Who would have thought 10 years ago that you could buy a car that will do 0-100 in under 4 seconds for under $70,000. The 2024 BYD Seal Performance represents incredible value for money when you consider the performance equation. Even at the entry level, it's affordable for what it is. Paul Maric reviews the latest electric sedan from China.

Just wanted to correct something mentioned in the video. I said it’s capable of 11kW 3-phase AC charging. That’s only for Europe - Australia is limited to single-phase 7kW AC charging.

BYD does seem to listen to customers feedback and had changed many of the visual annoyances, like the water droplets, "Build Your Dreams", and the ugly random lines in the interior. The Seal is now an absolutely stunning looking car that has a premium feel.

I would love to see Paul do a similar review of the Premium model as I think most sensible people will buy this model. Inline with the fake reviews made from Chinese? 🤦‍♂️ If you did any research and had commonsense you’ll find Chinese manufacturers have the lowest quality control. I saw a BYD Liverpool mall in a Sydney last week and it looked cheap and the door handle had broken off even. There’s numerous online complaints and videos of these cars rusting prematurely and catching fire overseas. Each to their own, my standards are higher and I’d never cheap out on a china car with no resale value and be a lab rat.

The BYD has a 3kw V2L capability. (Vehicle to Load) So it can power your house (3kw output will power your fridge+freezer+TV easily) in a grid down or you can charge solar batteries if already off grid (when you get a few low solar days in row). BYD = around Six Powerwalls, do the math. Telsa does not have V2L (nor indicator storks), that's a deal breaker for me. You don't need V2L till you do. Thank me later :)

The most comprehensive and best review of the Seal I have seen yet. Haven’t driven one, but have sat in and played with the infotainment, etc. The interior seems more premium than my Model 3. The seats are just as comfortable, it has better ventilation/hvac, a driver’s display and hud, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, indicator stalk, real leather seats (ventilated as well as heated) and just a few more physical buttons. The displays are lower resolution than the Tesla and the likes of BMW and Mercedes and are perhaps the only thing that reduces the premium feel of the interior. The boot is probably the biggest compromise. My M3 boot is probably my second biggest ‘pinch point’ (the first being no driver’s display). The Seal boot is smaller still. There is less storage considering boot (including underfloor) and “frunk”. I believe BYD missed a trick by slavishly copying (ahem, I mean taking inspiration from) the Model 3 and not making this a liftback. Still, if practicality is the main goal, then the Seal U will be better, in the same way that the Model Y is more practical than the 3. Here in NZ, I believe the version of the Seal that will sell the best is the big battery, single motor “premium”. Apart from the extra motor and dampers (hence better performance) that the “Performance” Seal has, the Premium only misses out on a heated steering wheel and electronic child locks, but gains 50km of WLTP range. According to the BYD salesman, the active safety features can be changed to “nag only” (my terminology) rather than mechanical intervention. Whether that is something that has to be set every time is yet to be determined. Certainly here in NZ, BYD seem more receptive to making tweaks after customer feedback than other manufacturers. Just too much is absent or has been removed from the new Model 3 for me to consider it as an upgrade (driver’s display, blind spot monitoring, USS, radar, passenger lumbar support, indicator and gear selector stalks. So the Seal now becomes the front runner.

Thanks Paul for your very balanced review. I have ordered the Premium. We also have an Atto3 which has proven to be a very reliable and efficient vehicle. Cost less than $7 to charge to full from our solar system. I’m sure BYD will adjust all the ADAS stuff but in the meantime just turn it off. In fact I think I read that this is already happening. I like the lack of the Tesla style one pedal strong regeneration. BYD does the same thing in a softer way. BYD is going to put the cat among the pigeons with the German overpriced and compromised EV’s.
@vasil7410
@vasil7410 4 ай бұрын
I hope they do sort out the ADAS stuff because I just bought the Seal Performance and the lane keeping assist in particular is very bad. But the fundamentals of the car are very good, so it's just a matter of BYD having the motivation to improve the software. BTW, I have the previous Model 3 as a second EV and didn't think the Highland was worth changing over to.

@@User-cb4jm I'll be compiling a list of things I think they need to improve after a month of ownership, then send it through to BYD. I also have a Premium on order. Actually, it has just arrived in Hobart, but I want to drive the Performance AND the Premium before committing. I've also driven the Tesla M3 Highland RWD which is ~4k more than the Premium and only around 5.5k less than the Performance AWD, so even though I was quite impressed with the M3, other than no stalks, no drivers display and no HUD, both of the BYD Seal version would have to be noticeably inferior to the M3 for me to choose the Tesla. Still, at this stage I haven't ruled out any of the 3 potentials YET! I really don't need the power of the Performance (who REALLY does?) but gee the Premium RWD will have to be noticeably inferior. But, not ruling out the Performance just yet. 🙂 Heart vs mind stuff as usual.

@@Paul-ow9ddas someone who just got delivery of the Premium, I will say that it is not as punchy off the line as I expected for 5.9s. Reviews mention it as well as an intentional choice to dull the initial take off, it is extremely smooth and you gain speed quickly - but you don’t get shoved into your seat on take off like you might in a Model 3 or idk how the Performance model might be as well. Perfect car other than the annoying speed sign alert and aggressive behaviour around lane marking - which of all attributes with the car should be easily resolved with software updates.

Thanks for the review. I’ve had my Seal Premium for 4 weeks and driven about 2,500km. It’s a great car and the only additional criticism would be the traffic speed sign accuracy. That’s an additional thing I turn off because it gets it wrong too often. And beeps! If it just flashed the sign then that’d be adequate. The major issue though is that these safety settings don’t persist. You have to change them every time. This isn’t limited to the Seal. It’s across the board and ANCAP will be used as an excuse. Personal driver preferences need to be honoured though, and auto makers need to recognise this.

Thanks for the review. Its looks a great car. I have a 2022 Model 3 LFP, which I'm happy with but certainly the Seal is worth a look. I haven't driven a Seal yet, but have looked around and sat in one for a while. It will depend on how you like your interiors but for me coming from a Tesla the interior felt a bit cluttered (I guess I must like the "clean" look after all) - although I would get used to it. However I would miss the access to all the Superchargers as I have nothing but great experiences with them here in NZ (as opposed to our public network, where its not uncommon to find broken or busy chargers).

Regarding screen rotation on my Atto 3: I've used it a couple of times. The chief benefit is you can get 3 camera angles when parking instead of 2. But it's otherwise in landscape mode most of the time. I like having the option. Horizontal is better for me but there are people who prefer portrait, so even if you only rotate it once, it's worth it. Only issue is Android Auto/Caplay only work in horizontal mode, as do a couple of other apps, which is absurd.
@Paul-ow9dd
@Paul-ow9dd 4 ай бұрын
Portrait is good for navigation as you can "see" further ahead on the map to where you're going. So not just a gimmick as many reviewers keep saying, but sure, most of the time you're likely to keep it in landscape orientation.

I actually drove this for a couple of weeks in Thailand. My Aunty was kind enough to lend it to us while we travel holiday. It's certainly an impressive car and is certainly built better than my Model S but I'd expected that being a newer build. I'd pick this over Model 3 simply because it has more physical controls. Biggest issue i had with it was the safety tech which was very intrusive also it was far cheaper than Model 3 but that could be because of the trade agreements with China.

@kira4434 that reminds me that you've mentioned the Tesla was also built in China. While I was in the States earlier this year. I've hire a Model S through Toro and the build quality,fit and finish was a disaster. It's anecdotal obviously but the Chinese built Tesla are actually better than the US built cars. There's probably better EV than Tesla but I've never seen a more dedicated fan base than Tesla so they'll be fine.

When comparing the BYD Seal to the Tesla Model 3, it's clear that the Seal outshines the competition in terms of its comprehensive and superior driver-supporting features. The days of Tesla's inflated premium pricing solely based on their brand reputation are fading, and consumers are recognizing the value offered by BYD. With its impressive feature set, the BYD Seal has won me over as my next car choice, marking a shift from Tesla in the automotive landscape.

Question about suspension. I did also get a bumpy feeling on bad roads while testing the AWD. I am no expert in this area - I just experienced it was more bounce than M3. Do you recommend do replace to a stiffer suspension or do you think current setup is best all-round solution?
@Kevin-ud2bk
@Kevin-ud2bk 4 ай бұрын
From other reviews I watched, the current suspension of Seal is good enough for daily commutes. However, one slight issue is that the rear suffers extra bounce when going through bumps or potholes due to suspension tuning. If you always have someone sitting on the second row, a stiffer suspension on the rear might be better.

28:45 - Just to correct a common mistake LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate / Lithium Iron Phosphate) are also still Lithium-Ion batteries. LFP refers to the battery chemistry. Lithium-Ion refers to the way charge is carried through the battery, Lithium Ion batteries use positively charged Lithium Ions to move the charge back and forth from anode to cathode, LFP batteries use this method.
@remakeit2628
@remakeit2628 4 ай бұрын
It's LFP versus "ternary lithium" where the "ternary" of a ternary lithium battery refers to a polymer containing three metal elements (= nickel, cobalt, manganese or aluminum) which is used as the positive electrode. Meanwhile LFP batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material, where the "PO" bond is very stable and difficult to decompose. LFP batteries are not prone to structural collapse or heat generation nor form strong oxidizing substances at high temperatures or upon overcharge or damage, thus providing enhanced safety over ternary lithium batteries.
