@@19hundoc47 Because it beat a similarly priced vehicle with a larger engine (2.0L vs. 2.4L) marketed towards the same customer base that came out 24 years later, and you can't even blame emissions regs. How does your 24 year old computer compare to today? How about a 24 year old f-150 compared to today? Because the ap1 s2000 went on sale in 1999; that's why it's impressive.

Well, the s2000 was in the Boxter, BMW Z3 category of sports cars when released in 2000, not entry level like a Miata for example. The GR86 is the entry level sports car of today that finally caught up to the mid segment sports cars from 20 years ago.

My dad has a red S2000 exactly like that one. He bought it new in 2009, one of the last to be imported before production ended. I have driven it lots over the years and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. You don’t get cars like the S2000 anymore which is sad because it is such a simple machine - great chassis and handling, NA engine, short shift gearbox, relatively low weight. What a Great Race! I enjoyed this thoroughly! If only Toyota continued developing it's iconic engines like the 4A-GE which used to rev to 8000rpm back in the day, they would have produced something truly special by now...

Toyota's iconic 4AGE engine is a copy of the British Cosworth BDA engine that had been around for quite some time back then and there's all kinds of modifications possible made to them by now.

I used to work for an insurance company many years ago and a guy called one Saturday morning, i could tell something was wrong. Naturally, because of my position, i knew it was bad news. Nothing prepared me for what he was calling for. Long story short: A "newly licensed" young female driver in her brand new X3 lost control on the N1 into this guy and he bounced off the central barriers multiple times. The car? Black S2000 with a black hardtop, stock, very well taken care of and 30k on the dash, virtually brand new! he only had it for a month (if i remember correctly) after searching for about a year for one. It was his dream car. The car was written-off with no way to rebuild it. And i had to call him to deliver the news, at that moment it felt like i was delivering news to an army spouse about the sad demise of a close friend killed on the battlefield. That was the most saddest day of my career, i tell the story all the time to my mates. 1 less S2k in South Africa 😟 They walked away from the accident unscathed and yes...he was on a coffee run with some buddies.

By the numbers, the S2K is up 12 horsepower (5%) but down on torque about 20% (31 ft ibs) so being faster is impressive especially on an old engine, and the GR86 often reported close to 250 hp not 228. S2K still impressive to say the least and also Toyota for not giving us another slow car. Both tons of fun I’m sure.

Surprised both cars are equal weight, would have thought the S2K would be a fair bit lighter given lack of amenities. Would be interesting to see what the results would be with a base GR86 as the 18 inch option wheels effectively give the car taller gearing. Well done gents!

No short cuts with respect to body stiffness so weight do to something worth having . Also in a accident , you have two rail road tracks sticking out the front not unibody so much better protection .

The GR86 is quite a good 2-seater Japanese sports car. However, I am quite sad this will not come to Romania. Consumers in Romania would be able to afford it if it were to be sold there; it’s just that Toyota doesn’t wanna sell it in that particular market.

86 is designed for taking corners and drifting. They should have had 6 races, with the drivers switching cars for 3 of the races. These races are highly dependent on the driver's ability to launch and shift gears.

Don’t forget , double wishbones on all 4 conners , 245 tires in the back that when upgraded came with even more body reinforcement , entire engine set behind the front wheels , proper race type oil pan baffle, cooling fins on the bottom of engine and transmission and transmission oil is being pumped all on the S2000. This is a track car for the street !A lot of money not spent on bells and whistles not even a glove box or adjustable steering column . The car does not have two pipes coming out of one muffler to give the appearance of a of a fast car , but two actual , complete mufflers for power not a poser like the gr-86 .Lastly adjusted for inflation , the S2000 was a $55,000 car so unlike the 86/ BRZ , the builders were not effected by bean counters and it was built in a special plant until 2005 much by hand by Hondas best techs right next to the NSX . The car could have done better in a drag race . Because of its lower torque peak , it all depends on how much your willing to burn your clutch to get a good lift off . It was not made to be a drag car so lift off not a issue . Excluding more power thru the application of direct injection , what is something modern does it need to do better ? Nothing but the most up to date tires so age is not a factor . The GR -86 is a GT car and the S2000 is a track car two different animals so when you say the S2000 does not have a back seat , I say so what !!!!

I've seen one video where the GR beat it, I think it's because of the aero and stiffer chasis. The S2000 also needs to stay revved up and has poor aero which makes it more technical on track while the GR has torque around 3500rpm, but it's close enough to call it a tie.
@binskee677
@binskee677 Жыл бұрын
The engine from the S2000 has more potential but stock the 86 would beat it as it's much newer and the above mentioned reasons. Although the S2000 might be faster in the cornern due to the double wishbone suspension construction and it's one of the best OEM sportscar suspension i have driven, even compared to newer cars.
