Chinese auto brand BYD is second only to Tesla in Australia’s EV sale race and if you include its hybrids it actually sells more vehicles than Tesla globally - and it’s a plug-in hybrid we’re testing here with the 2024 BYD Sealion 6.
A direct rival for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - as well as the plug-in hybrid MG HS and Mitsubishi Outlander - this all-new mid-size SUV ticks all the boxes in terms of size, equipment levels, powertrain options and price.
Priced from $48,990 plus on-road costs, the two-grade BYD Sealion 6 range opens with the entry-level Dynamic variant and closes with the more powerful Premium flagship, which costs $52,990 plus ORCs and delivers more than 200kW of power.
Plug-in hybrid mid-size SUVs haven’t exactly captured the imagination of Aussie car buyers, so can BYD buck the trend with the first of several PHEV models it plans to launch here , as part of its stunning Australian market ambitions ? We sent Feann Torr to evaluate the model formerly known as the BYD Seal U for this full video review.

Makes perfect sense for me. I live in a house where I can charge the car at least 10 hours per night. I use my car for work commute and shopping mainly. If the family is not traveling anywhere then I would drive around 60kms per day, 20 kms to work each way, and maybe 10kms each way to coles\dine out. If I charge my car every night, which is not a problem for me at all, then I can achieve zero petrol consumption with this BYD car. If I go for a fishing trip or the family goes for a road trip, I won't get range anxiety with the hybrid system, and I don't need to spend hours on charging. I don't know how well it drives, can't wait to try it out, but the whole plug in hybrid thing sounds so perfect for someone like me.

Your idea is the same as that of most people who buy this car. Even if the car runs out of electricity and runs only on gasoline, the car's fuel consumption is the lowest of all this type of SUV, which is why the BYD SEALION 6 has been the top SUV seller in China for several years.

I'm in my early 40s and because I didn't grow up with touchscreens, I evolved in an analogue world, that's why I don't love features like these. Just my opinion." "Would you go full EV or would you go hybrid?" We're going both. Full EV for the car that does the major city running about. To and from the station or work and picking up the kids, taking them to their activities etc.. The PHEV for the longer road trips we do interstate. It's the best of both worlds for now. Still gives us 80-100 km electric only which is more than enough for the daily runaround, but no range anxiety when out on the open road on a long trip. The SeaLion 6 differs from most PHEV's in that the system is a dual hybrid. It's a Range Extender and a direct drive. It runs a generator that feeds the battery with electricity - very much like the BMW i3 REX. This means that the instant torque from the electric motors is always available... and provides power to the wheels via the transmission when required. So whilst it's easy to lump all hybrids into one basket, the execution of how they get the power to the rubber, can differ greatly.

@@carsales When it comes to the DM-i system, it is difficult to argue that it is less fuel-efficient, even if you never charge it. Under low and medium-speed conditions (approx. ≤ 90 km/h), the system recovers kinetic energy, and the engine (acting as a range extender) operates at its optimal fuel efficiency. This energy partly powers the electric motors, with the surplus stored in the battery. At higher speeds, the system is relatively less fuel-efficient, but the difference is not significant since most of the energy is consumed by aerodynamic drag while the system changes into direct drive just like normal ice cars.

@Deandzzzzzz
@Deandzzzzzz 24 күн бұрын
Here is how BYD’s DM-i works 1. EV only mode. Obviously the vehicle runs on electricity only when battery has more than 25% juice. ICE is not in use. 2. Hybrid mode (in parallel). ICE starts in parallel with electric motor to send maximum power to wheels when overtaking or towing. Meaning both electric motor and ICE send power to wheels. 3. Hybrid mode (in series). When battery level is lower than 25%, ICE kicks in but in series with generator to charge the battery which feeds electric power to electric motor. In this scenario only electric motor drives the wheels directly. 4. ICE only mode. This probably only occurs at highway when cruising as it is more efficient to run on fossil fuel at 100+ km/h than electric energy. How DM-i system works is not hard to understand but how the system auto-selects the best driving mode under different circumstances is what makes it truly intelligent.

Thanks for a short but informative review. I think the car has a lot going for it, especially when compared to its natural competitors, the Outlander and its X-trail cousin. To get anywhere near the level of fittings in either of those, you're looking at around $20k more, or for the Outlander Exceed Tourer, about $25k. The MG isn't in the same league as this car. I suspect that most Chinese cars prioritize ride comfort over corner-carving, though I'd love it if the importer got a local suspension-tuning company to look at that part of the car - the overall appeal of it won't be hampered at all. The poor warranty on the suspension and multimedia is unacceptable though, especially given Mitsubishi covers _everything_ for up to 10 years. It makes me suspicious about the durability and overall quality of the vehicle.

I guess it is largely due to the fact Toyota cannot keep the cost low because of the low production volumn. In Japan its home market here PHEV is basically non existence. And virtually all PHEV models are adapted from normal hybrid model by just simplying inserting a battery into the original boot space....(ie, not a flat battery under the floor between the wheels like a pure EV). Also all PHEV in all brands here in Japan are only available in the highest trim level. I was buying my SUV last week and originally I was considering PHEV (venza / harrier) but the salesman just told me that with that price I might as well just go ahead and buy a lexus 350h L version, it is better for resell value as well in the future (yep, from a toyota salesman). It is pretty clear that BYD is never good at naming their products properly. If you look at the Toyota cars their names are easier to pronouce for both local Japanese and westerners at the same time. And also the names are typically just one word. Occasionally you see something like corolla cross but the 'cross' part is also very easy to read and understand. Also they should have tuned the suspension for western countries, in China the super soft suspension makes sense because there are a lot of road bumps everywhere but this is not the case in many other countries.

You certainly can only use fuel but you'll use a lot more than 1.5L/100km. You'll use a lot more than that anyway if the engine is running, or no fuel if you're running on EV. We need to have a longer test but you'll probably average around 7-8L/100km if you never charge it.

It’s almost as if BYD know they’ll fail not long after that point - dampers aren’t cheap, and infotainment systems these days are not exactly pull out and replace DIN systems ... as well most of the HVAC hidden in touchscreen has always been a dealbreaker for me and just about everyone I know - like a physical steering wheel we just prefer tactile buttons and knobs for some things. Technically speaking, BYD's phevs can handle 120km/h conditions under pure ev mode, which means it can intelligently heat the engine according to the preset soc value when the battery is gradually running low. No debate at all in fact: The EV market is completely oversaturated, and everyone who wanted an EV has one, now. I see that Burn Your Driveway has now become Burn Your Dealership - with an entire dealership going up in flames. If you buy a BYD Hybrid or EV, you are crazy. Period. End of story. If you MUST buy an EV, then never buy anything except a Korean one. Seriously. Their EVs and Hybrids leave everyone else for dead. And they don't burn down. I rode in many EV taxis in Korea this month - and if Taxi drivers are on their 3rd or 4th EV in a row, you KNOW it makes sense round town, because the Taxi business is mathematical in nature. They will never go back to an ICE Taxi. Even driving up to 300k a day, they can fully charge cheaply at home overnight, and the downtime is smaller than any ICE car. But EVs for long journeys are utterly stupid, and if your company's schtick is "range", "range" and "more range", then your company is going bankrupt unless you change your focus yesterday. Hybrids are the future for long range driving, and my uncle's 2024 Hyundai Grandeur is a 2.5-litre hybrid, which is basically a modern Bentley limousine, and the nicest car I have ever travelled in, and it averaged 26.8 kilometres per litre on a 400k trip. That's 63 MPG in highway miles, but almost never at a constant speed, and with many stops along the way. Sadly the best and highest spec Korean cars are mostly for the Korean market only.
