A five or seven shot handgun is all you need... or is it? How many bullets do you need? How many does it take to stop a fight? The answer always is, "As many as it takes."
Concealed Carry intriuctor Mickey Schuch covers basic techniques for defending against multiple attackers, drugged assailants, and the body armor drill. Rapid fire to stop an assailant is the key. With practice you can combine speed with multiple shots on target, to stop threats.
In the video Mickey Schuch uses his Glock 19... shooting fast with multiple rounds on target.

As a retired LEO who survived 3 gunfights in my 30 years cops miss b/c suspects move, run and shoot back. Anyone can look good shooting cardboard that does not move. Also, there is limited money for ammo so LEOs normally qualify two times a year, 50 rounds each time. Most people who purchase a 15 shot auto loader carry it a few days then leave it home, or worse in the car, b/c it’s too heavy & bulky for EDC.

I picked up my first gun, planning for it to be all-purpose. Ruger SR9c. It weighs 23.4 oz empty and holds 10+1 or 17+1. If I or my wife actually plan to carry something, I'm wondering if maybe an LC380 or LC9s would be better, weighing 17.2 oz. I was thinking LC380 for the reduced recoil and reduced chance of pass-thru without being too small, yet easier to carry than the SR9c.

The bigger problem is states like New York and California where they limit magazine capacity

This is essentially what I say, too. No one has ever survived a gunfight and said, "boy, I wish I only had exactly as many as it took." So many variables, unknowable going into it, can determine whether you go home unharmed without a round expended, or laying dead next to an emptied double-stack auto. Shit happens, it ain't up to you, so you do what you can to help tip the odds in your favor.

The reason that law enforcement misses 80% of the time is because most of their depts. only make them qualify once a year according to the leo's that I know in my area. A lot of them don't even step on the range until that time comes or just before to brush up.

So are 10 rounds good enough? My wife carries a Glock 26 and I carry a 1911 9mm with 9+1.

I heard somewhere that many times it's 3 shots in 3 seconds within 3 yards. If that's true, you're good for 3 sequential aggressors! (Reload with the last round still chambered and you're good for another 3 with one shot to spare. Assuming at least one shot hits each and that it's effective, if only to allow you to disengage.)

If the attacker will stand perfectly still at 3 yards I'm pretty comfortable with 15 rounds.

FBI statistics; only 3.4 rounds are fired in a gunfight. I'm just being facetious I don't know what the actual stat is but I have seen it before but however, you may not be in an average gun fight so just remember that.

So how many rounds did he fire when he engaged the 2 targets at the very beginning of the video? Also how about that situational awareness when he got out of his truck just a few minutes later? :(. Shoot someone 6 times rapid fire and justify "I shot to stop a threat " in a courtroom. Let me know how that works.

Police miss 80% of the time. Sometimes that's a good thing. Of course that's when the shooting is unexpected. Here's the L.A.P.D. an ex-police officer was going around INTENTIONALLY killing police officers. So the L.A.P.D. was on high alert, actively looking for someone knowing full well it will be a gunfight. SO early morning, TWO individuals, not a single, were driving a DIFFERENT model truck and color (to be fair dark blue and dark grey look the same in the dark) from the basic description of the one their suspect was driving. Someone opened fired and 7 other L.A.P.D. who were positioned around the vehicle thinking "a shoot out" opened fired also. Over 103 rounds were fired into this vehicle. The result, a 71 year old women was shot, hit 2 times, the other occupant, another woman was injured ONLY by flying glass. (Toyota must make one HELLUVA truck) These women were delivering the morning paper. The 71 year old woman shot is OK and the daughter is fine, BUT the police pulled over a suspected cop killer, fired over 100 rounds by 8 PROFESSIONAL "PROTECTORS OF THE PUBLIC" and by all accounts there should have been NOTHING breathing inside that truck. Fortunately the 80% rule was 99.999%, this time.

I have my first gun at home and I had only 5 rounds of hollowpoints in the mag. Just increased it to 10! That's in a 17-round capacity mag, to not fully compress the spring for long periods of time. My other two mags are 10's, so that's what I'm used to and it's also the max in some states. I also have an oak stick in the bedroom, so that's an alternative that is always ready. Also considering a retractable baton as a non-lethal defensive tool to carry in some cases. I used to always have a blunt kuboton "keychain" with me. Keeps the keys in the pocket well!

my question is, how do you know it will take more then one round? I've always heard "shoot until the threat is stoped or down). what if they were to stop as soon as they see you have or draw your gun or stop/ drop to the ground after first shot? I realize there's A LOT of factors in a self defense situation but a single well placed shot could put the guy down.

cool, I'm just gonna carry with one and assume I can hit exactly what I need, when I need in order to end the fight. If that doesn't happen, I'm just gonna tell the other guy what you said and expect him to surrender in the face of that unassailable argument

Chris H why in god’s name would you carry a gun and think something “could” be that easy for you? At that point why carry? There are 2 types of incapacitation, phycological (surrender/retreat) and physical (unconscious). You can not rely on phycological, to physically incapacitate you need to hit the off switch or keep making holes to cause blood loss which only starts a timer. It can take a long time for somebody to run low enough on blood to be unconscious. Dont be naive, be educated.

I love the pull the gun to my chest and check my six... Should someone be coming up right behind him in his space he gets knocked the hell out from either side or if they bear hug him then they are both on the ground wrestling for the same gun. He should keep his gun at eyesight level and turn his whole body. That way he can block, push back and shoot the threat. Just my two cents.
