These Z-50's remind me of summer camp. Mini bike riding was an option that I did every summer for about 5 yrs. We also rode Trail 70's as we progressed. My last summer there I got chosen to go on a mini bike overnight camping trip. We rode out into the woods, raised hell on the trails and overall had a blast! Great memories from Camp Bernie!

Man... I got a bike just like that red '83 for christmas in 95? 96? Mine had a black seat though. I was 5 or 6 years old, I can't remember. But, I do remember seeing that beside the tree that morning with that beautiful red paint shining and it being one of the happiest moments in my life. The excitement of wanting to ride it but having to open everything else first and let my mom and dad put me in warm clothes lol. Brings back so many memories. I had a white one just like that '99 on the video too. Awesome video guys. Loved it.

You guys are great. As an old motorcyclist I can tell you points were replaced with electronic ignition on Japanese motorcycles after 1977. I once had a 1977 Yamaha XS750 triple which had points. All models after that had electronic ignition, so I'm confident points disappeared on motorcycles of all sizes not long after. ECM's were cheap even then, a silicon controlled rectifier.

An old tech once asked me, after watching me work on a stuck engine... He said " did you put atf or diesel in it?" Very serious like. I laughed, and shrugged it off. Later he says ... " Atf or diesel in the cylinders. That'll get her free.."... Soaked in diesel for 72 hours and it freed pretty easy. The rings loosened up, it smoked beautifully even after an oil change. That little one cyl. Honda ran for two years no prob till sold.

Thank you for refreshing my memories of my first bike. It was an early 70's Trail 70 that my dad built out of 2 s...crap bikes he found at the flea market. After nearly a year of slamming the 2 together, my first ride nearly landed me in the pond. I got back on it (after the shakes wore off) and then he couldn't keep me off of it. A good trick if you have rusty valves and would like to try to revive it is to put a leak down detector on it roll the engine to bdc with both valves closed and use a dead blow hammer to rap on the top of the valves. Jaring the valves knocks the rust off and the air being forced into the cylinder pushes the loose rust out of the engine. As a vintage bike mechanic I have used and had great luck with this method several times.

familiar sounds.. I love it. I have a similar blue bench 'chevy red' honda monkey I got when I was 11-12 yrs old. always takes a few kicks to get it started when it sits for a long time, but it always runs. good engines. nice find and a steal for what you paid, even if they're a bit stripped.. a good one can sell for 4000€ in my country
@DecibelAlex
@DecibelAlex 4 жыл бұрын
a bit of history.. I've read somewhere the honda monkey was made for mine workers for transport between the barracks and the mines, since the 4 stroke runs so quiet and bike is so small, it was an ideal form of tranport also in the mines. Air pilots also had a 125cc engine monkey which could quickly take them to the airfield when necessary. (btw you can get brand new 125cc engines from china and they are cheap as dirt 😉😉)

They did qualify the Z-50 in the video as Honda's smallest "street legal" trail bike, but in the description above, they write, that it's Honda's smallest trail bike. The Z-50 was not Honda's smallest trail bike. That would be the QA-50, which was a 2 speed and had no headlight or taillight, so It wasn't street legal kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWfUc3adrpqWmtk . It had a different engine and frame, than the Z-50, although it was still a 50cc 4 stroke. I believe; they made it in the early to mid-1970's. ...I had one as a 48 pound runt 9 year old in 1973! I was too short to reach the ground with my feet on the Z-50, so Dad bought me a QA-50. I was an unruly child, but the belt and hickory switch didn't work on me, so Dad made a deal with me, that if I behaved for a year and didn't get kicked out of school and work during the Summer & after school, he'd buy me a mini-bike. I kept my end of the deal and so did Dad.
