Of the 90 jobs posted on the ODOT website Highway Maintenance Specialist (Seasonal) is the lowest paid of all of them, and its only seasonal (Rent is due year round). I am just guessing, but would suspect this is why there is no one to plow the roads.

Could have something to do with it. Also, the green weenies do not like to salt the roads here. To much administrative overhead. This state is shit when it comes to land and hwy management. The drivers suck, even in good weather too. Beautiful state , but the disease of a certain irrational party has been killing it for nearly four decades.

This is why BUSINESSES need to have snowdays when schools do. If you don't work in emergency response, a medical facility, a group home, or something else directly responsible for the health and safety of others, you shouldn't HAVE TO go out in such stuff. Walmart can close, factories can close, insurance offices can close.

I can't even describe now neglectfully Portland handled this. I live in central WA so I'm not really afraid of snow, but I had to go through Portland the day after it fell. Bright and sunny, 12 hours after the snow stopped, you'd think at least the freeways would be passable. Nope, Portland closed off all of them, forcing all the semi trucks into the suburbs! Not a single road showed evidence of plowing, spraying, or gritting. All of them inches deep in shiny solid ice since it'd had time to partly melt and re-freeze. Later that night I had to come back through. They'd opened up the freeways but they were also still completely untreated! 24 hours after the storm and I-205 was covered in solid ice, bashed and smashed into 6-inch ice boulders. It is just outrageous that they treat their citizens this way, not to mention blocking the entirety of West Coast commerce for days.

I lived in PDX for a couple of years, relocated from Chicago (moved back to Chitown over a year ago). I never got to experience a crippling PDX snowstorm. What happened here is very reminiscent of the big snowstorm that hit Chicago on 2 February 2011. A fast moving snow storm dumped way more snow than was forecasted causing massive traffic jams and causing people to abandon their cars on Lake Shore Drive. Since then, the Illinois Department of Transportation got into a mindset of over-preparing for snow falls. I think ODOT would be wise to take from the playbook that Chicago has...

A crippling PDX snowstorm = a normal winter day in Buffalo. The problem is the complete lack of snow removal resources, not the intensity of the storm. I grew up in Buffalo. This about of snow would not have stopped any great lakes city for a second. But Oregon is in complete denial of snow happening in this state and does not have enough equipment for Portland. Why is it ODOT's fault though? They said on the news that there was gonna be a snow storm a couple days prior its not their fault people with FWD cars still hit the road. And the truckers are supposed to have chains. They got a heads up but didn't listen. Plus the PNW is knows have having virtually rust free cars and I think most people want to keep it that way. Guys, this is shameful. I recently moved from Portland to Yakima, where it snows 10x more, and I was worried about it. No, in a real city, they actually plow the roads, apply de-icer, grit, etc all in a timely manner. The road in front of your house may not get it right away but you can be very sure the freeways will be plowed immediately and continuously as it snows, and major arteries get plowed within hours. There has not been a single day in Yakima when I couldn't get around in my MIATA. What Portland does is let all the snow fall, accumulate fully, partially melt and re-freeze into several inches of solid shiny ice, and THEN they start taking a crack at fixing things. I'm a trucker so I had to go through Portland on Thursday and later that night. There is absolutely no excuse for an interstate freeway, a major thoroughfare for the nation, to be 6 inches deep in ice boulders 24hrs after the snow stopped falling. It is neglect, pure and simple. The road to Timberline freaking Lodge never gets as treacherous as I-205 was on Thursday. After this stuff melts you guys should be marching on ODOT/PBOT's offices and demanding change. It wouldn't surprise me if they were getting paid by auto mechanics and body shops, because their negligence has caused a colossal amount of car damage to the people of this already haggard city.

@@reptar69 Portland's budget is at least 50x what Yakima's is. When I went through Portland I did not see a single inch of road that was plowed. There's also the point that you could see trails of de-icing fluid on I-84 in the Gorge and I-5 in the valley, but they stopped as soon as you got into Portland. I understand that it's hard to get every single inch of road in the city when it's big. However that's no excuse for doing absolutely nothing. When I went over Satus Pass, which is just a 2-lane nowhere road, they had 2 plows cruising echelon formation getting it cleared. That's all it would have taken to open up 2 lanes of I-5 from Vancouver to Wilsonville, a similar distance. If Portland's taxes aren't high enough to sustain 2 plows per direction for the 3 major freeways, cut it down to 1 and you'll get one lane working. They didn't even do that until more than 24 hours later. But really, I suspect their biggest problem was something else. Portland has taken a trendy position that traffic cannot be solved by road expansions, which has resulted in absolutely crippling traffic for it's size. The city is totally impassable for 4 hours in the afternoon. They figure that drives people to use transit, but it also blocks commercial through-traffic, emergency response vehicles... and snow plows. This snow storm hit during the rush hourS, meaning even if the city had a world-class standing army of snowplows, they would have been unable to get anywhere unless they had the foresight to mix them into the traffic many hours earlier. I have no doubt that the only lesson City Council has taken from all this was, "Yeah cars are bad actually, maybe these mouth-beathers will learn to take the MAX next time."

The biggest thing in this area is how fast it turns to compact snow and ice. This area already has a propensity for ice, due to the Columbia River. Having lived in several places, including Portland-Metro, I have to say that there is nowhere where snow doesn't cause problems. Most issues mainly come down to drivers (of all sorts) who don't plan ahead and pay attention to changing conditions. In over 30 years of driving (including professional driving), I've never had to abandon a vehicle for any reason. This nation NEEDS to do a better job with training drivers and testing when it's time to renew licenses.

It's fascinating that Oregon folks are looking for a systemic issue. Here in the Chicago area, we know enough to FOLLOW THE MONEY. Who does ODOT contract with? How much are those contracts? How are those contracts chosen? Who's making what salary? How many of their relatives work for ODOT? These are the questions you need to ask. Someone is getting rich by NOT clearing the roads. Name NAMES. It's not like they are some mysterious organization. Demand answers.

This is 100% ODOT, I have been driving through Oregon for years, and they have always been a reactive agency, rather than proactive. He is right about being understaffed, but they are known to drop the ball on winter storms, and usually will wait them out before they even try tackling the road conditions. I have been driving from Tacoma to Boise on line haul for 5 years now, and I did Tacoma to Portland to Wenatchee for years before that. I've fought snoqualmie, blewett, satus, manastash, umtanum, cabbage, meecham, ladd canyon, 3 mile, and the howling winds of the gorge on I-84, and it's always the ODOT sections that get sloppy, and usually get closed. It really doesn't help matters that Oregon has ridiculous chain up laws for rigs pulling doubles. They will make you put $1000 worth of chains on, on bare pavement at the bottom of a hill, only to have the chains disintegrate by the time you reach the snow, and if you aren't carrying 5 tons worth of chains you can run out fast in this stupid state, and they love to hit you with that $880 chain fine. Fuck the ODOT, they have stood by year after year and watched people die or get injured every time it gets cold.

No this was on the drivers who didn't stay home. Everywhere was clogged with traffic. There was absolutely nothin ODOT/PDOT could have done because they couldn't drive on the roads. It's also on the forecasting service for having a really bad forecast. They were calling for 1-3 inches of snow, not 11+. The snow came out of nowhere and there were simply too many people on the roads. Add in that Google Maps was sending everywhere to the same roads and it created gridlock everywhere.

This is 100% the flaut of ODOT. They should have closed down the roads if this was going to be an issue. It would have given time for the plow crews to keep up with the snow removal. Other states' DOT will shut the interstate system down in their state when it becomes apearent that the plows will not be albe to keep up with the snow. People will grumble, but you will not have this problem.

Don't they consider clearing the ON RAMPS, station officers and squad cars, and carefully reverse the traffic flow to at least get the off of the freeway? At least that way you could make a hole in the line and start with plows and sanders/salters. Better than letting people die (or worse yet all of them run out of gas and snarl traffic even more) for 7 hours.
