Let me guess what happened. Most of low grade trailer manufactures hire kids fired from a fast food place. They are on the production line on day one since they are cheap labor. It looks like the tongue is a little over 2 inches wide. The tongue measure from the outside to the tongue was from the face of the tongue while the other side was with the tape hooked to the opposite side of the tongue. The kid just bumps it over a bit to a "Looks good to me" thing. Very important is to check paint where the welds meet parent metals. Mig welding is cheap and looks great to an armature welder even if if is bad. Usually it only melts the parent metal on only one side. After time it fails since it did not melt to the other side. It show's up in time on painted and especially powder coated welds. Even vibration will sometimes expose poor welds. It happened to me on a motorcycle lift and Craftsman trimmer. The jack flaws were corrected by the jack mfg with a new frame. The trimmer I re-welded myself since I have a machine shop. This stuff happens when cheap labor is used and is not easily visualized right away. Put some pressure near welds and look carefully for cracks at edges of welds. I hope this helps.😲👀👌.

On those trailers they are built with pretty thin steel. My guess is that they don't get the 240volt mig welders, but they just use the little 120volt cheapies! The 240v migs can give ya some penetration, but those little 120s strain to leave ya with bird crap on your steel!!

We bought our Carry-on trailer from Tractor Trailer Supply as well in 2016. A few months later one of the 2 latches which hold the gate opened while driving on the freeway. The reason was that the gate had not been centered and therefore the pin which locks the gate was too short. They paid for fixing the problem because the trailer was still under warranty. Now the gate opened again on one side because of poor welding at the latch, it detached from the frame. The company’s response was „Its out of warranty, if a welding spot detached after one year, it’s not considered a manufacturers defect.“ Imagine a semi or a car falling apart at the welding spots after 8 years…. These trailers are a safety hazard, better Don’t drive behind one of those on the freeway !

That's unbelievable! I bet if you did a video like I did and put it up for all to see 👀 they would have taken care of you. I agree 💯% with what you said that the weld was no good. Breaking in a year like that is NOT right. No matter what you pay for something the welds should be properly penetrated.

I'm buying my first trailer and will be carrying my measuring tape with me. Thanks. Based on my research, it is know that these trailers are not the best quality when compared to those trailers costing 2-3x as much and is basically for us weekend warriors. So, it won't be a surprise to me if there are some unsightly things. I will be ok with some of the cheap stuff since I won't be using it day in and day out for work and will be using it mainly to haul my ZT mower to cut my parent's lawn. I don't want to spend too much money since it's not a work trailer. However, I will arm myself with a can of Rust Oleum paint and measure the coupler bar. I am looking at the newer model units. The old ones are hard to come by. Also, there are no discounts anymore.

First question I had was....is the tongue angled or parallel to the body of the trailer? That is, is it designed to track slightly away from the center of the road? Or is it off center just at the front? Or did they screw up the measurements twice in two locations. If so, it would 'crab' down the road. Seems odd...either way.
