Working at a transmission shop, most of the problems we see with these newer cars is the manufacturers run them too hot. Normal operating temp on an old trans used to be around 160-180 degrees. Nowadays they all seem to run 200-230 degrees because they have bypasses in the coolers lines that limit when fluid can go through the trans cooler. The trans coolers themselves are also undersized and are not very effective.

Hi Scotty from the Philippines, achilles hill of cvts are the failed key and keyway on the torque or driven pulley. The driven pulley or torque pulley have 2 parts the fixed sheave and the sliding sheave (this allows the steel belt to slide in and out of the sheave), with mating hubs respectively. Fixed sheave - hub [female] is fitted with a key say 10mm steel ball like what i saw in Nissan CVT tear down and the sliding hub [male] is fitted with a keyway. Key and keyway arranged at 120 degree angle apart, this is why the sliding sheave has a limited twist angle. With repeated sliding of the mating hubs both key and keyway wear down eventually, worst case a notch is created along the keyway, the torque gets stuck or the car truck or 4x4s wont reach the band speed. In this case cvt's efficiency delines easier granting fluid cycle change is similar across all types of transmission.

Ford (when they came out with the 2011 Fiesta and 2012 Focus) tried to do the "software update" thing but ultimately fell prey to class action lawsuits and eventually had to pay out for people to have the clutches repaired. I think they did eventually fix the issues (in the 2014+ model year) but they discontinued the US Focus around 2016, as they did with some other cars -- for other reasons -- a few years after that). But I remember getting a coupon for up to $2000 cash back if I had my Focus's transmission serviced. Too bad I traded it in and lost $3000 on the trade before the lawsuits came about (I couldn't claim it because I wasn't a current owner of a Focus at the time and couldn't prove i had the trans repaired, which I didn't). But for CVTs I still like what Toyota is doing with the higher-end Corollas... with the launch gear (a physical gear and then it shifts over to the CVT transmission, which I think si good because the most torque and stress on a transmission I would think would be during acceleration, and particularly from a dead stop).. However I'm still not sold on them. If they can prove that one can last 200k under normal maintenance, without issues, then I might consider one, but so far, they require a lot of maintenance (fluid changes every 30-60k, and gentle driving, and you might get 150k if you're lucky, regardless of brand). It's still too new of a technology for me to want to adopt, not yet at least. Personally I think though if CVTs do over-take standard (geared) automatic transmissions, they will employ some sort of method like the launch gear that Toyota has as this seems to be the best of both worlds... the gear takes the most stress from starting from a dead stop, but once you get up to cruising speeds, you get the benefits of the CVT.

The 2022 Chevy Traverse has something very wrong with its transmission and/or whatever module tells it to shift. We just got back from a road trip, starting in Indiana, out to the NC outer banks and back. We rented one of these with about 6k on the odometer. It would shutter and struggle under load, shifting up the gears too soon, before the vehicle could get up any momentum. Interestingly, if we had slowed down and I hit resume on the cruise control, it had no problem accelerating back to its previous set speed. It was only a problem if I was giving it the gas.

Usually, with anything that slips or slides it's going to wear out! Maybe they should design them so the belt can be changed at a certain mileage interval! What would be idea, would be some type of fluid coupling that would mimic the properties of the CVT transmission; this would reduce the wear!

A rubber belt won't work for a heavy vehicle. These things work off of a "steel belt" that's really just stacked discs... and instead of "pulling" on a pulley like a snowmobile rubber belt-- these CVT's "Push" the belt forward to drive the pulley. and it needs to be bathed in oil... Go look up CVT's on "Weber Auto" channel.

I wouldn’t get a bumper to bumper. The transmission on those is bad but not as bad is earlier model Nissans so I think you’ll be okay if you take care of it and don’t abuse it. If you want more piece of mind maybe a power train warranty if it’s cheaper but personally I wouldn’t do it.
@MacTechG42 жыл бұрын
Best to return the rogue if possible, Nissan CVT are the worst in the industry, the best transmission is still the manual, the conventional torque converter automatic transmission may be soulless and boring, but it’s reliable Best bet would be for you to get a Honda/Toyota in manual, or if you must, a regular torque converter automatic.
@brockbaker3able2 жыл бұрын
Watch some videos and learn to change the fluid yourself. It’s pretty simple actually. Change the fluid at least every 30k miles and you’ll get the best life from it. It definitely won’t last as long as an old automatic but it’ll give you useable life if taken care of. Baby it basically or if you can get more than you paid it might be worth passing it on. As for the warranty, no, waste of money. Most cars won’t break outside of 100k miles and the extra warranty would be gone at that mileage. They know that. They normally don’t cover any wear and tear items so save the money and use it to care for the car
@benjy1172 жыл бұрын
I just bought a 2017 Maxima and got the 36,000 mile warranty with it. So I have until 100,000 at least. I believe the 2017 models and up they ironed most problems out of them. I do know Nissan was sued because of the faulty CVTs. Altimas has many problems from early 2007 until mid 2015.( I only drive around 10k or 12k miles a year and 90% of that is hwy miles anyway.) If my 200 Touring lasted me 80k miles so far with 108,000 miles on it I'm sure this Nissan CVT will last at least that long. Those 200s are rated the worse cars ever made and I had it over 8 years now and it hasn't had a problem yet.
@RPD912 жыл бұрын
The transmission isn't bad, the cooling system was really bad on earlier modles. Plus, changing the CVT fluid (has to be the same specification on the your car's manual) alongside both filters will prolong the life of the CVT.

Funny you mention the 8 speed toyota transmission Scottie. The transmission in my 019 Camry has to be the worst transmission I have ever experienced. It's rough, shifts erratically, and jerky, once rocking me back and forth in the drivers seat, and once downshifting too soon with a bang sound. Now most of the problems I encounter are when cornering in roundabouts (they have gone crazy here on PEI, Canada),when powering out of the roundabout. The dealer did a magic software adjustment and it has helped, but I have to think all this erratic behavior in my trany has to be shortening it's life.
