New BMW X5 M50d Review - Quad-turbo Monster?

BMW recently launched their 4th generation X5, the car that originally created a whole new segment and which has sold in vast numbers ever since. The third generation saw the introduction of a special, high performance diesel model known as the M50d.
Back in 2014 we actually drag raced it over a quarter mile against the supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport and the result was...surprising. You can watch that video here:

And now there's a brand new M50d, and for some reason BMW saw fit to add another turbo charger, making this a rare quad-turbo beast.
In this video we get stuck in and take a detailed look at the new X5. Our video guy Ciro De Siena will take you through all the tech and specs you might care for and he even offers an opinion or two about its performance, acceleration and handling.
And lastly we try and answer the question, is the X5 M50d enough of a performance SUV for your money, or should you wait for the upcoming X5 M?

This M50d is really an amazing car,I drove this for a good 6 months..the torque is simply perfect for it and it’s not underpowered at all..I live in Botswana and our roads aren’t exactly spacious or suitable for very high speeds but this serves its purpose very well...I hauled my family in it and it was amazing that I could smoke any versions of the C63 from stand still and rolling,it’s a wonderful car..simply amazing in every aspect. Fun car!

I drove the new M50d and my own 2015 M50d with air suspension back to back and was absolutely not thrilled by the new car's ride and handling. The new M50d certainly has better synthetic exhaust sound going on but mechanically, it doesn't feel like a major improvement over the old one. Will try it again when I can get a 7 seat version with air suspension.

F15 x5 on rear air uses adaptive dampers to stiffen it up. It's far better and more precise and stable than the dual air on the new car

ShmeeSHemmmShublyou didn't develop the quad turbo engine specifically for the new X5. They developed it a couple of years ago and put it in the 750D and in some markets, the M550D (G30). They're not going to develop multiple engines in multiple configurations. Anyway great video.

PS: I found it amusing that this car has the same 0-60 and the same power (approx) as a 2009 ML550 with 285kw, 0-60 in 5.3 and it too is a torque monster that you barely touch the pedal to woosh past people and all they hear is a woosh of air. Congratulations BMW. You've made a megacruiser to go toe-to-toe with the 10-year old ML550.

4 Turbo chargers is not implemented to get more power or more speed. It is neccesarry to comply to the strict emission laws in Europe.

The 3 years old SQ7 is way more impressive. Also a 12 years old audi Q7 V12 TDI Anyway, close to an audi Q8, that offers the same trunk and more space on the rear seats, the X5 looks 5-7 years older to the audi. Also, the bmw is likely more expensive to run because the mild hybrid Q8 offers a great MPG on this category (also offers, dual pane glasses, B&0 3d hi-fi and a lot more features than this X5).
