We bought three legendary 2 stroke Kawasaki KX80 dirt bikes. These 2 stroke dirt bikes were designed for teenage motocross riders, and they still pack a punch! The 80cc 2 stroke 5 speed engines give the KX80 a top speed of 75 miles per hour. I bought three of these bikes for $1000, but they are all in pieces! Today we figure out if we can put one together and ride!

I grew up on KX-80s. I still think they might be the most fun all around dirt bike for general around the home / shop ripping around for fun. It's plenty powerful and fast and the bigger bikes just weigh so much and are so much larger you dno't really need all that just to rip around the yard. It's the perfect balance. We had a pw80 too that was a lot of fun. Small bikes are fun.

Ripping around their yard, they should have at least a 125cc, well Ike anyways, not sure about the other two. I had a CR250 up til a few years ago and that was a fun bike but, I suppose a little CR80 would be kind fun just to mess around with.

Took you a minute to find the powerband! 👀🤣 Don't underestimate a 2smoker, but ride them gears out until it coughs and splutters. You will have a lot of fun with more engines like these!

Love the 2 stroke content. And i just have to say: it is so much fun watching you guys so excited over a tiny 80cc engine. But i see why, that old crusty 80cc engine has more power then the most over built predator type engines you guys use on everything.. I am really hoping you do a go kart build with one of those engines. You could race a stock kx 80 engine against a stock predator engine, or even a fully built predator engine and see how they stock up against each other.

And according to my experience a 2 stroke is much more reliable I have a 250 ktm sx 2007 model that has never given me problems it always starts on demand even if it sat more than a year. I cant say the same of my 100cc crf honda that is a 2012 model, that bike has always been a struggle to get going if I didnt take it for a ride in a while.

It’s not the older engine.. like they stated it’s the engine from the newer model bike that was also in pieces because it was being used as a parts bike most likely - hence the exhaust/carb clearance issues that’s probably main reason for all the random stuff cut off of it by the previous owner/seller to make the newer 80cc engine fit into the old style frame… The older 80cc engine that came in it originally was probably clapped out or blown up a long long time ago & if still around would most Likely needed to be rebuilt so they just bought a donor 80cc or two for extra parts that way they could save money & have one older looking model frame/plastics with a newer engine with more availability parts wise lots of people do this now a days the parts market is brutal or all cheaply made Chinese crap 💩 …

As soon as I seen the silver kx frame and the plastics for it I called it was 87. I had one when I was a kid that was passed down from my brother. The really awesome thing about the 87's was kawasaki offered a 105cc big bore kit as an optional add on, mine had it and it was a ripper!!!!

yea it is about time. Been asking for a 2 stroke dirt bike engine build ever since they started there videos way back in John`s parents garage. It is so fun to think that the little KX 80 engine has more power then there fully built predator type engines. This video brings memories of fully restoring my 86 kx80 at 10-11 years old with my dad. That was my real in depth learning experience on how engines and suspension works. We did a top end, split the cases and did crank bearings and seals but it was my dads first time ever opening up a bottom end so we ended up rolling the seals at first, then we ordered the wrong size seals and realized after we had already opened it, then rolled new seals again, then we finally got it after using a press. My dad taught me how to strip, prime, and paint, we painted the frame because some guy painted it this weird blue color. We rebuilt the clutch on it and the water pump. Also cleaned up the carb and put a new intake boot. We put new handlebars, grips, levers, and kill switch. That gas tank was so old and whitened that I wet sanded the whole thing for probably around 30 hours. It got a whole new plastic kit and graphics. New tires. New seat cover. Got a whole new rear shock. We painted the whole engine semi gloss black. We rebuilt the front master cylinder. Theres probably a whole another list of things we have done. Nice video guys.

Cool beans, I found an early 80's KX80 air cooled I think 1981 on Craigslist about 15yrs ago & fixed it up with parts I found on eBay. I also got a mint condition complete spare engine on eBay sold in many small pieces by a seller on EBay. Back then some ppl would start out an auction for only a penny with no reserve. IIRC I got almost every single engine part for only a penny each because nobody else bidded on them! Of course he overcharged me a bit on shipping but what's funny is he sells a lot of motorcycle stuff on eBay & that was the last time you'll ever see him list parts for only a penny & no reserve LOL 🤪. Cool powerful little dirt bike perfect for a youngster learning how to ride. Lots of fun. Thanks for sharing... 👊

these were great bikes and built tougher than the makes of bikes in this size category , my buddies son raced one of the KX80's when he was younger and did really well his first season racing without any sponsor, just his dad, uncle and me helping wherever possible, he even got a 3rd place finish one time, he's was so pumped , him being a skinny kid worked to his advantage enabling him to keep up pretty good with the other kids, he's about Charles age and the same build and just bought his daughter her first quad, I think its a 50cc or so , she just loves to ride it and always looks for puddles to rip through, it's a blast to watch her ride, 6 yrs old and no fear, here dad says she rides with reckless abandon, can hardly wait for the next video with these KX 80's, wonder if you could still find one of the big bore kits that Kawasaki use to offer, boy the would make yard kart a ripper 👍

I've had bikes and wheelers from big reds to MX bikes currently have a modded raptor 660 and the most crazy little machine I've ever ridden was a 2010ish bills piped and jetted cr85... I've owned a ridden older 80cc MX bikes and they went good but that 85 was bonkers! When it got up on that bills pipe it went berserka... I looked up the specs after and it was rated a 28hp!! That's with the oem pipe too. That amount of power in a tiny bike like that just says hang on! I had no problem with my 200lbs. That bills pipe is tuned for a very violent powerband nothing... nothing... EVERYTHING! Take that amount of power in a tinsey little bike felt crazy. My first YZ80 had tops 12-14hp new so this cr85 had double the HP of that old YZ. To bad all MX 2 strokes aren't built with the same cc to HP ratio as the 85s, a 250 would be 60ish HP vs 48.

Looks like it could maybe use a set of rings as well as that clutch fixed. 2 strokes smoke pretty good but that looked a little excessive.
@jjhack3r
@jjhack3r Жыл бұрын
Bad rings DO NOT cause smoking in 2 strokes. Sometimes crank seals can go bad and let gear oil into the engine which will cause smoking. Only 4 stroke engines smoke from having bad rings, since 4 strokes have oil in the crankcase and 2 strokes do not.

Considering I grew up on 2 stroke racing bikes I can say for sure excess blowby and excess exhaust smoke can certainly be caused by warn rings. If it really were the crank seal making it smoke that bad I don't think it would be idling as well and have plenty of lean running symptoms.

@@jdmjedi777 Exactly, 100% it could be. I think in this case he mixed it too rich with some cheap gas station oil. They are not the ones to run any good stuff and wonder why things run like crap. Everything they use is overpriced stuff sold next to the hotdogs inside the Mini Marts. 😂

@@jdmjedi777 It would be a good time to do a 105 big bore kit on the KX 80 engine if they are going to do a top-end rebuild.

I guess you'd never consider buying a Harley road bike huh? I just hake my head at people who think a clunky old unbalanced 1940's agricultural engine that revs to about 2000 rpm could possibly be "fun".

I used to ride dirt bikes as a kid, and a few years ago I got one of these in my shop to try to fine tune the carb for high altitude, and it was absolutely nuts how much power these little monsters make. I'm sure the liquid cooling helped a bunch, since all my old dirt rides were air-cooled back in the 70's and early 80's.😁👍
