What If GOKU fought GOHAN at the Cell Games? | Dragon Ball Z

What if the Cell Games were a normal tournament?

By the end of the Cell Saga in Dragon Ball Z the two strongest characters are clearly Super Saiyan 2 Gohan and Super Perfect Cell. However, if we roll the clock back a bit to the time where Gohan didn’t have Super Saiyan 2 yet. The time when Goku and Gohan first exit the Time Chamber or when they first arrive at the Cell Games - we find a weird contention when it comes to who’s the stronger of the father-son duo. To be honest though, I’m not sure why.
So let’s make a change to the Cell Games. Instead of everyone versus Cell, the Tournament is instead a bracket system. The bracket is set up in a way that would allow Goku and Gohan to meet in the finals. The winner of the Tournament has the “honor” of fighting Cell for the fate of the Earth and its people. Now I don’t think there’s any contention that Gohan and Goku would be the strongest two in the bracket. Just in case there is, even as just a Super Saiyan, Gohan at full power shocked everyone present at the Cell Games and even had Vegeta basically questioning his entire existence. I don’t want to dive too deep into the power scaling there because I’ll be talking about Super Saiyan Gohan more in a little bit.
Back to the main topic, as I said before, there is contention on who would win if Super Saiyan Gohan and Super Saiyan Goku fought. No Super Saiyan 2 - just their mastery over the original Super Saiyan form and their own raw power. So let's look at the feats, the statements, and most importantly the narrative to find out who would win.

I'm surprised people think Goku was just lying about not being able to beat Cell. Even in the anime, he has that moment where after he tells everyone he doesn't think he can beat him and they tell him maybe he should go back on the chamber, he instead spends the days leading up to the Cell Games just spending time with his family. Goku of all people. To me it made it pretty clear that Goku was making the most of what time they had left in the event that Gohan wasn't able to pull through on his plan because he knew he couldn't win.

I think they goes by the scene of Goku's Warp Kamehameha where it destroys a good chunk of Cell's body (before you know, the unnecessary Nucleus thing)

Yeah he def was not lying. Cell detected towards the end of their fight that Goku wasn’t holding back anymore. The instant kamehameha was full power too. However, we know Cell was holding back Vs Goku still, he doesn’t power up fully till Gohan goes SSJ 2 Also rest and recovery is a major part of Goku’s training philosophy. He mentions that spending more time in the HTC won’t make him stronger anymore for now. It’s just unnecessary stress on the body after a certain point, teasing Vegeta when Vegeta says Goku is pussying out of more training 1-2 days before the cell games.

I always thought it was obvious with how blatant the story was that Gohan in the Cell Saga was stronger than Goku even without SSJ2. He literally saw his dad fight at full power and Gohan was genuinely unimpressed by it because he was using himself as a reference

This goes against all training logic in the DBZ universe. In order to get stronger, you have to struggle and push yourself. How can Gohan just naturally surpass Goku while only pushing himself at Goku's level in the time chamber? Some amount of natural potential sure, could explain Gohan being slightly stronger. But to be overwhelmingly stronger, nah it doesn't make sense unless Gohan did extra training without Goku which Gohan has really never ever done in his life.

@@michaelq4965 It’s not just “some amount of natural potential” that Gohan possesses, it’s _a lot._ He’s a fighting prodigy that has been consistently stated to have far greater potential than other fighters with prodigal talent like Goku or Vegeta. Literally after being amped by God Ki, an energy source that drastically increases a users strength compared to ordinary ki, both of them and Piccolo acknowledge Gohan’s potential _still_ surpasses theirs. Like, I can not put into words how utterly broken it is especially now with what we’ve seen in Dragon Ball Super. And who’s to say he only pushed himself at Goku’s level? We know in the anime they sparred against each other, but at the same time we can see Gohan training all on his lonesome just so he could push himself harder. Then there’s the fact that the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is an extremely hostile place to point where it can be physically and mentally taxing just being there. All of this plus his natural talent makes it completely possible for him to be that far ahead.

@@123GOHANZ Like Piccolo's comments in Super are almost purely fan service. It is a What If that will never happen just to make fans happy. I am not sure if you mean Goku and Vegeta said it. How do I know Gohan only pushed himself at Goku's level? Because even after the entire Cell arc Gohan still thinks Goku is stronger than he is. If Gohan was fighting at his best like you guys say, then he'd be pushing Goku and winning but for some reason he still thinks Goku is much stronger than he is. I'm not saying Gohan can't be stronger than Goku and win in the time chamber, but if the gap was that massive, Gohan would have had to pick up on it.

@@michaelq4965 Piccolo’s statement would be fanservice if it wasn’t for the fact that Goku and Vegeta acknowledged it as well. Prior to the Tournament of Destroyers Vegeta suggested Gohan come along and outright says “Why not Gohan? Certainly you realize your son has the most latent ability of all the fighters we know.” To which Goku agrees with, however, he also states that Gohan’s retirement made him rusty making him unfit for the tournament so they opt to bring Piccolo instead. Remember, they made this statement _after_ training with Whis and learning to use God Ki. Their potential should’ve sky rocketed since then and yet they believe his potential still surpasses their own. I will admit it doesn’t make a little sense that he still thinks Goku is still stronger than himself but at the same time Carthu did point out that Gohan puts Goku on a pedestal. It’s to the point where even though Gohan gets to sense Goku’s power he still thinks his dad is holding back. We can argue whether or not he trained as hard, if not harder, than Goku but it doesn’t change the fact that he was just that far ahead but genuinely thought so highly of Goku that Gohan believed he was weaker.

Likewise, the battle with Goku Vs Cell didnt impress gohan at all, implying that he was sure Goku and Cell were toying around despite Goku going ALL OUT. You mean barely. The manga clearly just mentioned that in the video lol. Cell started fighting Gohan at the level he was equal with goku. Once realizing Gohan was faster than Goku's level. He increased his speed to the same level he did. When he started gaining the advantage over goku. Gohan was overwhelmed in a similar fashion to goku. If fpssj goku = 21.5, fpssj gohan = 22.5. cell using increased speed, probably a 25. Full power cell = 30. Keep in mind, ss2 is only a 2x's multiplier. Ss2 gohan = 45. Spc = 42 to 45

In the Anime they make that even more clear by having King Kai say Gohan when he _initially_ powered up was stronger than Goku. Even with the skill/experience gap Gohan would definitely whoop Goku. Hell, even if Goku ate a Senzu Bean after Cell's fight I still think Gohan wins.

Hence why cell easily beat down fpssj gohan. Initially cell battled fpssj gohan at the level he was even in speed/power with goku. Cell then increased his speed. Which tired goku out. Cell needed it to catch the quicker than goku, gohan. That's the only evidence gohan > goku. If goku is a 21.5, gohan is 22.5. In all, goku would win.

Man, I love the idea, it would probably have a great effect if you take in consideration Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, superhumans that are martial artists( Who could become masters and teach peoole like in Dragon Ball Online and Tien in SUPER) or even Goku as the winner of the tournament and student of Roshi ( Big name in martial arts). And knowing the love for hercule and even obsession with him, I'm sure it would change a lot, specially if Goku makes money by winning tournaments, Chichi would not be so problematic with Gohan and in fact she would probably make him train so he can keep winning tournaments after his father "retires", and keep the money and fame Goku would have in the place of Hercule. You had a great idea man, congratulations, I hope he sees this or even another what-if youtuber, I really want to see one like this.

Gohan's power lvl was too much out of Goku's range for technique to matter. The same Speed Cell used against Goku was too slow to touch Gohan who was reluctant to fight. If Gohan fights to win he'd probably mid diff Goku.

I mean, the end of the video literally debunked why experience & technique wouldn't matter in this particular fight. Goku and Gohan just got done training together for nearly a year straight 1 on 1 every day for entire days outside of eating & sleeping. Gohan knows everything Goku can do at this point in the series. If there is any matchup where power matters most at this point, it is Goku vs Gohan.

@@vulgrim909 that was a nerfed Cell to the point he was Goku's equal. Cell was only at about 50% of his power. Gohan was as strong as Cell at around 75%. Gohan was decently stronger than Goku but lacks experience as a martial artist. Instant Kamehameha lost it's surprise factor so Gohan would expect it and counter with his own. Cell immediately powered up again to fight Gohan after he did with Goku.

I’d actually love for it to be if Yamcha won by using the Spirit Ball and carrying Vegeta off the ring with it. Kinda fits with Vegeta’s whole thing in Z about people chipping away at his entitlement and taking the piss out of him when his arrogance gets overbearing, especially when Yamcha’s the weakest of the Z fighters there, it’d really break his ego. Best part is, it could realistically happen, Yamcha’s a trickster in battle and he knows how to beat a sensitive opponent like Vegeta via endless taunting. Of course in a non-tournament setting Yamcha would get blitzed, but in a tournament where you can alternatively win by knocking people off the stage Yamcha’s gonna take that chance and run with it.

Something the fandom likes to forget. Super Saiyan 2 is _only a x2 boost over Super Saiyan Grade 4_ and Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, with one of his arms down and his power halved by the combination of physical damage and self doubt *was almost perfectly matched in a beam struggle with Super Perfect Cell,* only slowly losing ground. Cell Games Gohan is a beast.

Cell was absolutely destroying gohan for most of that beam struggle until Vegeta distracted him. Also losing an arm doesn't correlate to half power. He could have just channeled all of his ki into one arm rather than splitting it across 2.

Isn't the Piccolo vs Android 17 fight you describe the one we already got? I'm with you on Ultimate Gohan vs SSIkari Trunks, sounds like it could be an incredible match. Gohan has the edge in power, but Trunks is by far the most pragmatic fighter in this show who will do everything to win if he's given the motivation somehow. Ultimate Gohan vs Golden Frieza would also be a great fight, but it's a little less interesting. These two hate each other lol

i think if you want interesting match, you have to put: 1.Vegeta vs Trunks -> Vegeta 2.Cell vs Satan ->Cell 3.16 vs picolo ->16 4.gohan vs goku ->gohan second round doesn't matter since power lvl are too far away so you get gohan vs Cell in the final

I think Piccolo would beat 16 as he was able to take hits from Cell Jrs and keep standing while 16 was one shoted by Semi Perfect Cell who was much weaker than them.

@@DynastyZwarrior90 my reasoning for 16 winning is simply because picolo was weaker than base cell while 16 was stronger and i think it's more revelent than the how hard they get beaten by different form of cell that are hard to scale edit: also, the cell jr. powerscale is not coherent, we know at this point Vegeta is considerably stronger than Picolo, Picolo wouldn't stand against vegeta the way he standed against cell jr. which make no sense since the cell jr. are stronger than vegeta, the only explanation is that the cell jr. were playing with them, just like cell was playing with Goku, so they ajusted their power to get a good entertainement

@@gizel4376 Yes but Piccolo trained for one year following his defeat by Cell and judging from everyone's comment his increase was very big. Playing around or not the Cell Jrs were still able to gain the upper hand against Vegeta and Trunks who wat this point could one shot Semi Perfect Cell. I think Piccolo is at the very least stronger than Semi Perfect Cell's level at that point. I mean Super Vegeta (who trashed Semi Cell) was 3 shoted by a heavily supressed Perfect Cell. Vegeta trined for one year and surpassed that level his saw from Perfect Cell (he was confident in winning the Cell Games) and he held his own against the Cell Jrs. Piccolo was able to survive longer against that same Cell Jrs than Vegeta did against Perfect Cell 10 days ago.

You should do a what if on what if goku fully focused on himself in the time chamber instead of gohan. It would be very interesting to see how strong goku would’ve been able to become if he could spent his entire time on trying to improve himself and not gohan. And in this aspect I do believe that if goku have does not have gohan to worry about he could’ve unlocked ssj2 and beat cell.

If Goku had not focused on Gohan, Cell would've easily won. If you have a capable training partner you're going to make much more progress than doing it on your own. Sure, Goku had to spent the first half preparing Gohan, but once Gohan attained Super Sayian, Gokus powr would've increased significantly faster than on his own.

I personally would've loved the story going this route almost, sort of Gohan's final test before taking on the big bad, can he defeat his own father? Despite what the fanbase thinks of their relationship, Gohan has put his dad on this pedestal that he thinks he could never surpass. Goku's challenge would be trying to break that idea Gohan has. With that said, I think Goku would hold back somewhat in fear of killing Gohan and thus Gohan wins. Plus of course Gohan being the stronger of the 2. That might also change the fight of Gohan vs Cell, with Gohan having more confidence to handle the bugman.

Goku is a better fighter than gohan, and at this point in the story gohan is still insecure about his power (which gets even worse considering hes fighting his dad), gohan might be more powerful, but he doesn't have the skill nor the mindset to win a fight against his dad.

I personally think that Goku would win, because his arsenal of techniques is far greater than Gohan. Not only that but IF Goku would to train his SSJ to TRULY be like his base form then surely, I mean surely, he can use the Kaioken. All he needs in my opinion is to use Kaioken x 1.5. (x 2 if there is no decimals in the Kaioken)Not only THAT but Goku's Battle IQ outmatches Gohan's (However I will admit Gohan does have a better IQ than Goku) also Gohan don't like fighting so he will either A. Try to end it fast, or B. Just like his Father win. Last and not least, Gohan barely if at all got battle experience. (All his deadly fights up to now has been a Curb stomp for either him or his opponent.) Forgot to mention this but yeah Gohan and Goku trained for like months (Not a year, some of it was spent trying to get Gohan SSJ) so both of them would know each other fighting styles quite well. (Which is an advantage to both but to mainly Goku, because he can easily detect the weakness for Gohan's better than Gohan can for Goku's)

Kaioken is incompatible with Super Saiyan. Also 1.5 doesn't exist and would still leave Goku woefully underpowered here. Imo SSKx3 would probably be enough, but it's not a thing

@@priestesslucy3299 That’s never stated in the manga, and Grade 4 doesn’t consume any extra stamina. I doubt Goku would use it since he never does so, but there really isn’t a reason he can’t.

I always assumed goku was "weaker" was because he doesn't have the potental endurance of cell. If goku went all out right from the start, caught cell off guard and blew him tf up maybe. But cell heals, and his stamina will quickly come back, goku obviously doesn't. Also since cell heals mid fight, he's getting mini zenkis constantly.

I think Gohan could, but wouldn't. Unless Goku intentionally loses and further confuses Gohan towards the end, the younger would be weighed by a lack of *confidence* alongside experience. He respects his father, and consistently expects him to have more in the tank.

Yeah that's my thing. Goku was still able to give cell a good fight in ssj Gohan did not cause he doesn't like fighting. Even if Gohan had more power than Goku which ehh I'm still on the fence about that since they're at the absolute max ssj can go already. If it is I don't think it's by as much as people say I still say Goku would win based on drive and technique. Had Gohan had the same drive and moviation Goku had then yeah Gohan would probably win. Gohan didn't really fight that much until he went ssj 2 so it's kind of hard to say what fighting technique he really has.
