We turned a dirt bug mini bike (similar to a doodlebug mini bike) that we bought for $80 at the flea market into a drag mini bike! We installed a jr dragster front wheel and tire, a go power sports live axle kit, and we built a tillotson 236cc racing engine.
Thanks for Watching!

Hey guys @carsandcameras! To prep a methanol motor for storage you don't need to clean out the carburetor. Before the last oil change, shut your fuel off and then pull the fuel line. Start the engine up.. once it starts pulling the remaining methanol in the the line, submerge the fuel line into a bottle of Marvel's Mystery Oil. When the oil starts being pulled into the carburetor, give it slightly higher RPMs so that your engine doesn't die. It will run very boggy until all of the fuel is completely gone from the carburetor. Now your carb and all fuel components plus your cylinder and crankcase have all been lubricated for storage all in one swoop! Hope this helps!

Well, it was made as an upper cylinder lubricant, back when oils didn't have our modern detergents, lube modifiers, viscosity control, etc. It's not necessary anymore, but the storage idea is great!

I don't want to put a damper on your beautiful dad engine building moment, but it is critical to have the dowel pins installed when checking your clearances. It is far less important when using that awesome cnc machined cover, but with a factory cover the dowels ARE the locator and the cheesy stock covers have huge loose fitting bolt holes. Otherwise a spectacular teaching job and a wicked sounding engine. Hang on tite!

I love these traditional style, old school minibikes. Like I had over 50 years ago! Small frame, small wheels, no suspension, tall skinny bars, and in the old days a 3hp Tecumseh or Briggs. Not the monster engines they make now!

I had no idea mini bikes were on the rise. I'm 55 and in 1979 in 5th grade I used to go to the library nearly daily to look at the book, "Minibikes" and dream of owning one. I ended up buying a Honda XR80 and I was the coolest kid (to me, even though I was still a total dork). EDIT : WOW $80 for a running minibike !

In 2019 i bought an exact same stock doodlebug in brand new condition for 250. It instantly got a 212 HF and a torque converter and i was hooked (again) as it had been over 40 years since my last mini. In no time at all, well by the next summer, it goes 8 50s @74 with relative ease. These are so simple and fun. Wheelie bars are a must for cvt torque-a-verter minis if you wanna go quick. Mine carries the front for at least the first 100 feet on the bars. Had a hard time at the track at first trying not to red light beause the tiny front wheel was going up and over the beams. Eventually I figured out how deep to stage and figured it out. I later built an identical doodlebug with nearly the same mods but it runs a hilliard inferno centrifugal. Very interesting testing both minis with only difference being the clutch and drive system

Actually,if one nicks the cranks rod journal that crank is still usuable as long as the nick is recessed, or emery emory cloth smoothed and polished back up as a slight depression is fine as the crank and bearings do not actually touch one another when the engine is running.. Thin layer of oil separates them and all you've done is create a place where extra oil will fill in... I've seen and built many engines with cranks that had marks and they've lasted 1000s of passes,laps,or 100s of 1000s of miles... Small nicks,or scratches yes,but not 1/4" by 1/2" trenches...

I see near the end you swapped a set of stock mega moto style handlebars. As hard as ive tried to make them work, just can't seem to get drag bars to work on a doodlebug. They hit your knees and put you in the most awkward riding position ever which won't even allow you to make a pass. Both my drag doodlebugs have either the one piece fork bars like stock or a set off an old bmx bike from the 80s. Ive even tried flat drag handlebars with 6 inch risers and nope just can't get them to work. This whole build is right up my alley boys. Been watching this channel since early 2017 and love how y'all have kept the same vibe over the years.

You don’t have an oil pump so Ike’s plan to go with assembly lube is definitely the way to go, btw boys I may be wrong here but “lapping” flywheel is for making sure the press fit is exact, not for the binding effect exactly, we do the same thing at the machine shop to make a balancer fit, we hone it slightly so press isn’t too tight or too loose, just my 2 cents
@WyFoster
@WyFoster 3 ай бұрын
The rod literally goes below the oil level in the crankcase. Assembly lube is pretty much pointless on these engines. You don't have to wait for oil to full up passages. It's instantly splashed on the first revolution. Just saturate the parts with the oil you'd use and you're good to go.

Hey ike, around 1:31:50 when a fresh engine gets hard to pull ive found the valves need to be lashed again to whatever spec you wanna run, especially with a little heat in the motor. Hot lash is even more important than cold lash. If you run the valves i bet it pulls like butter...lets see what happens...

I watch these mostly for entertainment but like to see you get more involved. I've learned over time to use an old main bearing that I grind down the od of of for easy removal and install to use for test fitting and 1st assembly of almost everything. Then I don't worry much about dirt and dust early on. I also don't put rings on.at this point - that lets me feel binding or tight spots easier. Then I disassemble everything, deburr, everything, remove bearing and scrub block in hot soapy water multiple times!!! Wipe bore with oil, install new bearing and seal and assemble. Once assembled put oil in and roll motor around every day or so and again when installing and you'll know oil is everywhere. Also, my theory on push rods is rocker should be level with head, and tip centered on valve tip at 1/2 of valve travel. That makes for the least stress on valve train in my eyes. Cool video!

I used to be super careful with h engine builds like that, though that was before i had pulled multiple siezed motors out of the junkyard broke em loose and had them run for years without being opened up, they arent as sensitive to dust and dirt as you would think, bow of course its not ideal to run a ton of shavings or dirt through a newly built engine but it also isnt going to trash it like some engine builder lead you to believe either.

Assembly lube for a mock up is a bad idea. It will attract debris and may keep you from seeing an issue. A dab of clay on that counterweight and rotate and it will show you how much clearance you have. A no noise check will only tell you it isn't hitting but heat and flex may allow contact in use. Figure a temp change etc and check if there's enough. I do like the "hands on tech" format and style of this video.

It's always surprising how well am little 2 stroke can run. I wish the 49cc pocket bike engines had a robust trans on them like the bike kits... They have a flywheel fan cooling them and the bike kits tend to get hot. Otherwise, an eBay 49cc (40cc ish) engine is only $43 and there can be mods done to learn on. I have one, runs ok but needs a bigger jet out the box

Another things that's important to discuss when building an engine is ring gap. Metal expands when it get's hot and the last thing you want is for your rings to bind because they got to big for the bore. Most engine manufacturers have a rating for how large the gap should be which takes a lot of the guess work out of the job.
