The best way to handle an icy bridge is to not accelerate or decelerate. That can cause the rear of the car to slide sideways. Allow the front wheels to roll; you'll have some steering control when the tires are rolling. Make small steering corrections. Once you start sliding, you're along for the ride; you have no control over your destiny until the sliding stops.

Cagordie I think it's more disturbing to watch the other cars not slow down and stay behind the person sliding... they are in such a big hurry to get around him... this could result in them getting hit by the sliding car as you never know what direction the driver of the sliding car is going to take. In northern locales (probably anywhere if the temperature is cold enough), it can freeze UNDER and overpass, as well, because that part of the roadway is in the shade. Be aware, if you weren't. What is different is, you only slide for the length of the shady spot and when you're back under the sun, the roadway is fine. It can still be dangerous and cause an accident.
@asad-kc8zf

Most of the bridges and overpasses become more slick because the temperature is cooler both on top and below, whereas normal roads the ground temperature might be a bit warmer.

I guarantee you that over half of the people who slid on the overpass slid because they tapped their brakes on the ice. The VERY worst thing to do on ice is BRAKE or JERK the steering wheel and if you still find yourself sliding sideways you turn the front tires towards the direction your sliding in. 🤦🏻

No, they are all accelerating to pickup speed for the highway. When your drive wheels hit ice they start going faster than the none drives which causes the rear to kick out. It works similar to drifting. Best thing to do is coast across icy bridges, throwing it in neutral helps if you don't know how to feather the throttle.

@shawnnorrell1686 I get your point, but that's very bad advice. If you're able to get around a vehicle, then do so. Otherwise, your vehicle just becomes another object to get hit, especially if you're not as far down the road as the vehicle that had already come to a stop. This situation is NOT like letting someone make a turn in front of you as a courtesy. This situation is dangerous, and the more vehicles that stop just makes things worse.

Reminds me of when I was traveling from Iowa to McCallen, TX in January 1988 when a storm swept up from gulf of California straight up through Texas and the midwest. When we got on the I-35 toll in Kansas, it start snowing hard. By the time we got to Oklahoma City, I-35 was a one lane path with about 3 feet of snow. We tried a hotel just south of Oklahoma City but they were full and wouldn't even let me pay regular room price to put out sleeping bags on the floor of the conference room, so we kept going. We hit the Texas border just before sunrise and the interstate was nothing but a sheet of ice. We were in a Plymouth Arrow and got behind a trucker from Missouri and we were going into Ft. Worth doing no more than 35 mph during morning rush hour. People flying past us trying to drive normal speed only to end up in the median and ditch. Interstate got better about 20 miles south of Ft. Every vehicle sliding was RWD. People need to learn the difference between RWD (rear wheel drive) and FWD (front wheel drive) and how they work in slick conditions. I drove my Miata (RWD) in this and I learned that even applying constant throttle to maintain speed can cause you to slide on icey roads. I had let off the throttle a bit every time there was a bridge and that worked perfectly.

In Maine, we have signs that say 'Bridge freezes before roads'. This is why. The ground acts as a big heatsink, keeping the roads from freezing until it's been well below freezing for hours, even days, but because wind moves around a bridge they can freeze quickly. Might sound obvious - but it clearly wasn't to these drivers, and I've seen people do this in my mirrors! I *always* let off the gas and coast over bridges when it's even close to freezing, even if there's little snow, because tires also tend to pick up melted snow from the regular roadway and lay it down to freeze when they hit a bridge.

I'm 64 years old, and since I was 10 years old, I knew to slow the speed down on wet and frozen roads, so you want go sliding down the road. And all driving book tell us If road and weather conditions are adverse, motorists should operate at a speed well below the posted limit. Leave extra space between vehicles. Increase your following distance to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. You should reduce your speed by 1/3 on wet roads and by 1/2 or more on snow packed roads (i.e., if you would normally be traveling at a speed of 60 mph on dry pavement, then on a wet road you should reduce your speed to 40 mph, and on a snow-packed road you should reduce your speed to 30 mph). And If freezing rain begins while you're on the road, .try to find a safe location (off the highway or busy road) to pull off. BE SMART AND DRIVE SAFE IT YOUR LIFE AND SOMEONE ELSE YOU'LL BE SAVING.

Driving over frozen overpasses is dangerous because many drivers do not know how to drive over them in Texas. Especially truck drivers and owners of cars that have rear wheel drive only. They think that should keep accelerating. Just put it in neutral and DO NOT use your brakes. I also noticed that none of the bridges were treated with sand or anything in the Dallas and surrounding areas. Every year north Texas cities have always taken pre-emptive action to minimize these dangers. Did they all decide to drop the ball together? Excellent place to have cameras? Excellent place to have treated the roads ahead of time.

That ice rink overpass is at Arlington, Interstate 30. I grew up in CT & NJ. Moved to DFW in 2016. Texas as a state, cannot justify spending millions in each county, city etc on snow removal assets. Especially DFW. Thousands of miles of roadways, elevated roadways, highlands, grasslands, marshes, swamps, prairies and very little high elevated areas in this region. DFW sits in a bowl, moisture gets trapped here very easily and the high winds doesn’t help when it’s freezing and below freezing.
