I stopped to pick up an 80 year hitchhiking old grandmother for free, who was with 2 very young grandchildren in one freezing cold winter morning when I was stopped by 3 taxi rank cars. They took my wallet that had about R720.00 in it and demanded more. Even if I paid them, they refused the old lady and her grandchildren to go with me. I went to a police station to open a case and the officers told me I was wrong to pick up people in a taxi route and refused to open a case. I called the Santago office and I was told the same thing and even warned to never pick up anyone in the future no matter how desperate they looked. Taxi owners do not consider themselves business men or women. If they did that would entail formalizing and legitimizing their business (Admin, tax, standards, reporting bad driving, fines for non compliance) and actually competing and offering their customers a great service like any other business. Instead what you have are mobs masquerading as entrepreneurs. These are the kinds of people who hold back the countries development. "A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation." - Gustavo Petro

Imagine I have a car but can't transport my grandma who lives in another suburb with a hospital appointment. We have freedom of choice in this country. This lawless behavior in the taxi industry needs to be rooted out. It has just become bigger problem

I feel like this guy isn't even safe for reporting on this case😢

This also happens in Govan Mbeki Municipality, we are told to have two passengers in a car that carries 5 people. These guys stand at the 4 way stop with Knopkirries and rocks. I wish the minister of transport could intervene, or open a platform where these crimes could be reported.

In 2017,on my way from work. Our taxi was shot at. They had their own fight in Vaal and a low life chose to come out of the veld in Walker ville to shoot at us. The car was at a high speed and that scumbag cared less.

Guys this behaviour is also rife in the Eastern Cape. We were once chased down from Mthatha to East London by taxi drivers who were driving in a Quantum. They drove us off the road and into a ditch and started shooting at us. The car caught fire but luckily no one got injured. Sadly the traffic officials this side are very complicite because they themselves are taxi owners and at times will watch whilst taxis bully people on the roads.
