CarsandCameras - Ike & John... been a subscriber for a long time, and sure enjoy your videos.... brings back lots of memories for myself, as I worked in a Go-Kart dealership starting when I was only 12 years old, back in the "heyday" and golden era of Go-Karting (early through late mid -1960's - until I went to VN). I raced on the dealer team, with an 800 Series Go-Kart (manufacturers name, from Azuza,CA.) running in class C-Open with twin "Mac" MC-10's on alcohol on "short" track road race circuits would do 70 - 75mph with "short gearing". Had a Yamaha chassis with a single K-100 Yamaha 2 cycle kart engine (with clutch) that was also capable of 70+ on a "long track" - and that was bone stock in the mid - 1980's. Tried a 250cc "Super Kart" (Shifter) on a 1.75 mile endurance race circuit and after just 2 "trial" (re; getting use to) laps, my first timed lap was 116.4mph... in "experienced" hands, it was capable of over 130 mph... as demonstrated to me by the owner. My wife said... "if you buy that, I'm gone"...... I should have gone with my "gut" and bought it!.... that was in 1983, just before I bought the Yamaha. You fellows Really need to do a 2 cycle on one of your karts.... preferably the chassis in this video, and you might consider a Rotax "shifter".. which you can obtain in either 80cc, 125cc (Very Popular class) and 250cc. even the "little" 80cc will very quicky get you up into the 85+ mph range and faster, depending of course on gearing and where you're running it. I also drag raced for 20 years (front engined dragsters of my own, and drove a back motored Top Alcohol dragster [TA/D] for a team).... and I have an "old school" tip for you in regards to the exhaust pipe on this 200cc engine and looking at the "coloring" of the tube. Take a spray can of Flat White paint, and paint TWO stripes down the length of the tube - Starting at about 2.5 inches from the header, to the outlet of the header pipe an then AFTER it dries, make a couple of "hard" (full throttle) passes with it of EQUAL distances, cutting it "clean" from FULL Throttle (clutch disengaged/out of gear and Engine shut OFF) at the end of each "pass". It "may" take Three passes like that, but you will see where the paint will "burn off" at one particular point on the header tube... Cut the pipe OFF right at the ENGINE SIDE of the burn mark... that will be your ideal length for your engine in it's "Current" state of tune. The burn point on the paint/header pipe, indicates where the point of sound "reversion" is within the pipe, which in essence is creating a "dam" or point of restriction to your exhaust flow, which in turn is creating extra heat at that point, causing the paint to burn off - quicker than it will eventually from time and heat along the rest of the paint stripes, if they do at all. Sound waves DO create restrictions within even the best of exhaust headers... by knowing exactly where in the header tube the point of reversion is and then cutting it there, will negate the negative effects of it. In automotive situations.... Glass pack mufflers are the Worst "modification" one can do... I've spent many hours in years past on my own dynamometer, testing many numerous types of "mufflers" on a "mule" engine to document the effects of each in regards to hp and torque outputs.... in Every test, and regardless of the manufacturer, Glass Pack mufflers were the most restrictive in terms of reducing horsepower outputs.... compared to Factory Stock mufflers even.... in one case, the glass packs tested (from a "well known" brand) produced 28 horsepower LESS than the factory mufflers that were originally designed for the "mule" engine I was using on the dyno.... a hp 327ci small-block Chevy, 4 bolt mains factory rated originally at 340hp. That shows how much effect that sound waves can have on the power output of ANY engine, large and small, and why it's important to negate those effects as much as possible. Just so you know, I formally studied engine design for 4 years at one of the top-ranked schools of the era in the nation.... and all these things come into consideration. Yes, I know people will say.. "but engines are different now" compared to the 1960's.... well, NO... there are Not. They're still reciprocating engines using the same 4 or 2 cycle principles as then... the only thing that has changed is the way fuel delivery is controlled (as well as valve action control in many cases), and the means of plug firing (gas engines - in automotive & marine applications especially), but the same basic "engine" is still at the core...... and the "selling" to the public as to "why" the switch to electronic controls on automotive engines.... was a Complete Lie... it had Nothing to do with "cleaner emissions" (getting rid of the lead anti-knox compounds was enough to accomplish that).... but it Did (and Does) have Everything to do with...... well, lets just say... "you can't DE-mobilize (Stop) people from driving their vehicles (re; Control people's moving about at will)... even as the result of an EMP, IF... their driving NON-Electronically controlled vehicles. Get the picture? The 4 strokes are a lot of fun - but if you Really want to try goose bump "Quick".... the 2 strokes are definitely "where it's at..... UNLESS, you build something like a (minimum) 600cc 4 cycle motorcycle engine powered Kart, or perhaps powered by something Really wild, like a Yamaha VMAX, or for some Real "seat of the pants" brute force torque... an 1800cc Honda VTX engine and transmission in a Kart (the 1300 VTX sounds more like a Harley as it utilizes a single pin crank)!! Our Karting friends in Europe seem to love putting High horsepower motorcycle/transmission combo's into go-karts... youtube is full of videos from "over there".... wild to say the least!!.... definitely capable of "putting your heart up into your throat" as we use to say. PS: a nice little "healthy" 2 stroke in a mini bike is also LOTS of fun... will definitely give you a "rush". ; ) One more for you to consider... one that I've thought about, but never did.... build a front (front engined chassis "work" better with horsepower levels Below about 1,000 to 1,200 hp) engine dragster with a 2 cycle outboard marine engine for power.... either a V-6.... or IF you really have the guts.... a V8 OMC (parent company for Evinrude & Johnson) released a carbureted 3.6 liter 2 cycle V8 rated (supposedly) at 275 hp, although dyno tests done by owners and independent shops were consistently showing 300+, and in 1988 they released a new 2 cycle 4 liter "300hp" beast (which dynos proved to be Very "underrated")..... and they Loved to be run at WOT (wide open throttle)... perfect for drag racing!!.... but, were "heavy" for a 2 cycle at 555 lbs... nearly the same as a small block Chevy V8, but the acceleration factor was beyond belief!! The worlds record for an outboard powered boat was set in 1989 by a 3.5 litre version of the "275" hp version V8 that was tuned to 10,000 rpms on Alcohol.... at a speed of 176.556 mph!!.... and that record was still "standing" in March of 2014 (25 years after it was set!).... which was the last time I checked it. Anyway, guys.... you two keep having fun and sharing all your doing with all of us "out here".... I keep looking forward to whatever your next "build" is.... you're even rekindling the past "youthful fires" within me to possibly build one more "fun and crazy" go-kart or mini-bike while I still have the ability to do so. Thanks for all the memories, you bring to mind for myself, and All the "older kids" like myself.... and helping us to "relive" our younger days, when we built things, just as you two are, now. .

Your right about the aerodynamics. Since the intake is on the rear of the engine you might have some negative pressure there so the engine isn't drawing in enough air. Try a scoop to pull in more air from around the engine to direct air into the intake. It might help achieve your goal. Wouldn't hurt to try. Also try putting a couple more pounds of air in the tires for less rolling resistance but it might make the cart a bit more bouncy.

I raced dirt track go cart some years ago. I raced unlimited class. My motor had extras and burned alcohol it had to be based on a 5hp motor. Well the motors cost $800 it put out 14.5 hp. You could run 2 seasons on it, after the first year you just had to put new rings in it and hone the cylinder. After 2nd year rebuild. Racing on a 1/8 mile track at a fair grounds the sheriff was clocking us and said just before slowing for the 3rd corner he clocked us at 65mph. If it hadn't been being in a bad accident i'd still be racing even though it was 20 years ago.

Why because its a chevy motor it’s easy to fix and the parts don’t cost much and you can get a lot of power out of it
@nathanbutler82406 жыл бұрын
Lance Trombly i agree its cheap and easy but at that point why build a mini dragster and why not a full size front engine dragster at that point. When all you gotta do is put a small turbo rotory that would fit there mini dragster and get 3x the power with gears

Couple of thoughts. You already have a fairing of sorts, what would it hurt to give it a try? Also maybe a 2 foot wide strip of sheet plastic to tuck under the nose of the fairing and reduce windage on your legs and lower torso? It would be nice to find out what the answer to question of how much aero effects at speed. After a last top speed run, Re-gear the cart for the 1/8 mile. Probably would make sense to get the shifter set up a little better but something to ponder. Same gearing for the 1/8 mile would be great fun on a kart track as well I bet.
