When comparing the BYD Seal to the Tesla Model 3, it's clear that the Seal outshines the competition in terms of its comprehensive and superior driver-supporting features. The days of Tesla's inflated premium pricing solely based on their brand reputation are fading, and consumers are recognizing the value offered by BYD. With its impressive feature set, the BYD Seal has won me over as my next car choice, marking a shift from Tesla in the automotive landscape.

@dingbatt Жыл бұрын
The most comprehensive and best review of the Seal I have seen yet. Haven’t driven one, but have sat in and played with the infotainment, etc. The interior seems more premium than my Model 3. The seats are just as comfortable, it has better ventilation/hvac, a driver’s display and hud, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, indicator stalk, real leather seats (ventilated as well as heated) and just a few more physical buttons. The displays are lower resolution than the Tesla and the likes of BMW and Mercedes and are perhaps the only thing that reduces the premium feel of the interior. The boot is probably the biggest compromise. My M3 boot is probably my second biggest ‘pinch point’ (the first being no driver’s display). The Seal boot is smaller still. There is less storage considering boot (including underfloor) and “frunk”. I believe BYD missed a trick by slavishly copying (ahem, I mean taking inspiration from) the Model 3 and not making this a liftback. Still, if practicality is the main goal, then the Seal U will be better, in the same way that the Model Y is more practical than the 3. Here in NZ, I believe the version of the Seal that will sell the best is the big battery, single motor “premium”. Apart from the extra motor and dampers (hence better performance) that the “Performance” Seal has, the Premium only misses out on a heated steering wheel and electronic child locks, but gains 50km of WLTP range. According to the BYD salesman, the active safety features can be changed to “nag only” (my terminology) rather than mechanical intervention. Whether that is something that has to be set every time is yet to be determined. Certainly here in NZ, BYD seem more receptive to making tweaks after customer feedback than other manufacturers. Just too much is absent or has been removed from the new Model 3 for me to consider it as an upgrade (driver’s display, blind spot monitoring, USS, radar, passenger lumbar support, indicator and gear selector stalks. So the Seal now becomes the front runner.

I've also driven the Tesla M3 Highland RWD which is ~4k more than the Premium and only around 5.5k less than the Performance AWD, so even though I was quite impressed with the M3, other than no stalks, no drivers display and no HUD, both of the BYD Seal version would have to be noticeably inferior to the M3 for me to choose the Tesla. Still, at this stage I haven't ruled out any of the 3 potentials YET! I really don't need the power of the Performance (who REALLY does?) but gee the Premium RWD will have to be noticeably inferior. But, not ruling out the Performance just yet. 🙂 Heart vs mind stuff as usual.

I have a brand new white AWD Seal. In response to the question about rotating the screen. I rotate the infotainment screen to portrait when using the Sat Nav (GPS) so it gives a look a little bit more view further into the journey. The acceleration on this car is like a roller coaster although the fuel consumption when driving normally is not good as the E-Niro I had before it. I looked at the BMW and Merc options at this price and they were two years old with only one year of warranty left. This means that if anything went wrong the costs would be big bucks. The BYD has six years warranty on the car and eight on the battery. I used to live in BNE and met the shadow transport minister a few years ago and asked why his party were not promoting this technology. His honest answer (I will stand up in court about this!) was they will never take off in Australia as they were driven by "poofters" !!!!! This technology is worrying governments, hence the US are interesting an 100% import tariff on new Chinese cars. This denies the masses cheap non polluting cars. Thanks for the review. I’ve had my Seal Premium for 4 weeks and driven about 2,500km. It’s a great car and the only additional criticism would be the traffic speed sign accuracy. That’s an additional thing I turn off because it gets it wrong too often. And beeps! If it just flashed the sign then that’d be adequate. The major issue though is that these safety settings don’t persist. You have to change them every time. This isn’t limited to the Seal. It’s across the board and ANCAP will be used as an excuse. Personal driver preferences need to be honoured though, and auto makers need to recognise this.

Regarding screen rotation on my Atto 3: I've used it a couple of times. The chief benefit is you can get 3 camera angles when parking instead of 2. But it's otherwise in landscape mode most of the time. I like having the option. Horizontal is better for me but there are people who prefer portrait, so even if you only rotate it once, it's worth it. Only issue is Android Auto/Caplay only work in horizontal mode, as do a couple of other apps, which is absurd.

Thanks for the review Paul. I test drove the Model 3 Highland, Seal Performance and Polestar 2, back to back today. I was hugely disappointed by the Polestar 2, far inferior and ridiculously expensive for what you get. I had seen so many glowing reviews on the Polestar 2 but my own personal assessment is that it is way overrated. I have a current model 3 and I didn't think the Highland was much different, other than better suspension (which is compromised by very soft tyres anyway) - and of course missing stalks. The winner was the Seal for my purposes and will pick up tomorrow. Much quieter than the other two cars. Despite reviewers claiming that the Highland is much quieter then the old model 3, I don't think it is (at least compared to made in china Model 3s). The only downsides to the Seal is the poorly calibrated lane keeping assistance, but I am hoping they will eventually improve this with a software update. I also prefer the one pedal driving in the Tesla, but again maybe they will add it to the Seal via a software update. That said, the Polestar has one pedal driving, but it was horrible in comparison to the smoothness of the Tesla, you are better off with it disabled in the Polestar anyway. The Tesla is also best in class for efficiency. But you have to keep all this in perspective, because the Seal will always be much cheaper to "refuel" compared to similar performing petrol cars.

It's LFP versus "ternary lithium" where the "ternary" of a ternary lithium battery refers to a polymer containing three metal elements (= nickel, cobalt, manganese or aluminum) which is used as the positive electrode. Meanwhile LFP batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material, where the "PO" bond is very stable and difficult to decompose. LFP batteries are not prone to structural collapse or heat generation nor form strong oxidizing substances at high temperatures or upon overcharge or damage, thus providing enhanced safety over ternary lithium batteries.

Will be picking up a premium version as soon as we can afford it. Excellent design and never thought I'd be buying Chinese for auto but BYD have delivered and aren't thinking idiotically country centric like Tesla removing the stalks and USS. Awful choices!

I'm waiting for my BYD Seal Premium to arrive. When you are going to test the new model 3, I would very much like for you to explain/justify how is this car street legal for Australia. For EVERYTHING you have/need to do while driving, you must take your eyes off the road!!! It is basically a mobile phone on wheels. There will be a new trend in terms of games you play with your kids while driving. "I spy with my little eye, another model 3 on the side of the road, as a result of the poor driver trying to indicate while turning". You'll know what I mean once you drive one.

Style is a corolla sedan with a porsche taycan front. One of the best looking 'normal' EVs so far. Love my model Y though. 7kw/150kw wont impact most people, but it is on the 'low' side. Many EVs havent sorted brake feel or suspension, so this isnt alone. A new set of performance tyres after purchase solves traction issues. AA/Car play is a huge win for this compared to Tesla. AWD for 10k with other features, well worth it if its in your budget, but thats Tesla money... Confusing Warranty terms, boot access, rear seat height, one pedal driving are common 'cons'for this vehicle. If it doesnt impact you, go ahead. Buy one.

I’d also be interested on your view of the Dynamic and the Seal U when it arrives. I was impressed with my test drive of the Dynamic. But would prefer the higher seat position of suv and more boot space. So looking forward to the Seal U base model if it’s around the same money as a Dynamic. We test drove the model Y. But prefer the driver screen and more conventional controls of the BYD over the minimalist approach by Tesla.

Car reviewers like to complain about rear windows not going all the way down. The only cars that go all the way down are split so that a smaller portion of the glass actually moves. It also leaves a much bigger pillar splitting the two glass pieces. Personally I would rather have windows that look good with no shut-lines. The rear windows are almost never opened anyway.

Question about suspension. I did also get a bumpy feeling on bad roads while testing the AWD. I am no expert in this area - I just experienced it was more bounce than M3. Do you recommend do replace to a stiffer suspension or do you think current setup is best all-round solution?
@Kevin-ud2bk Жыл бұрын
From other reviews I watched, the current suspension of Seal is good enough for daily commutes. However, one slight issue is that the rear suffers extra bounce when going through bumps or potholes due to suspension tuning. If you always have someone sitting on the second row, a stiffer suspension on the rear might be better.

Thanks for the review. Its looks a great car. I have a 2022 Model 3 LFP, which I'm happy with but certainly the Seal is worth a look. I haven't driven a Seal yet, but have looked around and sat in one for a while. It will depend on how you like your interiors but for me coming from a Tesla the interior felt a bit cluttered (I guess I must like the "clean" look after all) - although I would get used to it. However I would miss the access to all the Superchargers as I have nothing but great experiences with them here in NZ (as opposed to our public network, where its not uncommon to find broken or busy chargers).

Am about to dip my toe in the water with an EV, hybrids are just a waste. Thanks for a very practical review of a stunning 1st effort by the manufacturer ( as far as I know) of this model. Who would have thought top Euro finish, and Porsche like performance for around 70K ? Maybe I am a luddite, however, to an extent, would prefer to have more manual controls over air conditioning, drive mode than having to diver into menus- certainly not all that safe when driving! However, this has way, way more performance than most urban based drivers will ever need, given congested nature of east coast capital city roads, but would love to get out of the big smoke every now and then and feel those G forces mash me back into the seat when vehicle set on whatever performance mode the manufacturer may have dialled in at the time. Great review.
