered in whatever “fluids” and “other materials” that it may have been subjected to during the incident. We will NOT clean it or knowingly change its condition in any manner. It will remain in that condition for as long as it takes for whatever legal process to get finished. If a grand jury issues a no-bill, you could get in weeks or months. The finding of a true-bill means it could sit in that locker for years till that trial process is completed. So, if you wanna spend thousands of dollars on a carry gun, knock yourself out…..just understand what will likely happen if (God forbid) you ever have to use it. After all it’s your money. But for those that have followed my advice. We will hand over our “evidence” gun….and then go home and take its twin out of the safe and continue with our lives. 🫡

Great advice! My first carry gun a couple years ago was the Hi-Point C9...not because I was being cheap, but because I was inexperienced and just wanted to start carrying without spending a bunch of money (and the store owner told me it's a good one). A couple months later I learned more and "upgraded" to the basic Taurus GX4, which I still carry and practice with today. If either ever ends up in a police locker, I could care less because that means I'm still alive, and that's the whole point of carrying a gun. My next carry gun will be another GX4, but with a red dot optic and light...been practicing lately with the tritium sights at night and these old eyes could really use a good red dot and light (have both on my rifle and the difference is amazing).

Thanks for all the good advice provided over the years - it's better to learn from the experience of others, than by making the mistakes yourself. When I was a much younger man, people called cheap guns Saturday Night Specials. Most were cheaply made, small caliber revolvers. I enjoy carrying a small Sig P365 in an Alabama Holster in my pant's pocket. The weapon is actually a little smaller than I care for, but it is reliable, which I believe should be a major concern for anyone carrying a firearm. The price was right too! I have not yet used it in self defense. I live in a blue state with a duty to retreat - so I purchased insurance from US Law Shield in the event I require legal assistance from an attorney.

@@ssnerd583 thats Great for you!☺️ As for me, I’ve no need to boast up’on my precision shooting abilities, which came naturally. It’s a bloodline thing and runs thru the family actually. In fact, quite a while back when my grandfather was alive, and in the military… he was invited one day with his boss, the Chiefs Sargent (my grandfather being a master sergeant) to go to the shooting range, and learn to shoot a gun. My grandfather had never shot a gun before that day, but he blew the socks off of everybody at the range. Let’s just say that he became a sniper trainer almost overnight. My uncle also discovered unexpectedly/accidentally the first time he went shooting. He did not miss hitting anything whatsoever. Coincidentally, there was somebody else there shooting at the Range, who witnessed my uncles decision shooting ability, he had just learned himself. Well that somebody else that was there a shooting just so happen to be not just a member, but also a recruiter for the very well known group, known as the Native Tribe of Shooters. He’s still a member of that group to this day. As for me , I also learned unexpectedly/accidentally that I am a precision shooter too. Although as for me., I wasn’t at a shooting range. I was at a long time friend of the family’s property, who lives way way out of Spokane county. In fact, this friend turned his property into what we refer to as the ghetto shooting range because it’s free and nobody pays to play with their things! Although this friend, who turned a bunch of his owned terrain into a ghetto shooting range, is also highly skilled himself. In fact, he is a 35 year retired sharpshooter trainer, so he follows all the laws and ordinances up-to-date. I had never been shooting prior to the invite I received to come shoot with him and see his new property/Land he purchased after retiring from sharp shooting. At that time, I never even owned a gun, Knorr had even ever shot one in my life. Let’s just say that he started me with the LR 22 something a little bit less kickish but still with some thrust and learning aim. The very first shot I took, was a half hit because it hit the target but just didn’t fully hit it and knock it over. I aimed the rifle again pulled the trigger and BOOM…. Like magic spot on! My friend, the retired sharpshooter trainer, looked at me and asked me “are you sure you’ve never been shooting?” I replied “100% positive, you copy Roger?” he laughed and had me aim for a target placed much farther away than the 1st. He taught me how to load the rifle, sim & shoot. Twas’ one hitter quitter, the litter of spitters. My friend than said, your fibbing me! There is no way you have never shot anything. I replied “it’s true. I have no reason to lie to you! I have nothing to gain! At this point, he sent his wife to go inside their house and grab his Glock 45. He showed me how to load a pistol safely and then I again blew him, my boyfriend, at the time, and myself away! At that point, my friend, the retired, sharpshooter trainer, threw off his cap onto the ground and said “I give up, where is your hidden camera?” Of course I didn’t bring one because I had no idea I had such precision aim. Throughout the rest of the day, I shot a few different things. Of course, my boyfriend at the time didn’t wanna shoot anything after learning about my precision aiming ability. So he just sat out and watched me work magically. My uncle and I have spoken a lot about both of our natural precision, aiming ability. I’ve reach the conclusion, that it is I come from a family of Angelic Beings😇 with Angelic Genes🧬. The reason for this is because three of our ancestors were wrongfully accused and executed. In her’story! Let’s just say that my ancestors basically ended the Jerusalem (Salem) witch trials entirely. The entire town and community became so angry at our government for the wrongful executions of my Ancestry back in 1692. The entire town/community loved my ancestors because they lived on a big farm, which they maintained. On that big farm they grew lots of herbs. Herbs that they used to cure everybody for free holistically of everything. My ancestors were Rebecca Nurse and her two sisters, Mary Eastey, and Sarah Cloyce. Yes, they all three had different last names because they were all 3 married with children already (which is why I am here today). Rebecca Nurse is my direct ancestor. The children, her and Francis created, lived on as Rebecca’s living Legacy.
