Look on the bottom of any plastic container. You will see a small triangle. Inside the triangle you will see a number. Best compatible with gas and oil is #2. Water bottles are often a 5 or 7 or something like that. If the plastic is not compatible. They will deteriat. Some faster than others. Hope this helps? Great video!

Just done 17000Km on a 3 month US trip, never planned ahead where the next petrol station is or deliberately avoided area's due to isolation and less petrol stations etc, just thought I wing it (that's the way I roll :) and admittedly once or twice we were sweating it a bit but not once did we run out fuel.... So I am not sure how important this is for normal road riding, maybe more important for off-road which I don't do. I like how you tested scientifically whether the fuel was still good...love it. Cheers Joe

Fun Tip ... SEAFOAM in your Fuel will keep it fresh for 5+ years. Plus it removes ethanol from the fuel that ruins engines. Plus it removes carbon build up inside your engine. Its great.

I've used the 2-liter soda (carbonated drink) bottles. They are made from PET type plastic. They have a better screw top than the thin water bottles that you showed on your video. I've also used them to mix 2-cycle oil with gasoline to store for my chain saw and weed-eater (aka "string trimmer"). I drink a lot of soda, so I always have a supply of the 2-liter bottles and I can just throw them away after I use them. I'm currently building an auxiliary gas tank for my Harley for use on long trips. I'm going to be mounting it on the luggage rack and it will be plumbed into the fuel system of the bike, so I will just need to turn a valve to cause it to start feeding. I am making it out of a 5 gallon portable steel air tank, but with a filler hole like you see on the auxiliary fuel tanks that go in the beds of pickups. Ideally, I will run the main tank until it gets about half empty and then turn on the valve on the auxiliary tank. This will allow it to backfill the main tank while also supplying fuel to the engine. Well, at least that is the *idea*... :)

+Biker Bits Yeah, I'm hoping it will work out good. The additional tank should double my fuel capacity since the stock tank is only 5 gallons. I usually figure that after around 150-175 miles, I should start looking for a gas station, especially if I'm out west in the more remote areas. When it hits 200, I'm probably going to be pushing it. An additional 5 gallons (assuming I can use all of it) would be great. I usually plan for 35 mpg and if I get 40 mpg, that's just a bit extra cushion for safety. :)

The stale fuel works fine mixed with fresh fuel. However use something like a Mr. Funnel fuel funnel when pouring the gas, which will remove the water accumulated at the bottom of the fuel container. You don't want that water transferred to your gas tank. I have also used those funnels to pump out and strain stale fuel in automobile gas tanks and have removed over a quart of water from one vehicle. Also can add a dash of octane booster to replace any ethanol loss/octane loss if your fuel has ethanol in it at the pump.

Have a rectangular black leather outer sleeve to cover up the fuel can on the cruiser's back rack. Stitch it together from some vegetable tanned leather and dye it black. The leather shop should have studs and conchos to make it look the part. I have the Honda vtx1800 and it it running on fumes at135 miles due to a huge smoothed over (bondo) dent. Its not too difficult and should cost much less than$100 for everything.

Good review of all possible fuel containers but after stupidly running out of fuel twice I put fuel into an ordinary plastic engine oil bottle (quart size US) and carry it on the bike. Check these out, I purchased two for my bike, and mounted them under the rear trunk. I ride a Yamaha V-Star 1100, which has a horribly small fuel tank. I'm lucky to get 250 KLM until I run dry. These added a margin of safety that now I worry less about running out of fuel. Made in Germany, and they are perfect as "emergency reserve" tanks. www.zenoverland.com/portable-fuel-tanks/fuel-friend-15-litre-red.html
