Good advice, can I add that it's wise to watch numerous auctions to see how the bidding process progresses. Very wise info about sticking to the car type you know. If you use the app on an iPad you get the full vehicle reg number so you can look up mot history (very usefu). You will notice that some vehicles are category S when there appears to be only panel damage and no structural damage, do not assume this has been an error by Copart! I would not buy a vehicle without viewing in person. Items to look for, if you are amateur then stay away from damage to steering or suspension only buy panel damage. Look to see if the car has had previous damage (paint doesn't quite match). Often they will photo each wheel, this is important as you need to see each wheel sits accurately within the wheel arch space. The quality of the tyres ie are they premium tyres or budget shows how well the car has been cared for. The edge of the wheels will also show how well the car has been driven, well at least how well how well it has avoided being kerbed. Last advice is to look at the parts you will need to buy in advance and how much they are going to cost. Body panels in ORIGINAL matching colour are worth travelling a distance for as this can make your repair undetectable and save time etc in painting costs. Buying from Copart is a risk and sometimes it's cheaper to buy on eBay or similar where you can always walk away if the advert doesn't accurately reflect the advertised car.

I think I resolved a mistery of cat S with minimal damage... Have a look at Chrome Toolbar: www.auctionhunter.io and browse this lot for example which is for sale right now: www.copart.co.uk/lot/29896450. It looks like this car is the second time on Copart and this time it has only minimal damage but previous entry was not so good...

Fully repaired you need to be in it for no more than 2/3rd's of the 'STRAIGHT' price, a 6k car is worth no more than 4k. So a car needing £1500 worth of work, don't go bidding 3k, you'll be upset.

I've a friend in the trade who owes me one so as long as not mangled I'll be over the moon. You made a scary opening statement about scams but I realised you meant these folk didn't read the small print. How difficult is it from never bidding on a car to owning the right one. Copart won't tell you when the car will be delivered unless you call them. I suggest you give the yard a call and they will tell you when the car is scheduled to be picked up. depending on how far away the yard is from your home, it may take an additional day.
