We bought an old mini bike frame and two 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engines, and we're off to Go Power Sports headquarters to modify our chassis, get our engines running, and assemble our twin engine mini bike in time for our subscriber meet up the next day.
Thanks for Watching!

Use a much larger sprocket tying the two engines together with a spring tensioned idler to keep the tension so the chain isn't flopping all over, perhaps a heavier chain, then put a torque converter on it! Regardless, I love how you guys stay the same regardless how much money is around for things. Still making stuff any Joe could do with a welder and some parts. Love it! Look forward to your new videos every week!

I think it'd help If both engines were syncronized in relation to the power stroke of the piston. I m guessing that right now that one engine hits the power stroke after the other and it creates a massive torque differential through that chain when the other engine is in the compression stroke for ex.
@Acoustic_Theory
@Acoustic_Theory 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, phasing between the two engines will break that chain in time. But for now "it'll be fine".
@jordannicot6402
@jordannicot6402 6 жыл бұрын
it will also break the engines, that was my first thought. having 2 motors firing at different times is not good for the mechanical parts I'm sure. But it'll be fine.

Why not use a belt between the two engine's the one already was setup for a belt? Weld a sprocket onto the pulley then the belt will allow them to sync

You should put a clutch on the front engine, put the sprocket side in so it can align with the rear engine sprocket, I think it will work better and also you will only have to start the front engine.

I was thinking figure out the compression stroke on each and set them to 180deg off of each other so it runs like a real 2 cyl! Maybe also a 2 into 1 exhaust? Two smaller headers feeding a double sized? (more cosmetic than performance).

Most 'Franken' thing about it is the gearing ratio of the chains... looks like about 6 or 7:1 for a '4 HP engine'... but only needs about 1.5 - 2:1 for 8 + 8 = 16 HP torque !!! ... Would feel like super strong '1st gear only' acceleration... then no shift into 2nd available... The engine braking from letting off the gas would prolly slide the rear wheel... This thing also needs #40 chain instead of lightweight #35 'karting' chain...

Use a belt to connect the two, that way theres a slight amount of slip if the motors dont agree with each other. Make it kind of like a tiller with a tensioner pulley and when they're both idling you can flip the tensioner pulley to connect their power together

It tensioned the belt 😂 Keep the engine speed low and help it off the line and get the belt locked as soon as you can before you feed the power.

I saw that chain between the motors dancing and I thought, even with synchronized motors, one is gonna fire first and it's all fun and games until someone loses a femoral artery. I dunno about this as a solution get the motors timed as close as you can and short the spark plugs together or trigger the magneto primaries together off one motor.

You should link them with a belt, leave the belt a little loose and then put a pulley on a lever to tighten it when you get one running, then the running engine will turn the second engine over starting it, just make sure that you make room for the hand clutch to cam over so you don't have to hold it. I've done it and it works great.

Looks like you guys all had a blast and good job on the quick build. I was wondering if maybe the engine power pulses were working against each other causing that sync chain to go bananas. Seems that it would be hard to ever smooth that out very much even with additional idler sprockets, but I could be wrong. Maybe stagger the engines left to right and use two rear sprockets, two chains, and the two clutches. That way each engine could be independently connected to the rear axle and they could be started separately and use the clutches to smooth the power between the two. I'm just thinking is all my friends. Again great job and I look forward to what you come up with next.

I can feel for both of them, I'm more of a clutter and chaos guy myself, but I grew up learning to do stuff by helping my dad. He'd learned courtesy of the USAF, and at 21 was responsible for keeping a multi million dollar nuclear armed bomber ready for a mission that thankfully never came. Dad was always particular about how stuff was done, and later on after dealing with projects that had been jury rigged I came to appreciate his way of doing things. Yes, it takes time, but if it prevents a problem down the road it's usually time well spent.

I think you'd have better luck if the engines were phased based on their firing order because they're linked together. Since they're 4-strokes you could have one fire and the other on the intake stroke or have them both on the same stroke at the same time. Since it's just a chain that connects them, you can adjust the timing to see which way works best. Either way, it's a rad build!

I believe putting a clutch on the front engine and a chain tension for the engine to engine chain would solve the chain slap, binding and give the ability to start the front engine first and the second engine next instead of having to start them both at the same time. It's my theory but trying it out will tell the tale. Still a pretty interesting outside the box build 👍👌.

Ike, John, have you considered running the engines in parallel (but separate) via 2 clutches? One clutch per engine, 2 chains to the rear axle (2 separate axle sprockets), front engine shifted to the right ~1 inch so the chain will clear/pass the rear engine. This way, you could start/run the engines separate. Let me know what you think.
@CarsandCameras

We're trying to get our hands on clutches with two sprockets on them. We can run one regular clutch on the forward engine, then a dual sprocket clutch on the rear (one sprocket tying the two together, and the other sprocket leading to the jackshaft). That's the plan!

Isaac it'll be fine understandable, Ike. We know you guys were on a tight schedule. What I was meaning is all the projects I've done as well as friends, it seems the littlest thing you ignore, thinking, ah, it's no big deal...will come back with a vengence..a buddy put his rider engine together without waiting for me to help assemble it, good guy, but knows just enough about tools and engines to be dangerous. I got there, the engine was put together, and running. His wife was cutting grass. He looked at me proudly and said, see? I didn't need a hotshot mower mechanic, I did it myself....just then, there was a loud CLANK from the mower and it stopped. The rod broke from the rod bolts coming loose. I asked him, where's the rod bolts retainer? (It's a thin piece of steel that goes over the rod bolts that you been the tab on it over the bolt to lock it in place) he dug on his bench and held it up and said, this? I didn't think it was important..🤔🙄

dave1135 well that's a good story but that's not skipping a lil thing, that's an idiot with a wrench. We all know THAT guy. Mines my neighbor. But Ike was right, look at the next shot. That frame had been lovingly gone over till it was perfect instead of skipping a lil ugly weld and finishing the important stuff. That probably cost em 30 mins right there, not to mention the bickering over stupid shit and all the other little nitpicking wastes of time. Ike gets shit done. Plain and simple. That RBW dweeb is antisocial and opinionated with super thin skin. I'm proud of Ike for not laying him out, can't say I'd have the same restraint. And for the record, that gear broke cause someone cut a keyway in an already thin gear, you know, instead of welding some strength into it. 🤔 food for thought.

You should call it "the buddys-bike", because its a two-seater and you need a buddy to start it. Nice project, I love it!

What if you changed the joint chain with a serpentine belt? That way there would be less of a shock transferred to the second engine

I think its badass! The only thing id do different is put a clutch on both engines so they dont have to be timed perfectly together.

I think you’re being too hard on yourselves. It’s not like you had a plan to work from. No one knows exactly what sprocket or throttle cable set up to use on a 2 engine mini bike. Can’t google that. Good job fellas.

FINALLY someone that does not want to weld "replacement" parts on, please take the time to make the sprockets removable, it's so painful to watch people welding parts that will require frequent changing in the future.
