If I could start over as a drummer knowing what I know now, I would learn to play open handed like this. You can replicate a lot of what Carter can play (in theory) on a regular kit and playing style, but some of the work he does switching between both hands on the hi hat and the ride you could never pull off without his set up. The man is a genius and idk why more people haven't adopted his playing style. He can do it all.

hey man its never too late to learn a new style. there are ways to compensate as well. obviously its really hard when youve been leading with ur right hand the whole time playing crossed but try to turn ur kit into a lefty kit and it will only switch your feet. also you can get a remote hi hat. make ur double kick pedal a lefty. and use the extended pedal as ur main pedal on ur right side. ur remote hi hate pedal will be right in front of the bass drum. kinda wierd but u can get used to it!

If you play cross handed, one thing you can try to do is move your hi-hat to the right side, since muscle memory is already with your right hand to play the rhythms of hi hats. The only potential problem could be pedals…

I got this VHS tape when I was in the 5th grade from my dad as well as a drum kit. I would watch this every day after school and would try my hardest to sound like this, but of course it wasn’t perfect. Long story short Carter Beauford was probably the biggest inspiration on me as a kid on my journey to becoming a drummer. If it wasn’t for that VHS tape I wouldn’t be drumming today. I've listened to Dave Matthews Band for as long as I can remember and Carter's playing has stood out to me like no other drummer I've ever heard. He expresses every piece of the music with such detail that it almost makes you think he is the lead for every part. Not only is the band not like any other band, but so is his style, and that really makes them a true diamond in the rough. I don't know of any other band that has such taste and class. Nothing hes doing is too difficult, all his hi-hat work consists of is double stroke rolls. If you can hang with double stroke rolls then you just have to study his tendencies and improvising patterns. If you can't do that after 20 years then you are practicing the wrong things! Yes there are some double strokes in his "go to" bag of tricks that he mixes in with 16th note syncopation but the idea you can learn double strokes on the hats, his tendencies and play like Carter is one of the greatest stretches I've heard someone state when discussing drumming.

Watching a guy find what he was born to do is always fantastic. Most people can learn to do things to a certain point, and then there are those that become Carter Beauford. You know, that just take playing to the upper echelon. I've been playing drums for years and there just really is no way for me to ever to be able to get to that level. I just don't have the time and devotion to get there. I'd literally have to quit work, and just focus on drums 24/7. I feel like that is how most these guys got there in the first place, by playing no stop for years on end. Most of us are just not going to put that level of effort in to get to that point, which is why there aren't a bunch of Carters walking around. It is a pleasure and a joy to watch videos like these to watch the masters at work because you never get to see that a whole lot.

DukeOfDeath27 except it's not a "roll". It's simply a triplet(for this LRR,LRR.....) Left on the flat ride and right going down the toms. I said "simply" but to get it that smooth and even just to think to use it isnt "simple". It really isnt hard to play though of you can play simple triplets leading with the left hand.

Man, this guy's open handed drumming technique has no equal, definitely a wonder to behold. Since I'm not a drummer and this is just me taking a stand, everyone should take everything I say with a grain of salt. I watch damn near every drum video from every drummer out there. And every once in a long while I come back to this guy and drums are refreshing and new again. The music itself is not sick but the drums are. And he manages to do it without ever sounding over the top or too progressive for the music. All the stick flips and crossover work. The right hand drum roll across the toms while playing the high-hat and snare with the left....nuts. And so easily. So damn easy. Lots of good guys out there but if i'm putting a dream team together, this guy is definitely a starter. It just doesn't seem like he will ever let the band or the music down. Not only is his ability ridiculous but he's an innovator.

Very well said.. Every fill is nothing short of incredible, yet it is never over the top or as if he's trying to take over the show.. True drummers can see the magic in what he does. I've played and studed drums since i was 6, was 1st drummer in PA Jazz and played in a band that coverd Dave songs in highschool.. I used to think his albums were edited when I would hear him playing hi hat and cymbal all while doing a run across the toms, until I saw him live.. Dave Matthews is a talented song writer with crazy ideas and time signatures, and thankfully, they have a drummer like Carter who can take those ideas to a whole new level.

Yeah i mean i wanna see this guy attempt to do something that is legit challenging for him. I always thought he was just way too good for dave matthews band. And i love dmb and he did just fine with them, but he really is so far beyond everyone else as far as just musical chops goes. He really could hold his own in bands that are far more technically challenging than dmb like idk something like rush or dream theater, maybe tool. Bands like that. Hes doing all this really complex stuff in a band that is absolutely not complex at all. It was always a bit of a weird mix to me.

I mean obviously he sounds fine in dmb, but hes often times soooo busy while the music is not busy at all. It just makes me wonder if he ever wished dmb would get more ambitious or adventurous musically to get closer to what he’s doing. Dave is a great guitar player but his writing style is definitely much more traditional as compared to say a band like rush. I just always thought carter might enjoy being in a band like that to really push his skills, like it did for neil peart. Time signature changes and all that fun stuff dmb doesnt do very much. Dudes probably real tired of playing 4/4 beats in dmb lol

@@trenken haha I Agree with you he should be doing other projects so people can understand how insane this guy is. He’s probably the best drummer in the world if not definitely top 5 right now because he changes lead hand in the middle of songs, leads with the left and then leads with the right 😂. He’s a straight monster and he plays so relaxed, like Dennis chambers, Marco Minnemann and other elite drummers. He’s way too good for DM band haha. Although DM as a unit play clean why they perform live, it’s still far from complex and Carter doesn’t get to show off more chops and styles

@@trenken Carter can do that in his sleep and Do it while changing lead hands. He can play in any band and be the best one in the band accept for a few bands like The Aristocrats who have one of the best guitarist in the world if not the best one haha. Carter unfortunately stayed loyal to his band but he’s definitely developed enough as a drummer to play any style he wanted to. He truly doesn’t have a weakness as a drummer, power, dynamics, speed, technical and has great dynamics. Give him 3 months and he would play Any Rush, Dream theatre or Aristocrats song in his sleep while playing open handed

His groove and pocket is clean. And he is a lefty. He is my favorite drummer! I am a lefty open handed. I just started playing with the ride cymbal on the right side. However I use my left hand primary on the Hi-Hats and my right hand on cymbal ride. It's a great feeling to be both handed.

He's right handed and plays open handed because he would practice drums in front of a mirror and try to copy drummers he liked. That ended up with him making his left hand more dextrous.

Bruno de Souza Lino He plays open handed because he set his drums up like Buddy Rich when he was a kid, got confused, then started playing open handed. He explains it in his dvd.

From the first time I saw him with DMB back in 1993 this man blew my mind and has continued to blow my mind almost 30 years later. There’s been a lot of accomplished drummers over the years but few can do what this man can do. I’d like to see Larnell Lewis do a one-listen cover of Carter playing ANYTHING. Not likely. 😆
