Cars, Costs and Technology It would be hard to do but I likely wouldn't drive it a lot in the winter. I'd probably take it out to get it up to temp but only short drives near my house. It would rarely see salt, if ever. If it were summer I'd daily drive the hell out of one. I swear I would teabag a set mousetrap if it meant I could own one, especially the ZR1. The Grand Sport is more my style though. This is coming from a Ford(mostly) guy.

I daily drove FB series 1 and 2 first generation RX-7s throughout the 1990’s and those have less interior space than most Corvette’s so daily driving a Vette is like having a Caddy with two seats, wait, there’s actually Cadillacs with two seats as well….but you get the point lol!

I have a 2016 black stingray convertible, LOVE IT, and its my everyday car. I'm a great grandmother, and my thinking is, what the heck am I saving it for!! I have 2 Vetts, one in Fla and one in NJ. Never sees snow, and not much rain, both garaged. But to your points: Rides like a dream, no rough at all. Shoppinh, get creative, on a Costco run, just strap those 24 rolls of toilet paper in the passenger seat, and buckle up baby! Not crazy about not having a gas cap, but "deal with it"!! Geezz!! No CD player, but Best Buy has a small portable one that plugs into AUX, sits in cup holder if you remove spacer. All in, under $30. A bit nervous about NOT having a spare tires, so get roadside assistance coverage and have it towed, not a big deal. We all have cell phones, and Sirius call for help button. Get a grip folks, ifz not the end of the world. In my humble opinion, its the best "fill in the blank" car I've ever driven. I love it, other Vett ownerz always gjve you tbe secret handshake, so much fun. From a Motown girl, and GM family, also a military family, NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING smacks of Made in tbe USA like a Corvette, especially red ones. We are not promised tomorrow, and I learned that the hard way when I became ill and couldn't afford such cars anymore. I could of enjoyed those cars, but I was scared something would happen to them. I never put over 3, 000 Miles on any of them. Now, this 09 C6 gets the heck driven out of it. I thank the good Lord I am able to own another one. Use your vehicles people. These Vettes were made to enjoy. (And tick Mustang driver's off. Let em go. The cops will get em, trust me. See it daily)

I don't fear snow...It's the salt. I got winter tires on my Z06 to help it drive in the cold, and grip in the snow, but the next day when they throw salt down, she's staying at home. Especially with all the undertray's we have with the tiny gaps, salt can sneak up, and then get stuck and rust it from inside out, even underbody washes can't save you from that. I'm considering unbolting them for winter, so I can spray the underbody easier.

I had a '65 convertible as my daily driver when I was in the military from 1972 through 1976. Driving from Illinois to Pennsylvania and back every weekend, I learned a lot about that car. While I felt every crack in the road, the 565 mile one way trip left me feeling just fine at the end of it. When I eventually had a Ford Galaxy, it was more "comfortable" to sit in and go 5 miles, but after the aforementioned 565 mile trip I was physically exhausted. Then, the parts availability is another good point. I once had a fuel pump fail in Indiana and all I had to do was go to a normal parts store and get one. Had I been driving a contemporary Jaguar, Mercedes, Lotus or Porsche, I might still be waiting for the part. Damn, I wish I had that car back now.

Totally agree about foreign cars and their “prestige”. Personally, I prefer good old American muscle. Parts aren’t as proprietary or expensive as say on a Mercedes for example. Interior is also usually more spacious on American vehicles versus foreign cars. To be quite honest, I think when I see a Corvette, Hellcat, Shelby GT350, or ZL1 I feel more excited than when I see an AMG Benz, M series Bimmer, or Audi S Series.

Now I am biassed as I have won SCCA autocross championships with the car, which was built out by Dick Gulstrand. I will say that there is not beating the sound of a Ferrari at full song. Shutting down new Mustangs, Camaros and Mopars with a 21 yo vette never gets old. It is my daily ride. The c7 is a 2014 z51 Lime Rock Green automatic convertible. Unlike my C5, it is very civilized. I love both vettes for different reasons and uses. As a young man I had a C3 1969 convertible. I still appreciate the simplicity of the C3's. However the C5, 6 and 7 are my favorites. The progression of heritage in the body lines is so evident and gracefully beautiful in my opinion.

I’m daily driving a 1987, great car, great visibility. Ever get some idiot try to stop you from being able to change lanes or get on the highway? Doesn’t matter to something that accelerates or decelerates as fast as any Corvette. It’s also pretty good on gas when you drive it slowly (or even if you just keep up with traffic, which is not fast for the vette, but everyone else is flooring it) Problems with my car would be ride height, noise level (not really the exhaust, but the wind is really loud on this car) and the occasional 30+ year old car issue, old wires, old vacuum lines and such.

Great video. 👍 I needed the back seat with a kiddo to haul around, so I bought the SS sedan... LS3 and a Tremec 6-speed manual in a decent chassis with some Corvette tricks like the magnetorheological dampers. Mine gets daily driven except in active snow. I have a Silverado farm truck for those duties. But yeah, if you’re worried about keeping the car in nice shape, go for the full paint protection film treatment. My whole car is wrapped in Xpel, and 3M and a couple others also make great products for that. It’s pricey to do the whole car, but when you’ve got $50k tied up in a car, it brings great peace of mind. It’s a relief every time I hear gravel ping off the bodywork to know the paint is protected and all I have to do is give the car a bath and it’s immaculately shiny again. Winter driving: lots of RWD European cars get DD’d in winter and do just fine. BMWs and Mercs were almost exclusively RWD for decades, and people all over Northern Europe drove those in winter conditions just fine. Driver training and proper tires are really all that’s needed. People are so poorly trained nowadays and very few pursue additional training beyond the pathetically minimal state licensing requirements. Hence people now seem to think they need AWD and an automatic to get through winter. BS. I drove a stick-shift, 2WD Golf GTI VR6 on all-season tires through Iowa winters. Never had a problem. Saw more people in 4x4 SUVs sideways in the ditch or median than any other kind of car. The SS gets driven in winter just fine by many owners on the forum... proper rubber and sensible driving tactics are all it takes. RWD is not some dealbreaker in winter, despite what many seem to think. If you really don’t have the skill, go find a local performance driving school and/or seek out a car control and inclement weather driving course. Best $200 you will ever spend. Before balking at the price, realize that’s less than the cost of TWO winter tires, not even a full set. And the driving course will help you in EVERY car you climb into. But yeah, great practical approach to DDing a sports car. It IS doable! Glad to see you out enjoying a fun car. Sounds like budget was a consideration here, so this is even more applicable to the guys thinking they can’t afford multiple cars. Keep up the good work.
@Viper30485 жыл бұрын
I've daily driven 2 C5 Corvettes and loved every minute of it. Never had any problems whatsoever. Regularly got over 22 mpg on average and the cars were very strong when it came to power delivery. The people who downvoted this video obviously know nothing about Corvettes or had a rare freak experience where something went catastrophically wrong. Every car, I don't care what kind, is going to have a few that experience more problems than the rest. But overall Corvettes are extremely reliable cars, easy to work on, comfortable, and practical. I love Corvettes, there's nothing else I'd rather have. I've owned foreign sports cars, they just don't have the same appeal to me, they aren't quite as fun to drive, and the maintenance and reliability is poor compared to a Corvette. Great video.

We have a 2001 Z06, since new, has 150+k on the clock, and had been driven in all conditions. Remember the body is plastic (dose not rust), if driven regularly the the under side stays cleaner then you would think, even after three season at Bonneville on the salt there is no ill effect (yes driving 500 miles home through Thunder storms will clean out most of the salt) About the only thing that showsdamage is trailing inside of the fender openings (we have an unusually large amount of road sand/gravel), still after 17 years and 150k its expected.

Holycow do it, you will not regret it one bit. Only thing i am worried about is low water areas. Getting home from work is quite a few spots for me. But i imagine it would be ok in less then a few inches. I might get a truck sooner or later.

If you are worried about salt just put some corrosion protection on your car especially on such an expensive one as the Corvette. I live in Germany where in the area i live in we can have snow that lasts a few days or just slush where they use a lot of salt and i had my Mustang treated with Mike Sanders because i daily drive it.
@RustyZipper6 жыл бұрын
Enforcer1975 - I had my GMC truck fully under coated in 2012, the frame and box is showing heavy rust as of last year. That salt gets everywhere and starts rotting GM metal immediately.
@Enforcer_WJDE6 жыл бұрын
Wow then the metal must be really bad. My car has a fingernail size spot of corrosion on the edge of the hood but that's it. The importer where i had my car maintained just last month said it was in very good condition despite being 8yo now and me getting the protection done when i got it when it was 3yo. Was lucky the previous owners used it in summer only. I was also lucky the last winters, i can count on one hand how often salt was used in those 5 years and i gave the car a full wash and wax after that every time.

Enforcer1975 - well my mom says if you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say nothing. GM’s metal quality is ...... I also have a 2009 Toyota Rav 4, it never gets washed, no undercoating, same conditions, Zero, and I mean ZERO rust. Hmmmm

@@RustyZipper did you use regular undercoating or something like Liquid Film? If the coating trapped moisture underneath it, the treatment may have been worse than leaving it alone.

I daily drove a 1985 Corvette in high school, it was my first car and probably my favorite part of high school. It was a hell of a lot of fun and I got in a bunch of trouble but it was well worth it. Don’t get your panties in a twist, I paid $3500 for it back in 2011. It currently sits gutted in my garage as I spun a main bearing. I truly loved and do miss the Corvette experience, I’m looking to get another in a couple years. It runs in the family too; I have a Corvette, my dad has one, and his dad had one. Daily drove it too

I daily drove a C6 with over 100k miles on it for a few years. It was truly a daily driver, as it was the one and only vehicle I had. It ran like new with zero issues. Only thing it needed was regular maintenance like any other car that you want to take care of. And yes, I drove it like a Corvette too. High revs and lots of hard launches for fun. Edit: So much fun that I got a C7 to replace it.
@MrNexus2000 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I just read your comment here and I’m on the fence about getting into a 2005 Corvette that I found that I would really like to get but my research online leads to a lot of negativity and bad reputation on this year vehicle. I would really like to get invested in this car, but would love to speak to somebody with direct experience on the C6, especially with that mileage and experience that you have hope to hear back from you. Thank you.
@twiceonsundays Жыл бұрын
@@MrNexus2000 The only reason the 2005 is the year to avoid the C6 is because that's the first year the C6 was made. Sports cars have a history of "first year kinks" when a new model comes out. The following year models often fix those issues, add features based on feedback, and offer a few more options. My C6 was a 2009, and that thing seemed pretty much bullet proof. I ended up getting a 2014 C7, which was the first year run of that vehicle. Like any other vehicle run, it does indeed have it's first year kinks. I had to replace the radiator fan which had a glitch only found in that year model. It was corrected in the following years. lol I have zero regrets though. I love the Vette. I suggest doing research on common issues and being prepared to deal with them ahead of time. Don't let that stop you from getting a Vette though. You'll love it, trust me!
@MrNexus2000 Жыл бұрын
@@twiceonsundays thank you so much for the feedback and yes I’m well aware of all the bad first year kinks that the 05 C6 is known to come with and that’s what’s preventing me from pulling the trigger on getting into this car with that said the car has been well taken care of and it’s got 90,000 miles on it of course the owner says he’s never had any issues with it and he just gets in it and drives it and that’s it but maybe it wasn’t the best idea for me to do the research on that your vehicle because all the research just filled me with so much doubt. Especially the detail about how bad those cars eat their batteries, it seems to be a common situation where Corvettes kill batteries and you have to take some precautions on preserving the battery life. Any thoughts on that point?
@conanlive3784 Жыл бұрын
@@MrNexus2000Are you looking at an automatic or a manual? I would not get a 2005 auto, that's the only year the C6 had just a 4-speed. I have a 2008 auto, and it does go through batteries......I change mine every 2-3 years to make sure I never get stranded. But it's a lot of fun to drive, especially turning off the nannies and driving in "competitive mode".
@MrNexus2000 Жыл бұрын
@@conanlive3784 I have since moved on from that car but I found a 2006 manual with 111,000 miles on it that is super charged and in great shape inside and out. The car looks and sounds very good and healthy and he’s asking 28 but with that much mileage I’m planning on offering 23 at the most because once I start putting mileage on that car, the resale values gonna drop dramatically . my main concern is about how will it be for a daily driver ? And I hope I don’t have all those issues that everyone keeps talking about how the C6 Corvettes drains batteries

With 4400 miles on my 6 month old '18 Stingray 7 spd. stick I drove a roundtrip 1400 miles. The overall trip showed about 31mpg...with one recorded segment...some downhill in 7th...over 40 mpg! That is still on the display...and if I did not have the ability to access that feature, even I would not believe it! I was driving I-5 out of N. CA to Oregon, and then Hwy 97 in OR. Hit 90mph a little, but mostly cruising at 65 to 75...amazing! I have owned Porsche 911's, and a couple of other sports cars...the Corvette works for me...better than all the rest.

Drove my 2018 all winter. In Canada. There was about 5 days where I couldn't drive it because I couldn't get traction. But then, I don't have winter tires. The snow doesn't get too deep where I live, but it's wet snow, and real slippery. As for ride, mine's also a 1LT, and was pleasantly surprised at comfort and ride on my first highway trip. Eight hour drive, stopped halfway through to let my dog relieve himself and top up the tank, and was quite comfortable. I never got the numb ass I got in other vehicles on the same trip.
