The current Land Cruiser is officially the oldest 'new' vehicle currently on sale in SA. This generation went on sale locally more than 20 years ago but continues to be one of the best sellers in the market.
What makes the Land Cruiser so special? And, most importantly, what is the new powertrain like now that the 2.8-litre turbodiesel has been lifted from the Hilux into the new Land Cruiser? This inclusion also marks the first time an automatic gearbox has been used in the Land Cruiser 76!

What do you think makes the Land Cruiser so popular in SA and would you pay R1 million for the new auto version?
@thabisondebele4308

For R1 million... No. In fact, I was questioning Honda SA for pricing the CR-V at R1 million vs Mazda who have brought a 3.3 turbo MHEV for ... Yep, +R1 million. The new 520d is R1.2M. New car prices in 2024 are just something else...😅

What makes it popular is that the people buying it don’t care about the comforts you say it lacks. Neither do they care about fuel consumption. Majority are modified and tailored to the liking of the owner and therefore this basic platform is enough. I completely agree the price is excessive but that what you pay for reliability and off road capability. Majority of people have never been on a dirt road and can’t appreciate this car which is sad. It’s a cult following! If it was my opinion I’d still chose the v8 manual on a new one anyday.

Agree, but its not worth it, but the market talks. The problem however for the user is that the used car dealers take very high profits, so you dont get that much and I have felt that I was short changed when selling my one. In SA to sell privately is very rare as dealers offer finance, warrantees etc. And I am not against Dealers but it reduces the bragging rights condiderably for the private owner. So only the guys buying cash can really make it a win win for both seller and buyer. So I eprsonally think its a bit of a myth that Toyota trade in is so good, its also a perception.

This vehicle will still run fairly smoothly for the next 20 to 30 years. It’s for people who want something that doesn’t go wrong at all. Even if something goes wrong, one could easily find parts to fix the issue. I know the Chinese cars come with a lot of spec but I don’t even want to know the cost of replacing your big dual screens if something were to go wrong or if the aircon is not working because of the screens. Toyota basically installs all the tried and tested parts on this vehicle so that very little stuff goes wrong. And 95% of South Africans aren’t it’s target market and Toyota is fine with that.

On luxury: If you want the comforts you can get it in a bakkie/SUV for the same price. It's specifically left out because it's adding complicated electronics to the vehicle creates failure points that you really don't want in critical situations. On price: Considering the current market where a little shitty EcoSport replacement costs R600k and a new 1,5L Honda CR-V also costs you over R1mil, Toyota has only marginally increased the price of the new model while other car makers double it making it prices very well comparatively. And like art, a car's price is subjective. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it... and nothing holds its value like a Land Cruiser... and that inherently adds to the value of the car. Now on price + level of luxury: I agree, they could at least offer some creature comforts for the people that want them. Because like the Jimny, people don't use them for what they are intended and I believe it's an oversight from Toyota to not at least offer luxuries for the slice of the market that just buys it for the status. In conclusion, the majority of these cars rightfully gets used in very rough/dangerous conditions(like farming in SA which is extremely dangerous, where even if you evade all the people trying to murder you... you still don't want to get caught next to the side of the road in the middle of the night with no reception because your car went into limp mode due the the passenger's massaging seats malfunctioning). And the Land Cruiser is not known for luxury, unlike the German brands who will give you an extremely basic "luxury" car also for R1mil if you don't specify any options... which is ultimately a more heinous crime.

I think the climate controls done like that are great. There was nothing wrong with controlling them like that for decades! When there is no electric motors in useless places, it's much less to go wrong. And I say this as an electrical / electronics engineer myself. Electronics are really nice and electricity is a great invention, but nowadays they are used a lot in places where you don't really need them. The explosion of complexity is making cars less and less maintainable all the time. A fancy LED / LASER / projector etc. light in a car costs thousands to replace once it doesn't work. Compare that to the old price of a bulb, or even a xenon light is still an order of magnitude cheaper to fix. None of the now new fancy cars will be on the road after 15 years.

G wagon has maintained the boxy shape on the outside but when you get on the inside you are welcomed by all the future tech and comfort

Even though this car is cheaper, the G-Wagon is meant to be a luxury. It's a part of the Mercedes brand. The LC250 is supposed to be more affordable but the lack of features makes it feel like a rip off.

While I totally agree that the price is extremely difficult to justify, I believe the reason for the massive lack of features is on purpose because of the conditions that these cars drive. If someone drives deep into the bush, the car is intended to not rely on electric components as much as possible which makes the car very reliable and easier to fix with little access to technical support, which I agree with. I don't mind the lack of features but the price is insane

In the UAE, Japan, Down-Under and a few other countries Toyota specs the 70-series with a much better infotainment system, steering controls, new cluster with more detailed trip computer, new head lights with daytime lights, adaptive cruise control, emergency brake assist and lane departure warning (or lane keep assist, not sure which one). It’s funny how Toyota SA thinks that the SA consumer is not worthy of these long overdue upgrades on a R1m vehicle…

On top of that heavy price tag, the whole rear axle needs to be replaced because they say that its about 50mm narrower than the front because of that big V8 that they had to make room for which makes it fishtail when driving on sand

To put it in a nutshell (about V8 version): 1. This car is made of solid steel with a beast under the bonnet, not from puffy plastic with an overturned mosquito instead of an engine. 2. This car is designed for true men and real women who are strong and classy, not for anyone in between painted in rainbow colours. 3. This car is not for those who call a trip from home to the shopping mall an “adventure tour.” 4. This car is not for those who are guided by temporary trends and fashion, but rather for those who guide others or have an independent mindset. 5. This car is designed and built for harsh and tough conditions, with an extremely huge reserve of durability and capability to do things that other cars can demonstrate only once in their lifetime under studio conditions. P.S. I’ve noticed one thing in my life-people criticize things that they cannot really afford or even know nothing about.

Have a look at what older generation LC's go for on the second-hand market and the R1million price tag doesn't seem so bad anymore. There's a reason for the demand and there's a reason they hold their value. This LC will still be going strong (and be in style) 20 years from now.

That "reason" is unconditional brand loyalty and nothing more. A Mahindra Pik-up is just as reliable, more modern and a 3rd the price.

It's already not in style today, even 20 years ago it was not in style. People should stop deceiving themselves because they were bamboozled 1million by a dealership that their car is automatically stylish.

I find it interesting that the price for the new 76 is almost 2.8 times more expensive than the 76 we bought in 2012. Poor exchange rate and dealership prices not being regulated is probably big contributers. But you can watch how toyota prices increase each quarter.

Dude, I've been driving cruisers for 20 years. I get it that u don't like it, but I love my new 2.8 auto 76. If u want luxury, go buy a vx fortuner. This car is for cruiser afficionado s, it's to cater for a specific kind of buyer, for a niche market so to speak. The less electronic stuff there is, the less there is to break! I don't agree with ur opinion, I bought mine as an everyday driver, fuel consumption is 8km/l, performance adequate, suspension is great after fitting DCS. So u do u, us cruiser owners will do us. Cheers!

Good review as always, what makes this vehicle expensive especially 4.5 was that it doesn't share components with other Toyota vehicles, and the plant maintenance where they make it is expensive to repair those old equipments. Other things that makes them expensive is that they are being used by most mining industry, even underground mining they are there. Sometimes we even shortage of spares availability in the mining industry

I understand what they trying to do by keeping ALL of the bits and pieces that made a Land Cruiser, but I feel a few features for comfort and appeal would still be appreciated by its target market. They could have used the UK’s Land Cruiser Ultimate or the Hilux as a base on for what small comfort features could they incorporate

For those who want to travel from Cape Town to Cairo, then yes this vehicle is great. This is a great example of how OEM’s are ripping off their customers offering a vehicle from the 70’s for the same amount of money that would actually buy me a vehicle which has benefited from years of R&D. I’m with you, this vehicle should cost the same as a Picanto…

I honestly think that ... somehow we are not the targeted market for this one. I think for the first time, Toyota is targeting someone who could be living in Yemen or Sudan or somewhere in the Middle East and happens to own an Anti Aircraft Machine gun and need to mount it onto something "modern". We just happen to be middle man ... I don't know🤔🤷🏾‍♂️

I think some of the Toyota Fans may miss the point here. This is a good vehicle, and it does what it says on the box. Nobody is arguing that. But R1 million.... That's the argument. You are paying about $450k just for your brand loyalty.

I saw a review of this new one with electrical mirrors, steering controls, lane keeping assistance and day time running lights. So, i bet those extras will come in SA but that will just take a year or so for us to get it.. It’s painful to buy an expensive car with everything but reliability. Rather buy this tank knowing I’m good Beautiful car!!!

Its a slap in the face how basic these cars are. The 1 Mil is not the problem. What you get for the money is the problem. The age old argument about reliability also isnt valid anymore. Lets be honest. If you can afford a 1M+ car, you really dont need to drive it until the wheels comes off! Most buyers will sell it after a couple of years. What they do great in is resale valvue. No other car holds value like a cruiser.

This review really just missed the mark. It’s as if you’ve completely forgotten what this car is for. If you look at all the Australian reviews this cruiser is a hit for certain tasks. Also people really miss this point, this car is a tool same way a truck is. This isn’t a luxury car or an expensive car it’s a high quality tool that will make you money. And yes some people use these as overlanders for fun and recreation but they use them because they are a tool built to last that they can adapt.

The land cruisers in first world countries come greater features than this. They have the updated dashboard, updates steering wheel and electric mirrors. The headlight even have the LED daytime running lights. They just gave us the crumbs of what they actually produced That man is right about the mirrors. My left mirror always comes in every time I drive more than 120km/h. I don’t adjust it until someone from outside can do it for me😂😂
