A couple of them are built engines. They keep them pinned on the Rev limiter the whole race. Others are just cheap old rigs people come out and run for fun.

I usually switch out all my idi trucks to the high torque gear reduction style starters. Make sure all your batteries are charged and connections clean.

@@worthshop thank you, that is good advice. I’ve got new batteries up there now and just need to get down there and clean and check all the connections, just like you said. I’m out of town for work but when I get back home next month, I’ll make time for it. Do you have a high torque gear reduction starter that you’d recommend that’s help up to longer cranking times? I’ve got manual glow plugs on an unknown engine, and it takes about 2 glow plug + 2 long crank cycles. My process is glowplugs for 7 seconds, then crank with accerlsteror pedal down to the floor for 10 seconds, then do another 7ish second glow plug cycle and then another 10+ seconds of cranking, and usually at 60+ degrees F it’ll get it going. Block heater doesn’t seem to make a huge difference which makes me think it’s an injector but the truck doesn’t smoke.

@75788Diesel Your fuel system is loosing its prime. Loosing pressure somewhere or draining back to the tank would be my guess on long crank time. Find the leak, or install an electric lift pump to prime the system before you crank on it. Search Amazon for a gear reduction high torque starter. They are pretty much all the same no matter what name is on them. Some are more expensive, but I've seen no better quality based upon higher price so I just get the cheaper ones. I have a question some times when my 6.9 idi is running it blows Gray smoke at idle

If it is just when cold and goes away once engine is warmed up it is kinda normal. If it is all the time, I would start looking into the engines timing, then cleaning or replacing injectors.

@@worthshop not all the time just some days it does and others not but I've realized it does it more when I get below 1/2 tank

@@bullnoseMafia Might have pinholes in your fuel pickup tube in the tank. They rust out and begin to suck air with the fuel.
